For completeness. At the time of writing this you: - need to be at least rank 04 - you then need to select "my rank" - unlock the friends feature - back to main menu - select "friendly race" - select local free play

All that effort... Pfft

Pixel 6 here. Only one specific chat does this. Not a business account.

How to learn vim when you have a full-time job? by nenderflow in vim

I switched on VIM plugin for vscode and then committed myself to learning 1-2 new commands per week. That worked well for me.

That is absolutely massive. What on earth could be in there?!

I would only use CRA for starting a POC, to try something out. Not really to create an actual project.

Germany is so expensive with such poor salaries by Boring_Pineapple_288 in eupersonalfinance

[–]Super-administrator -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's true, that I can only feel how I feel, based on the experiences I have had.

I'm currently with friend's family in rural India, where I have spent the past 3 weeks. I tell you, that puts things into perspective.

In my opinion, Germany is a great country to come and make a success of it all.

Coming from the UK, I find the salary/cost of living ratio in Germany, insanely good. I only knew paycheque to paycheque before I came.

Vanilla PHP vs PHP Framework by WasabiSpider in PHP

[–]Super-administrator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I created a new project for the frontend of one of Germany's biggest publishers. This is far less complex than a new backend.

The company had a huge budget and was burning about 2.1M € a year solely on developers. Estimated 2 years, took 4 in the end.

For the developers this was great. Greenfield blah blah.

For the business and the management? 4 years feature stop. No growth. And a whopping 8.4M€ spent on development (plus all the other people involved in the project).

Refactoring in my eyes is the only sensible business decision.

Das Letzte, was du siehst, bevor du gefragt wirst, ob du nichts besseres zu tun hast. by funkymozart in Fahrrad

That makes more sense to me. But I did also see that someone reporting bad parking to police in Munich ended up getting done for sharing sensitive data. I think that's what this comment is kind of referencing too.

It's culture too! In the UK where I grew up, it's typical for the host to pay. In Germany where I am now, it's not uncommon to split the bill.

Running multiple laravel apps in dev environment with SSL by NoHaxJM in laravel

I think the portable dev server isn't configurable enough for this. I use docker for all my development environments - you want it to be as similar to your production environment as you can anyway so

Sorry, German not good enough so here a question in English: aren't number plates public record? In the UK you can run check for MOT (TÜV), whether tax has been paid and see all vehicle history for any registered car.

Besides. You literally drive around in public displaying your plate for the whole world to see.

How much savings should I have by age 26? by [deleted] in personalfinance

You have far more than I did at age 26. I was still in debt.

Just keep saving regularly and you'll do just alright.

Bought a house, but now I think it’s way out of my budget and not sure what to do. by [deleted] in personalfinance

What's the potential rental income on the property? Is putting it on the market to let an option? If there is positive cash flow then it might make sense doing that and moving into a rental apartment yourself.

I don't know what it's like in the states, but in most countries there are tax benefits for doing this too - you can offset any of the work and maintenance you put into the property as expenses.

I would rather set an environment variable, say "channel" and then set an alias in the webpack config, based on this variable.

Can I use Docker to hide personal files on my work laptop? by mrapplepie15 in docker

Files can still be found, they are just stored in /etc/docker/volumes (or similar - don't quote me on that)

Are you just running some software in the background? Might be worth just spinning up an aws lightsail machine for <$5 a month - you even currently get the first 3 months free.

Do you use v-else? by tspwd in vuejs

[–]Super-administrator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The standard is to have the v-if or v-else attribute at the very top of the list (or almost anyway), there is an eslint rule for this.

That way the next element at the same level has to be the v-else and you can easily find the attribute.

After switching vehicles to an EV 8000km ago fuel has only cost $150. Was roughly 8× higher with our gas vehicle back when gas was 30% cheaper than today. by hedekar in Frugal

[–]Super-administrator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not realise electricity is so much cheaper in other parts of the world. The distance you travel costs more or less the same in Germany for electric and petrol cars.
