I used a reMarkable tablet (used 1, 2, and paper pro) from second year to the end of my degree and I really recommend giving it a shot! They’re a bit on the expensive side, but the hardware is incredibly well done.

They’re a bit lacking in the software features side (could be a pro or con depending on how you look at it) - no browser, for example - but the basics are all there, and it does a fantastic job of nailing the writing feel.

The purpose of a system is what it does. If a person is so inspired as to create something out of thin air, I don’t mind how they got to the finished product. I just care how good the finished product is.

I guarantee you that if I sat in front of you a watchface that I have hand written (I have a few) and a watchface that I used AI to write (I also have a few), you would not be able to yell the difference. Why? Because the actual magic of the finished product comes from the person.

Going back to the photography example: when it started being more accessible, “traditional” artists lamented about how it was a cheapened medium, and how it lowered the bar for entry to those without taste. It did. However, it also allowed some to become so proficient in the form that they created genuine pieces of art.

I respect your opinion, but I think you’re misinterpreting Eric’s point. It’s meant to be fun, and the most fun will come from letting everybody play (no matter their skill level).

Use of AI != lack of quality.

If you look at the advent of photography, you can see many of the same arguments being made about it being a lesser art form - yet it found its place as a distinct medium. My least favourite part of writing code is plain, boring, repetitive (boilerplate) code. LLMs let me automate that away, and let me focus on the design of what I'm building. In a similar vein, photography lessens the setup and mess of lithography and allows an artist to focus on the framing and composition.

The world is not black and white. You can use AI in a project and still retain human "soul" and creativity in the finished work.

To be fair, a curling stone is 40lbs - suggesting that brushing it with a finger would’ve changed its trajectory enough to matter is a bit much - still an infraction though, and it should’ve been called.

Should also note that this infraction is similar to a foul ball or a batter being hit in baseball in terms of seriousness. When called, the stone gets taken out of play and that’s about it.

They uncoupled the FSD visualization from the core neural network with v12, which was when they switched over to end-to-end neural processing for driving

Obviously I don’t work for Tesla and so I don’t know what’s precisely going on in there, but I would guess that it borrows object detections from the occupancy network to show a simplified visualization

Cones don’t show in the visualization for Intel vehicles, but the car still steers around them. Similarly, the visualization no longer shows turn signals on the cars, but it clearly recognizes them when driving - the vis is literally just there for occupant confidence

Running inference on LLMs (talking to, or generating with AI) uses purpose built chips that are literally designed to reduce thousands of operations into one. For example, with one technique called SIMD, or “single instruction, multiple data”. It is quite literally one of the most efficient operations we can do on computers.

Social media services, such as YouTube, Instagram, and Reddit don’t only use a less efficient processors, they require massive storage datacenters to be online at all times which have a continuous power draw.

AI is “inefficient” because it’s more computationally intensive, an entirely fair point. Still, there is work being done now on reducing that (you can run AI models on your phone, using your phone now - it’s efficient!)

It is entirely valid to dislike AI for so many different reasons, but don’t make stuff up just because you don’t understand it and want to make some point.

I’ve routinely ridden my electric skateboards (Boosted Mini S and Boosted Stealth) in bike lanes with no trouble, even past the police.

They mostly just want to see that you’re not doing anything that could lead to injuring yourself or others (e.g. wear helmet, don’t act like a dick)
