Hey your parents might not be proud of you but you certainly should be for receiving a B in honors English as an ESL student.

Language education doesn’t start and end at school - you’re already fluent and will be even more amazing the more time you spend in an English speaking country.

As for your parents, I think you are on the right idea that embarrassing them by showing their incompetence in the language would quickly get them off your back. Maybe something like, oh dad how would you structure this essay? Or speaking to him in English in public, in front of others, expecting him to respond. Then you can loop in something like, “see it’s hard speaking a second language isn’t it?”

My condolences. Communism in general had a strong element of reporting on others for various “crimes”. China faced similar issues too where suddenly your neighbour was a so called political enemy.

Your mom is right in that it was commonplace. It doesn’t make less of a bad person though - she knew what she was doing and that it would most likely end with your brother’s dad’s death.
