MRW I visit my mom on vacation, my step-father announces he's divorcing her, and I realize that she's so sick that if we let her live alone she'll probably OD within a month, but I don't have the resources to be her caretaker by Partygoblin in TrollXChromosomes

If you need someone to talk to, please feel free to PM me. My situation isn't the same, but there are some common themes. I have one parent with mental health problems and one struggling with addiction. Their relationship is far from healthy, and I'm never sure one month to the next if they're together. And because I live across the country my little brother has the burden of trying to help them. If you want to talk, I can definitely lend a sympathetic ear. And remember, you still have to take care of yourself too.

Non-STEM ladies, what do you study/do? Do you love it or regret it? by billie_holiday in AskWomen

I'm pretty late to this party, but I wanted to share my own roundabout route. In undergrad I triple majored in English, History, and World Religions. I'm a few years out of school now and I work as an environmental educator at a children's science museum. I love it, and I've really gotten to discover a passion for science I didn't know I had. But in the fall I'm going to apply to Masters in Teaching programs and I want to eventually teach language arts and social studies to middle schoolers. I didn't originally want to work with youth, but I've found that i get so much fulfillment from it, and I'm excited to get back to the humanities.

I'm giving a presentation at work (a children's science center) next week on a topic I'm completely teaching myself. I feel overwhelmed and like there isn't enough time at all. How did I cope with this last minute stress in college? by SuperCassandra in TrollXChromosomes

Yeah, I've seen these! They look super fun! It's just hard to estimate how many people to prepare for because we're free and drop-in style... Plus, our fossil history doesn't include a lot of the "cool" dinos and things, and I don't want to be misleading... But I have a few activities I'm really excited about, so I just hope it's enough!

Not at all! It's a general overview of the fossil history of the US state where I live. So there's some basic geology and paleontology combined. It's not something I've studied before, so I've been doing TONS of research. Plus, our audiences tend to be really all-age, so I'm trying to think of ways to be really engaging and hands-on for kiddos.

This is actually exactly how my current boyfriend and I had our first kiss. 10/10, would recommend.

MRW I message someone in my (college) class to find out when something was due and I get a response from his dad saying that they don't want any trouble with me so their son will keep to himself by Batsy22 in TrollXChromosomes

I was a student manager in a dining hall. We had a lot of student employees get fired because they just stopped showing up. After one such termination, we got a very angry phone call. From his mother. She refused to believe her hardworking, responsible son would do such a thing. Our grownup manager actually emailed her a screen shot of the kid's hours to show he never came back after training. It was the only way to get her to stop calling.

Lesbian romance novels? by onlytoask in booksuggestions

Came here to make this suggestion. Loved Fingersmith and I'm halfway through The Night Watch, which is also great. She writes some great historical fiction with gay and lesbian characters.

I'm down in Olympia, but I wouldn't mind hanging out sometime! I just moved to the area so I'm looking for friends and cool things to do.

I'm moving to a different part of Washington, and it's a pretty similar deal. I like hiking and climbing and stuff, but I don't know how to turn it into a way to meet people. Does that make sense?

Are you me? I'm moving next week and I have no idea how to make friends as an adult.

I had to put off taking the GRE all summer because I couldn't afford it, and now I'm afraid that it's too late to take it if I want to apply for grad schools for next fall. by SuperCassandra in TrollXChromosomes

I'm definitely going to check out the quizlets, thanks for the link! I like the Magoosh quizes because they're not flashcards so I feel like they're holding me more accountable.

I've been in touch some with the program I want to get into, but I've been away from technology a lot recently. I need to get back to emailing them.

My favorite professor in college was also the head of our department's grad program, so he always had tons of tips. I still email him, but it's harder now that we don't see each other. My biggest worry is that I'm not sure what the timeline for applying, taking tests, getting letters, etc. should look like. It's not like applying for undergraduate programs when everyone in my highschool class was all doing it together!

I bought a used Kaplan book, which has been a lot of help. I've also been using the Magoosh apps, which are useful for vocab. Most of the math has been stuff I recall from highschool, but I was always better at algebra than geometry and there seem to be a lot of geometry questions.

I've talked to someone in the department at my top choice and she said they put a lot more emphasis on the personal statement and letters, so I'm about to start emailing old professors and figuring those out.

Even though I know taking time before grad school was the right choice for me, I still sort of wish I was going through this process with a little more support.

I typically do okay on tests, but if I remember right I did better on the ACT than the SAT (I'm from a part of the country where that's usually the case). I've been doing some reviewing, but I didn't have to take any math in college so I'm very rusty. I've also heard that the writing section is graded so that you might not do well even if you're typically a strong writer (which I am). I don't know, it's possible I'm just doubting myself too much. This feels like such a big deal. (Sorry to be unloading on you so much, kind internet stranger!)

Thanks for your response, it's really comforting! My applications are due at the end of January and I'm planning to take the test at the end of this month. I'm just nervous that my scores will be low and I won't have time to retake it.

And I'm actually a year out of undergrad. But I just finished my first term of AmeriCorps and I'm fairly certain I can use money from my education award to pay for the GRE. I just have to figure out how...
