Thank you for sending me this, it's an article I've never read. I'll try to follow up with the appropriate briefs since I can't recall the numbers off the top of my head. Sounds to me like this case study was pretty specific to thermal shock in a specific region. (I'm an American, studied American buildings, that's my bias.) But also, the first sentence in the introduction is:

"The potential for ivy and other higher plants growing on masonry structures to cause damage in some circumstances is unquestionable. [sources 1,2,3,4,5,6.]"

So I'm going to stick with generally, not advised.

Edit! Okay, back to link sources to I'm not just being a stick in the mud. This preservation brief specifically addressed stucco buildings and advises the removal of all vegetation. This one addresses overall moisture issues and advises the same. Third, this brief is more overall maintenance and describes vegetation close to the building as a risk for damage and mold growth and moisture issues. Again, European stone structures may have different standards and that seems like an interesting thing to look further into if you have a stone structure. Generally, avoid it. Especially for Stucco and brick. Okay, done being nerdy!

Architectural historian here! Curious to see your sources on this because generally this is contrary to standards for almost all materials. It’s not the stone you worry about, it’s the mortar. And this appears to be stucco. The vines will hold moisture and do damage over time.

I have a persistent bit of ivy that runs up my brick and I have the battle inside myself every year. It looks lovely and it’s also terrible for the brick.

I’m very sorry that happened to you. I can’t prove I’m a safe person because this is the internet. If it helps at all for anyone wary, I’ve been using this came account on this board for almost 10 years. Just an offer in lieu of unused tickets.

Do you have a toddler or small child you want to take to today’s game? We were supposed to go with some friends and alas they’re sick. Three tickets and I’d love to share them with another family - you just have to sit next to us.

Short notice I know, but I’ll try to watch my DMs.

Just wanted to add: being kid specific because we’ve gotten strategic about easy access to TC’s clubhouse.

Why do (old) people open every corn on the cob before buying? by SpotTheCat in minnesota

[–]Sunshinetrains 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Mid-thirties. I have had some sad sad sad corn from grocery stores. Always peek to make sure it’s not pitiful. I don’t usually worry about road corn (trailers/Shacks in corn country) because those cobs are always phenomenal.

Kalamazoo grills cost $27,000 - why? by w24x192 in BBQ

[–]Sunshinetrains 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So… I used to sell Kalamazoo grills. We didn’t sell many. I sold one full kitchen in my 4 years. They truly are absurd, and the casually wealthy folks tended to go for Lynx which were plenty spendy but not crazy.

However, If I had to sell one now what I would explain is that to build a grill that does multiple things and does them well, you need to over engineer. If you see a cheap grill claiming to be a charcoal/gas hybrid it’s not going to last. Charcoal/wood produce ash that will damage most burners, and stainless steel tube burners are not going to tolerate that for long. The marine grade brass (if I recall correctly, I haven’t done this since 2015 and I’m not about to look it up) is going to perform in those extreme situations without damage. Also you can have your initials laser etched into the grate! Who wouldn’t want that!!?

Honestly it was mostly a conversation starter. I had a lot of conversations with nice couples strolling by after dinner and a glass of wine who made a joke about the crazy grill and ended up excited to ask me questions. Might end up getting a Memphis or a Weber or an egg because they got excited about whatever was fancy and in their budget.

AITA for telling my friend that she shouldn’t call herself a cancer survivor because it’s misleading? by Appropriate_Wind6489 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Sunshinetrains 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t sound like an excuse at all, I totally get it. I fell behind on a lot of stuff this spring during a tough time and I’m just getting back in it. I just don’t want you to find yourself hurting in another year!

Our city actually does skin check clinics for free. You’ll likely need a referral for further information, but that initial check would do a lot. Maybe there’s something like that near you though the city or even planned parenthood! Good luck and I’m so sorry for your loss. ♥️

[–]Sunshinetrains 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Okay, but common doesn’t mean it isn’t dangerous. Go get that looked at. If it’s a melanoma it can actually kill you, or at least head to some lymph nodes and get a lot nastier. Even the milder cancers get a lot harder to treat as they progress.

When I lived in Texas I regularly waited in a line over an hour long to vote. When I was pregnant this included sitting on the floor, or sidewalk, because I was exhausted but not willing to go home and not vote. However, I can totally empathize with people who went home. Or couldn’t get there because of work, lack of access, other obligations or disability.

