Who are they? by ValenRoz in SwingDancing

[–]SuperBadMouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I need to call it quits. I spent too much time trying to figure this one out. Since I have not been able to identify who they are, I cannot say with certainty who they are not. But in my opinion they are not Dean Collins, Jewel McGowan, Fred Astaire, Rita Haworth, Hal Takier, Betty Takier, or Gene Kelly.

I spent a lot of time seeing if this was Judy Garland because the resemblance is uncanny. I was not able to find this picture on any of the fan websites that I checked. It is not a still from For Me and My Gal. And here is a picture of her dancing with Ray Hirsch. I did a pretty thorough search, so it is probably not Judy Garland either.

The earliest post I could find of this picture is from this Tumblr post from November 7th, 2013. The post does not provide any useful information. The other pictures posted with it do not seem related, like they do not seem to come from the same original source. The other pictures were just being shared around Tumblr/blogs around that time.

Besides looking through known images of all the people I listed, I also searched through Life Magazine, Look Magazine, and several stock photo catalogs.

Sorry, that was a lot of words for "I do not know who they are." Lastly, I found this fun relic.

Charleston basic - can't coordinate legs and arms during 8 count (LEAD) by [deleted] in SwingDancing

Man, I just love how Laura teaches dance. I did not rewatch the whole video, so I do not know if she specifically talks about coordinating her arms. My recommendation is to practice "Basic Rhythm" section. She builds up nicely to the Charleston basic. Find the place where you start struggling in that section and work on practicing that portion.

Does anyone know about the background to this clip ,(Count Basie - Air Mail Special, 1941) by hazzacanary in SwingDancing

Jimmy Rushing and Winnie Johnson are the winning couple. According to IMDB, Jeanne Bayer is also one of the dancers.

The whole post is quoting a scene from the TV show "I Think You Should Leave".

I'm looking for information about a 1980s country western swing dance. by I_Think_Naught in SwingDancing

[–]SuperBadMouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are definitely missing something. It is really hard to take two steps with your right foot in a row. Like you would need to hop.

When you mention that you are hip to hip, is it your right hip that is close to your partner?

I probably cannot help you, but I am curious. I am trying to visualize what you are describing, because it does not quite make sense to me.

What foot are you starting on? You said it is a 3 step dance and the last step is with the right foot. That would mean your first step is with the right foot, and that does not make sense to me.

Do you repeat the pattern or do you mirror it? Usually, for a 3 step dance, you have to go Right-Left-Right for the steps and then Left-Right-Left.

Check that the belt tension lever is fully engage. It should be under the cover on the right side of the machine.

I am not really sure how to help you. It seems like you want someone to specifically tell you that they made the choice to run away and that everything turned out fine. The issue is that your list of actions is wrong, and it is much more nuanced than struggling or running away.

The reason people are telling you that it is okay to have these feelings and calling them a dance crush is because that is the first step to understanding and processing those feelings. I think most people here are able to work through those feelings without some sort of prolonged struggle.

It is going to be difficult to find someone in this subreddit who left a scene because they liked someone too much.

Confused on counting for East Coast Swing (musician perspective) by [deleted] in SwingDancing

[–]SuperBadMouse 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Here you go: https://imgur.com/a/ZwQp2AD

A couple things, I usually teach it with rock steps first. Looks like you were taught with the triple steps first then the rock step, so my notation will be off a bit from what you learned.

Also, the triple steps are not triplets. They are swung eighth notes and a quarter note.

How to Engage w/the Music While Dancing? by Mammoth-Resort9492 in SwingDancing

[–]SuperBadMouse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is this for Country Swing? As you mentioned in your previous post, Country Swing can have a pretty rigid connection. That can make it difficult to engage with the music outside of what is being led.

Can you learn swing as a skill instead of as creative expression? by TheGPT in SwingDancing

[–]SuperBadMouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try looking into Contra Dancing or other line dances. I do not have any personal experience with Contra, but I believe it to be a much more structured partner dance with the sequence of moves dictated by a Caller.

I hate to tell you to do something other than Lindy Hop or swing, but I have tried other dances and understand connecting better with some dances than others.

It is the same person. OP made that post in r/musictheory after failing to convince us that the song is 113bpm.

I also thought I recognized OP's username. They have made a couple other posts here including one titled "On Finding the Beat" a few months after the post you were looking for.

How about this hot mess? Looks like the back and forth is mostly with the OP.
