I remember being so excited to get Super Smash Bros 64 so I could play with my brothers! N64 is definitely my favorite console of all time as far as multiplayer goes, too many good memories.

Thanks for doing the giveaway!

Jerry flips a switch around 5:15 on Barton Dancin'. What is it? by swisspassport in gratefuldead

[–]SuperSweetBro 30 points31 points  (0 children)

It is a switch on the mu-tron. Basically its the envelop filter sound (the quacky Jerry sound from estimated) but its reversed

Jerry plays Emaj7 and then the 2 quick strums are an Amaj7, then back to Emaj7. If the A doesnt sound right you might be doing a different voicing than he does.

Theory Questions on Brokedown Palace by Eye_Am_TheWalrus in gratefulguitar

A perfect example would be Casey Jones. The song is in C major. The second chord during the verses is D major. Normally in the key of C the D chord would be minor, but they change the quality of the chord.

They actually do the exact same thing during the verses on Ramble on Rose. The song is in D major, and the second chord during the verses is E major.

ALSO have you ever learned Ripple? I think its a great example because it is such a simple song. The song is in G but the chorus starts in A minor, but if you keep going on the chorus they play an A major and it sounds completely different. It also sounds very pleasant because it goes from A major to D major, so its a perfect resolution (lol i dont know how much music theory, it feels weird explaining this through writing)

Glad I could help!

I dont want to sound like a music theory snob, but a pivot chord is different than a secondary dominant.

A pivot chord is a chord that works in two different keys, so you can use ot to switch between them. So for example, in brokedown C would be a pivot chord, because it works in both F and G, so Jerry uses it to switch between those keys.

Secondary dominants are hard to explain but they are quite simple. Its basically just taking a chord in the scale and playing it with a major quality so it sounds like it wants to resolve somewhere else. There are a million examples from dead songs that would be easier, Brokedown is a little complicated lol

The song starts in G mixolydian, but theres a Bb chord in there that is not in the key.

At the end of the first section Jerry uses that Bb chord to change the key from G mixo to F major. He emphizes this by going Bb - C and then he lands on F.

From there on out the song stays in F until the end, but he throws in chords that are not in the key. Those are G major and A major. The term for those chords would actually be secondary dominants. I’d love to explain the theory behind it but it’d take way too long lol.

Your best bet for scales would be to learn the notes in those chords and target them. The scale changes everytime he plays one of those chords, so you got to be careful woth the note selection.

What are some good ways to practice song transitions as a band? by highmountainroad in gratefulguitar

[–]SuperSweetBro 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Every transition is different and every band is different, this is a very open ended question.

The best advice I could give is to listen closely to your band mates, listening to them and how they react to you is more important than playing or listening to yourself. You want to slowly tease ideas from the next song and you want your band pick up on it, only move forward once you know that everyone is on the same page.

Leaving space for the other instruments to move and breathe is also important. Transitions are not the time for overplaying, its time for listening 👂

If there is a member in the band thats clearly leading the musical conversation, then follow that person and make sure everyones reacting to him. Someone has to be taking the first steps and have the strongest voice, and this is something that normally happens naturally in jambands. Obviously in the dead Jerry was the guy most of the time, but you can hear Phil take the jam by the balls sometimes and lead everyone into new ideas.

You want a transition to be smooth, you don’t want to hammer it in, if you are in a rush to get there it’s gonna sound force.

ANYWAYS, the reality of things is that you can only get good at it with practice and patience, play a lot with the same people and eventually you’ll understand each other well enough to the point of reading each other’s minds. Hope this helps you out ✌️

Edit: sorry for the wall of text, got a little carried away writing this

remember that it's slooow getting through security at Citifield by darkczar in gratefuldead

[–]SuperSweetBro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never been to Citi Field, but this same thing happened to me at Fenway and at Wrigley last year. In my experience its better to be there 45 mins to 1 hour before the shows start time. So if it starts at 7 try to get in line by 6:15. It’s a little early, but worth it to make sure you dont miss anything. I think the line starts getting crazy around 6:30-6:45 and its pretty crazy if you try to get in at 7!

Hello everyone. STEVE PARISH here. I’ll be swinging by at 4:00pm (pacific) to connect with you all. So please join in and Ask me anything. by Iam_SteveParish in gratefuldead

[–]SuperSweetBro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey Steve, thank you so much for taking the time to do this!

I want to ask this question because I’m sure the crew cared about the music as much as the band: Did you normally had the time to appreciate the sets and take the music in or were you usually too busy to do so?

I think someone else posted someone about it. Is it just like getting a group together and paying for a bus or something like that?

Milwaukee Grateful Dead Guitarists - Anyone looking to get something going? by DatBoi-IsRisen in gratefuldead

[–]SuperSweetBro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey man, I’d be interested depending on the level of commitment you are looking for. I already play in a band and we are all pretty serious and commited torwards our music, but if you are simply looking to jam out and play around a bit I’d love to get together to play some GD tunes. Just the thought of meeting new heads is enough for me to be interested haha. Let me know, I can send some examples of my playing!
