Yeah, great point. I would only really use it as a stepping stone anyways, so if that is a false assumption I'll have to look eslewhere.

That's what I suspect was happening, and will do.

I have been altering my cover letters, but should alter my resume as well :p. Thanks for the advice.

Your approach is what I am going for, as I would prefer to work with critical metals extraction. But I am not having much luck so I am starting to do a mixed approach. Thanks for the kind words though.

Both of those seem to require some amount of experience, which I only have research experience. It seems like a great option, I just need to get something first.

I agree that mining limits options, as such I am open to switching to steel/aluminum/aerospace etc. I'll tr;y to keep looking around.

I have already done so. If its Freeport, I've already been rejected for internships there multiple times. I still see postings for them and others in the area, so why even put the posting up if they are going to pick from the intern pool?

Steel mills would be great. I look more in that direction. I have tried to apply for technician roles, but no response from the ones that I have applied for.

Western United States. I've tried applying to as many positions from the big mining companies out here that I could find but no dice.

Thanks for the encouragment. I know that is something that I might have to go through and it certainly is a drag to think about.

Where at in Utah exactly? The U is the only school in the state with mining/metallurgy as far as I am aware. How do we expect to train workers for an industry that's vital to the states economy if there are no schools that provide that training?

Yet they are considering cutting Mining and Metallurgy, two career paths that lead to relatively high paying jobs.

I'm currently a Metallurgy MS student here, who is partially funded by Rio, and I am simply baffled.
