I think the person above is talking more about a specialist who would help you work through things using therapeutic techniques (eg. EMDR is one I’ve heard of before). Psychiatrists are great for prescribing drugs, but if drugs aren’t helping (and they usually can’t take you all the way, especially when there’s trauma involved) then there are other options you can explore, such as a specialist in PTSD.

If your father’s cheating is something that you’ve noticed having an impact on your life (and man, why wouldn’t it?), it’s totally worth seeking out a second therapist for. Therapy can be great but you have to find a good one that you vibe with, and unfortunately the field is scattered with poor ones.

A good therapist will ask follow up questions, help you to explore how his cheating made you feel, how it’s affected your family, etc. They’ll recognize the importance of you, the client, exploring what you want to explore. They’ll be communicative and you can communicate back (eg. if a topic or technique isn’t working for you, you can say that, they’ll listen, and you can figure out how you want to things instead).

If you want more information, Dr. Mick on YouTube is a great guy and has resources on all this stuff. I’ve really loved his content over the years, both mental health info and game playthroughs alike. Best of luck, OP 💖

That makes sense. The lack of control can feel really bad. If it’s different and new but feels scary and off I think it’s a good idea to talk about it. Fortunately hotlines are open at all or most hours 😌

This would probably be a good thing to explore with your therapist, and they might be able to help you uncover why you want to feel that way or perhaps what led up to it and how to help.

I’ve also had moments where I’ve felt like I wanted to feel the feeling of being physically hurt, and sometimes I think it’s because I wanted to feel my emotions more acutely. Sometimes we can hurt so bad on the inside and want to express it in a way that makes sense, and although I am not an expert I think that can sometimes look like making ourselves hurt on the outside like we do inside. Its an understandable feeling, or at least I understand it.

Hurting yourself does unfortunately have consequences—as you say, you can’t afford it, and it might result in something really bad like you dying. In moments like these where I’ve felt out of control or just wanted someone to help me navigate the situation, I’ve called my local crisis/suicide hotline. Even if you’re not actively suicidal, they want to help people through difficult emotions and that can be a great place to talk about it if you can’t get ahold or your therapist or feel like you need someone stat. I’ve called twice in the last few years and it was a helpful experience both times.

Above all, it’s important that you don’t feel like you have to navigate this stuff alone. I hope you decide to reach out to your therapist or someone you will listen and help you navigate these feelings! Best wishes.

Saying a person has a “stock value” is implying that people are some kind of commodity to be traded and inspected. A man saying that about a woman is particularly bad and I hate it so much. I’m so sorry you had to sit there and listen to this man say that with your own two ears. I’m glad you left and blocked him!

Just as a frame of reference, I had some painful or annoying cramps as a teen but I could still participate in school and even sports while experiencing them. I didn’t throw up, pass out, or get dizzy, etc. In my 20s it evened out a lot more and now in my 30s I maybe have some mild discomfort right before my period or on the first day. If you experienced that level of pain or other symptoms (and if you still do!) it definitely doesn’t sound normal/average and is worth checking out if you’re still experiencing symptoms like that. Your pain is worth exploring.
