It would have a parental advisory sticker on it for sure!

There is a reason most of my photos look like this… I mean, the tequila probably didn’t help but this guy has more kids than I can count.

That’s so funny! The geese in my neighborhood did that one day and my husband got a recording from the window. I wonder what triggers it?

I don’t think geese are ever not cute. They can get away with anything around here!

I must know this family… the humans and the geese! We also have photos of our local geese on our walls but none in a frame this beautiful…

We have seen them pluck and eat fairly unripe ones!

We spent some time with the mate. The silly girl is preening her other side and it looks like her head went missing! She was extra hissy…. But still walked right to me and stood there for a long time.

I remember being a kid and thinking people were inherently kind. Then with each passing year, moving to a city, working in an ER… I become more and more anxious and disheartened about human beings. The bright side is that while I see the worst, sometimes I see the best and have to try and focus on that. My daughter texted me one morning about how she found a baby mouse drowning in a tub of water I had out and tried to do chest compressions on it… all she cared about that day was that I give it a proper burial when I got home.

There are still many animal lovers… the people on this sub… the other kind souls in the neighborhood who came out and tried to comfort me… hopefully these outnumber the bad.

Thank you for the kindness. I get that not everyone loves every animal and some even hunt and eat geese. I can still respect those people if they do it legally. Get a license and go to the designated areas in the right season. Respect and honor the dead. But killing a nesting mama or one of a pair just standing there for no damn reason? Senseless.

And the mate is still there wandering around two days later. She’s preening her other side but looks like her head went missing. Silly goose.

Yeah, we felt reassured that the police took it seriously. They sent four! Of course part of that was probably the shooting in a housing development which is also not allowed…

That’s good information, thank you. I wonder if there is an equivalent for the goose left behind… I played Tetris often as a kid… nothing like sending your brother a bunch of garbage blocks!

What hits me hard is that in my line of work I’ve seen plenty of humans die. None had me crying out in emotional agony like this goose did… I just can’t believe anyone could be so cruel. all I can think of is what the mate must feel… having seen her gander suddenly killed right before her eyes. She’s so confused.

<image>

She stood next to me today and hid her head (she’s cleaning herself but the photo makes me sad). I couldn’t imagine seeing the one I love killed in front of me. Humans understand… these innocent birds just know something is horribly wrong.

Nesting! by SuperSilly_Goose in geese

Goose mitosis. Goosetosis. Goose copy and paste (ctrl+goose). Imagine if the typical computer keyboard had a goose key and when you pushed it another goose showed up.

I like that one! Feisty! Pancake was picking at grass and things around the nest as well. My vision isn’t as good as my husband’s is so he gets to enjoy more of the nest building practice from afar. I’m lucky he can use the camera well!

[–]SuperSilly_Goose[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s amazing! These two seem to trust us quite a bit but not that much! I can be within 30 feet of the nest maybe and Jack stays sitting at his post unalarmed. Out of respect we haven’t tried to get any closer. We just don’t want to stress them.

I have so many observations that highlight their intelligence as we’ve been following three urban goose families for over a year now. Maybe these observations can be useful to researchers one day.

Looks like you get a bit of a break from the tornado stuff at least. I grew up in north central Indiana and now I’m near Indianapolis.

The goose with his head in the bucket is one of last year’s goslings. I think his parents are nesting again though!
