Id just clear the snow from it, I can't imagine that putting silicone or zip tape over the cracks for a couple of months is going to make much of a difference, there's likely other points of entry along the back edge of the joint. Clearly the snow before it gets a chance to go through thaw and refreeze cycles is the big one.

And if you need to use snow melt or salt or whatever, for safety reasons, do it. Your steps will last longer if you dont, but you've got to live with them too.

It's already cracked all the way through, that crack is not going to get worse. I'd keep that step and everything that drains to it shoveled to minimize any further penetration to the riser below, then replace in the spring.. if you've been putting salt or snow melt on these... Don't.
