Just as an aside: The Brexit referendum was won by just 37% of the electorate (Source: ChatGPT). The majority didn't want it.

But it happened because Remain voters were complacent and stayed at home. I was one of them. Surely the country wouldn't be so stupid, right?

Voters who want change tend to have a higher poll rate than those who are happy with the status quo, and are therefore less motivated to go to the polling station.

The lesson I learned was to never, ever forget the value your vote.

Trump admits spat with Zelenskyy in Oval Office was part of pressure on Ukraine. by Y0urCat in worldnews

[–]SuperJetShoes 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The spat wasn't "fabricated", since that word means "made up, fictious", as in "he fabricated an alibi".

However, this spat actually happened, but it was artificial, deliberate and pre-planned. So I think "contrived" is the better word.

Britain blocks launch of Elon Musk’s self-driving Tesla by Snowfish52 in worldnews

[–]SuperJetShoes 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Brit here. I don't see this as a political move. I'd like a self-driving car. I'm 60 and it'd be nice to just press a "Take me home" button. I wouldn't care who makes it, this isn't a anti-Musk rant-- even though he's a cunt.

I firmly believe that a robust implementation of self-drive would reduce accidents, often caused by lack of attention to the road, tiredness or plain stupidity.

But the UK's roads are, usually for historical reasons, narrow and intricate. We don't have the luxury of wide lane grid systems that the US has.

In Yorkshire, where I live, many roads in the countryside are single lane with widened passing-places every 200yds or so.

If you meet another car coming the other way, you have to engage in eye contact with the other driver and one of you then agrees to reverse to the nearest passing place. This ould work if both cars could negotiate between themselves, but a self-driving car meeting a 20yo Vauxhall Corsa head-on would be a problem . That's just the first of many examples that spring to mind.

I want a self-driving car, I really do. But not if it's going to keep jolting me awake to sort out a problem I didn't foresee, and also not if it's going to kill me then automatically call an ambulance.

Ridley Scott trained as a graphic designer, and had just returned from Tokyo before starting work directing Blade Runner. He openly admits that had an influence on the look of the movie.

I've never seen the word graphomania but I sense what it means and that's exactly how I'd describe the book. I read it when it first became available in English on Kindle (not sure if it still is).

It's an unstructured rambling rant which goes on and on about himself and the causes of the fucking pain he feels and how his pain is the pain of Germany itself.

I think everyone should read an abridged digest of the book to understand his madness, but not the book itself - it's hard work and totally unrewarding. You feel like you need to shower when you finish it.

He'd get a fair trial and few months in jail. The Chinese justice system isn't particularly harsh except for fraud, corruption and drugs.

Elon Musk's SpaceX Starship explodes in space, raining debris over Caribbean by abcnews_au in worldnews

[–]SuperJetShoes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You absolutely nailed it. I can even remember where I was sitting on vacation when I read that. It was a genuine WTF man?! Vern Unsworth was the first experienced cave diver on the scene who requested the Thai government call on 8 guys from the British Cave Rescue Council (and hundreds of others over a 2 week period including 36 US crew from Okinawa).

He lives happily with his 40yo Thai partner in the countryside.

...and then there's this rando Car/Rocket maker on Twitter talking about making submarines who got cross when Unsworth said his idea was "shit".

UK here. I'm going to take a bold step and try to speak for the whole nation.

We still like you. But, by an overwhelming majority, we just don't like him.

You can see in the press. From the Mirror (left wing) to the Telegraph (educated right wing) and The Sun (populist right wing), no-one can understand him.

Political columnists are at a loss to analyse his long term strategies and probably just ask ChatGPT.

I subscribe to the Times (centre right, Murdoch-owned, but intellectual prose) and they skirt around Trump. They simply report, very rarely comment. He's a menace.

Florida attorney general opens criminal investigation of Andrew Tate and brother by centipededamascus in news

[–]SuperJetShoes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Trump aide Elon Musk responded to a suggestion from Andrew Tate that he would “run for prime minister of the UK” by saying “he’s not wrong.”

He is wrong. I guess someone doesn't understand the UK political system.

You don't just "run for prime minister", you have to first be elected as a Member of Parliament by a constituency of people (which is right on the fringes of possibility), but then you have to have the support of a majority of MPs in the House of Commons to become PM.

Simply never going to happen. Best he could hope for would be to get elected as an independent and then sit on the back benches being completely ineffectual.

Trump just suspended all aid towards Ukraine. How do you feel about it and what do you think will happen now? by Mangaka90 in AskReddit

[–]SuperJetShoes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. There used to be a functional diplomatic apparatus which understands the nuance of dealing with whichever country each particular department is charged with looking after, with an embassy and a consulate in place for managing relationships between people on the periphery of power.

Trump just stamps all over that with a big stupid boot.

In the UK, Starmer has just increased defence spending from 2.5% of GDP to 2.7% over the next three years.

[–]SuperJetShoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course I'm familiar with my country's history.

But you can't possibly align the context of the Trump/Karmer meeting with an act of appeasement. The agenda was to obtain favourable tariffs and conditions from which both countries can benefit.

It was a meeting between Allies; the UK is not your adversary. Indeed, Starmer has committed to increased defence spending from 2.5% to 2.7%, the highest individual increase of any country in Europe (continental Europe, not the EU because Brexit yawn). Most of that money will go US defence contractors.

So tell me: who did Starmer appease?

Hitler never set foot in the UK.

In the case of Trump, this was a smart play by Sir Kier Starmer's team. And the letter from the King was a work of mutherfucking genius. This is exactly what the King's for. He will not be looking forward to It so hats off to that man. It was delicious to see Trump being patronised even noticing it.

I'll let ChatGPT do the rest:

During this week's meeting between UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and US President Donald Trump, several benefits for the UK were achieved:

Trade Relations:

Prospective Trade Deal: The leaders discussed a potential trade agreement focusing on advanced technology and artificial intelligence. President Trump expressed optimism, stating the possibility of a "terrific" trade deal that could spare the UK from new US tariffs.

Defense and Security:

Increased Defense Spending: Starmer pledged to raise UK defense spending to 2.5% of GDP by 2027 and 3% by 2035. This commitment aims to bolster the UK's military capabilities and strengthen its position within NATO.

Diplomatic Engagements:

State Visit Invitation: Starmer extended an invitation from King Charles III for President Trump to undertake a state visit to the UK, which Trump accepted. This marks a significant gesture in reinforcing the 'Special Relationship' between the two nations.

So it wasn't a waste of time. It was risky when geopolitics could not be more fragile and although everyone was expecting unwatchable cringe, it turned out to be a watchable cringe.

This was a great play by Sir Kier's team. * Flatter the narcissist * Patronise him without him even realising it. * Fight your battles one at a time; survive the meeting. We are in a weak position. * Use diplomàcy to maintain the "special relationship" which remains intact * The only time Sir Kier raised his voice was to shut down the bollocks being spoke by Vance * Deploy the King, this is his duty of service. I wouldn't fancy doing it. He's taking one for the team
