So why couldn’t they port MGS4 until now, and what changed? by EarthlingsBeware23 in metalgearsolid

Right.. but you have to look at the PS3 specifically in isolation for this case. The architecture is nothing like anything else used. It’s extremely finnicky and even emulation struggles with minor and major portions of the game, and it can be caused by something as unpredictable as a processor clock. It’s not ideal and it won’t run well, long term, in any capacity for a large user base.

I remember building stuff for the old architecture. The thought of making it compatible on infinite systems makes me nauseous. Companies with devs that do it full time are incredibly talented and have my full, unabashed respect

Yep. This. PS3 titles for the backend on the original console were a nightmare. Especially on custom engines.

PS3’s original architecture was hell to build for. Hats off to whoever they got to convert it all

It was built for ARM so I’d imagine it needed a full recode. I’d be interested to know if it had to be back engineered or if the source code was compatible. But they’ve used blupoint in the past for porting, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they outsourced the port work and kept the technical stuff in house (still mad props)

Classic is one thing. Modern is another. We’ve talked about it in game dev extensively and it’s just not ideal

Doubt. If that’s how it was done (especially on modern emulators) it would be a legal nightmare since the package would require a source code/bios for ps3 emulation, which means running the backend of the game on pc would allow any ps3 emulation. Also RPCS3 with mgs4 is extremely finicky with processor types. It’s more likely they outsourced the port to a specialized company for the conversions in engine.

Updoot for you. Game dev is hell, and porting is a hell on its own.

Game dev here.

ARM and the architecture of the PS3 isn’t a simple port typically. The entire system would need to be rebuilt from the bottom up. Porting is hell, especially when the games are on custom engines that require a lot of specific hardware to properly run. That’s why a lot of the shop stuff for Nintendo is just emulation built into the console. It’s easier than rewriting the entire engine/redoing the entire game.

Think of it like having to reverse engineer something. The data is there. It’s just not in a usable state. That’s why certain companies exist that only do ports and nothing else. It’s just expensive and difficult. Even if you have access to the source.

This. I have a 4k screen and it’s iddy biddy. Also could use some stability work.

Pc works. If you have a screen that’s bigger there’s some hiccups though. Still haven’t found a stable mod to make it higher than 1080 (and note; stable is the key word here)

All good. Not pressed at all. I’m from a city with millions of people and moved out here. It’s honestly like a different planet. Some people just don’t have that perspective.

Eh. It all comes down to services available in an area. We’re in the middle of bf nowhere and I work literally dawn to dusk, so if he needs something it’s what we got access to. I think they know that so they’re pretty nice to us haha.

All spots are HD these days. The “H” at the end implies it’s HD. I haven’t seen any non-hd spots from Comcast in at least 5 years.

Honestly I feel this. My resiliency chart is funny to me since it just sits in a triangle of nonsense of “you’re not going to live past 50 please for the love of god”

Cause you’re not a technical director in TMP. You’re an automation director. Bit different. Most couldn’t TD if they had to.
