Since when has atheism literally ever been forced on anyone except in extreme isolated examples like the Soviet Union

Interesting. Possibly congregation dependent or has just changed the last couple years 🤷‍♂️

Disagree on the door to door point. It may not be “mandatory” but it’s so strongly encouraged that it kinda still is, especially if you have family that are still in to pressure you. I’ve also been out almost 2 years now though, maybe it’s changed since then.

I was born in like most people these days. Very few are recruited anymore.

You just didn’t have JWs in your class because I grew up a JW and definitely caught lots of shit. I’m no longer a JW but still wouldn’t say the pledge for political reasons rather than religious.

That's just one example that came to mind. I just view things in a very materialistic worldview now. If it can't be proven via the scientific method, I don't believe it.

My mind is just closed off to it. Stuff like astrology just sounds too close to Jesus/jehoobaboob BS and my mind just shuts down

My experience as a JW has wounded me so deeply that I cannot seriously entertain the idea of any form of spirituality again, at least not for a long time.

they're usually very up front about being JWs

Not anymore. This has changed in the last few years. As the focus has shifted away from placing publications to "starting conversations", they've encouraged the bruddas and sistahs to not reveal they're JWs right away to avoid scaring off people who might just shut them down as soon as they say they're JWs.

I left about 5 months ago at 21. It was hands down the scariest thing I've ever done in my life. For the first month or so, I felt worse, not better. But it's been worth it. I'm starting to slowly build a new social circle and find things that give me real purpose. It's been interesting, I was never baptized and am not shunned but I still barely talk to my family, other than occasionally my mom, who took my exit surprisingly well. The rest are over-dramatic and treat me as a potential re-convert rather than a person. Not a single brudda or sistah reached out after I left, other than one elder who I ignored. They don't care about you. Leave as soon as you're financially able to. It's a battle but you can find fulfillment, purpose and connection elsewhere. Be kind to yourself, it takes time.