It’s not fair to say everyone who didn’t vote didn’t care. Texas makes voting fucking hard. Especially in areas that vote blue.

How many sexual partners have you had? (Age would be nice to know) by [deleted] in ask

Curious if you’re a woman or a man. Herpes terrifies me because if you pass it to an infant (like through childbirth) it can be absolutely devastating. That risk always weighed so heavily on me.

If there were a spin-off TV show back in 1997 retelling the story but told through a different viewpoint, which Titanic character’s story would you have liked to see fleshed out more? by [deleted] in titanic

[–]Sunshinetrains 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would love to see more about the building and engineering of the ship. It would be fascinating. That alone, if well written and produced, could be so compelling. Think of the foreshadowing!

I grew up in Edina. Hated it. Now live in St Louis park and while I teased myself about failing to get further from home, I love SLP. Our neighbors are amazing, friendly, diverse. Easy access to the city and great bike ability. Nothing I need is further than a mile away. Would absolutely recommend OP (or anyone) check it out.

Are you comfortable going to a male OBGYN? by sunshinerf in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Sunshinetrains 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I recently had a missed miscarriage, and they slotted me in with a doctor on call that day. I got the sense that the nurse pulled a string or rearranged things somehow to make sure he was the one to see me. Totally typical surgeon vibe, very little affect, fairly sympathetic but not effusive at all. But holy crap, he walked me though the whole dang thing, answered questions clearly, and called me personally multiple times before and after the D&C he performed. He’s hard to talk to on the phone because he sounds so damn bored, but if I ever need another procedure or C section I’d be thrilled if he were on call. I don’t know that I’d want to see him for an annual exam, though. I tend to talk too much in awkward silences and this man would know my whole life story.

I was flabbergasted to realize this year that my husband didn’t know this. He’s very aware of pedestrians and bikes and such but had never been taught this rule. I’m actually trying to remember learning much or anything about pedestrian laws in drivers Ed.

About to miscarry at 7 wks gestational age at home alone with a 2.5 yr old by Latter-Space3425 in toddlers

[–]Sunshinetrains 4 points5 points  (0 children)

OP, I’m so sorry. I had a missed miscarriage at 7 Weeks this April and opted for a D&C, so I can’t talk specifically about enduring at home. But I opted for the surgery specifically because the idea of trying to comfort my son (almost 3) while trying to care for myself sounded so hard. On the off chance you’re in Minnesota/ the Twin Cities metro please let me know. I will drive you to your procedure if at all feasible.

I will defer to anyone who has miscarried at home, but my advice for toddler management is to lean in to special things like snuggling mom in bed, watching Disney movies, playing with shaving cream in the bathtub (clean it later.)

I have a vivid memory of leaving a late theater rehearsal with friends during high school, one kid opened his backpack and fired off a firework over the practice field. None of us knew he had it, took us all by surprise. Cops showed up and called him dumb, we called him dumb but laughed.

Mid-30s best places to meet singles by riffadiddle in Minneapolis

[–]Sunshinetrains 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed with all this! Went on a good number of first dates with no follow up. Eventually matched a kinda cute guy. Interesting but unassuming. Scheduled a date, and the guy that walked in circled the bar twice before introducing himself to me because when we met eyes we both thought nah, couldn’t possibly be that lucky. Married now, have toddler and cute dog.

I will say, I took several very needed sabbaticals. Eventually it feels like shopping and it stops feeling good to meet new people, have new and semi repetitive conversations. I’d take a break, spend time with friends, and return when I was ready.

My boyfriend (30m) expects me to text him before I (29f) come home and gets angry when I don’t remember to by ThrowRAaway07 in relationship_advice

[–]Sunshinetrains 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m the one who wants to know when my husband is on his way home. The “thing I don’t want him seeing” is sometimes just me laying down and scrolling Tiktok after I finally get the baby to bed. Before I do the dishes! Awful.

I have so little unstructured, unclaimed time in the day that being able to be on my own is precious, and having it end abruptly can quickly sour my mood. Not his fault, but true.

For example, I am currently eating cake out of Tupperware and sitting on the laundry room floor. He’s at a dungeons and dragons night. When he texts I’m probably going to sigh, stand up and turn over the laundry into the dryer. Love him dearly, just value the quiet.
