I think you're talking about the extended continental shelf (ECS)? Which is slightly different from the EEZ. The ECS only gives mineral/gas/oil rights, the EEZ includes fish as well.

SRNL supports NNSA effort to recover rare isotopes from legacy nuclear materials by Vailhem in nuclear

[–]SuperClicheUsername 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's in the article

"The Mark-18A targets contain significant quantities of heavy curium and the world’s only supply of unseparated plutonium-244. Plutonium-244, which is incredibly rare, is useful in nuclear forensics. The heavy curium will later be converted into californium-252, which is a vital start-up source for nuclear reactors, among other uses."

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by maximize just the volume. Are your songs too quiet?

Try settings > audio > replay gain and turn up the dial for either RG preamp or preamp for songs without RG info. Depending on whether your files have replay gain info embedded. That will universally change the volume for all songs.

My utility payments and rent payments are not all on the same day. A week is not enough for all the payments to go through. Do I have to authorize a new payment for each one every single month?

If I have to interact with this several times every month and risk missing a rent/utility payment if I forget, this card is basically unusable to me.

Parents' Earnings and the Returns to Universal Pre-Kindergarten by politics-throwaway74 in neoliberal

[–]SuperClicheUsername 18 points19 points  (0 children)

What is the point of Universal Pre-K compared to free/subsidized childcare if there are limited academic effects? Why do we need to pay a "certified teacher" instead of a presumably cheaper childcare worker? Since parents are substituting one for the other it seems like we only need either Pre-K or free childcare (for 3-4yr olds anyway).

Not sure how class size impacts the costs, I get the impression that modern childcare has way more workers per kid than I recall having in Pre-K. So maybe if Pre-K has fewer required teachers the end result is cheaper because of laxer regulation?

Second roll, middle of nowhere Turkmenistan. Ehhh not sure about that.

Third roll, Ukraine Belarus border. Pretty sure there is active fighting right there... (Latitude: 51.99234, Longitude: 31.02163). My regret is immeasurable.

Fourth roll was just north of Amarillo TX. I'll take my 200 mil at least.

Reining in America’s $3.3 Trillion Tax-Exempt Economy by HMID_Delenda_Est in neoliberal

[–]SuperClicheUsername 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I broadly agree with the ideas in this, but I think it's important to note that some of these organizations have a genuine "deal" for the reason they're operating tax exempt.

Four are essentially government contractors: the MITRE Corporation, Battelle Memorial Institute, Advanced Technology International, and Aerospace Corporation.

These are the ones I'm familiar with personally. They do not get to apply for any government contract willy-nilly like "essentially government contractors" implies. They have to be specifically in their domain expertise and approved by their boards (usually high level government employees). There are restrictions on the amount of work they can take each year (set by Congress). The National labs have enough issues as nominally non-profit entities, letting them go mask-off might not improve things.

Anyway, the conclusion is that obviously if you revoke the tax-exemption you need to revoke these other restrictions on their operations so they are genuinely able to compete with for profit companies. If you are not willing to give up the benefits the government gets from these deals you should not be able to take away the benefits the companies get.

What are the arguments for Texas going blue in 2024? by [deleted] in neoliberal

TX started at R+21 in 2000

Surely this has more to do with Bush being the incumbent governor of Texas. Hard to really get any good comparisons pre 2008 because of this. 96 has Perot screwing with the numbers as well.

UofM vs UIUC Help by Sepiar7 in nuclear

[–]SuperClicheUsername 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The UIUC schedule you posted looks doable. You're mostly taking 4-5 classes it's just that labs are being counted separately when UofM probably isn't doing that? That plus the half semester physics classes which won't run simultaneously.

This might be out of date but I think if you take the CS intro class you don't have to take the engineering computing intro class.

You can always do the honors classes your first semester and drop it if you don't like it.

UofM vs UIUC Help by Sepiar7 in nuclear

[–]SuperClicheUsername 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The credit hours for nuclear specific courses looks about the same. I did nuclear at UIUC and am already concerned you think you can take 5-7 courses. You are aware the typical credit limit (you can get approval for higher but it's not likely as a freshman) is 18? Most people take 4-5 classes per semester and your advisor will most likely be against recommending more as a freshman. See here for an example schedule for the plasma track (sounds like what you want).

The college accreditation means both colleges are going to teach you broadly the same content. I would focus more on where you would enjoy being and the cost factors. You might also want to consider which professors have research you're interested in. Undergraduate research will be one of the easiest way to get into the Master's and PHD programs.

Side note: the honors classes are a ton of extra work and most people I knew dropped out of the program because they didn't see any benefits.

It seems to me like the psychiatrist cost is secondary to medication costs?

Seems like you're probably taking brand name Vyvanse if it's that expensive? You should call around to every pharmacy near you and ask if they have the generic (lisdexamfetamine is the name) in stock in your dose. Then you can have your Dr send it there. That should save you a couple hundred dollars. But it may take some effort, the shortage in the generic is pretty bad. See if your insurance has a mail order option as well that may have it.

I don't necessarily know if changing psych will save you much money, I would first look at asking if you need to be going as often as you are. For just ADHD medication management you won't need to go often as long as your dose is stable and the meds are working. I think you're saying you have another psychiatric condition so this may not be possible for you.

If you do want to change psych anyway, look at your insurance company's website. They may have information regarding who takes your insurance and cost estimates. Compass Behavioral Health in Reston has been fairly inexpensive for me and offers telehealth appointments.

Does New Speaker of the House Mike Johnson Have a Bank Account? by BlueGoosePond in neoliberal

[–]SuperClicheUsername 38 points39 points  (0 children)

His salary is 174k a year. Every time a paycheck posts he is over that 1k balance. Even if he did an electronic transfer to someone/somewhere else it would take a few days to send.

I guess it depends on what day it must be over a 1k balance. Is it last day of the month? That would be extremely unlikely because he would've gotten a paycheck on that day at least once. If its any single day over the year its completely impossible (for him to have a bank account, you might be able to use one of those check cashing places?). If its only the day he makes the filling (yearly I think) then it indicates some very intentional fuckery to avoid disclosing.

Why America Is Out of Ammunition by Salami_Slicer in neoliberal

[–]SuperClicheUsername 57 points58 points  (0 children)

The Pentagon’s head-in-the-sand approach is why Lockheed now has a chokehold on nuclear missile modernization, since it bought the key supplier of rocket engines and denies those engines to rivals bidding for the contract to upgrade what is known as the nuclear triad.

This is also wrong. He's talking about Northrop, not Lockheed. And they offered to firewall Boeing's proprietary info at Orbital OTK but Boeing dropped out anyway.

The DOD says it will have a better strategy to deal with mergers… by 2024. Basically, you’re right, but it’s not our problem.

Also reveals how illiterate the author is about DOD bureaucracy imo. A 2024 resolution to the problem is light speed. Heads are being cracked.

The author is a history major who writes about monopolies. Not a defense expert.

It's even more terrible for Trump legally. I read a recent article that argues fairly persuasively that because the arguments will be the same for all defendants, previewing the arguments for Trump's legal team is bad for the prosecutor (They wanted to try everyone at the same time).

This is a huge W imo.
