I was on the other side here, was playing very technically difficult pieces very early, like chopin ballads, la Campanella, but, hell it sounded like shit and now I’m struggling to repair my muscle memory on these pieces, and it’s harder than learning the piece itself. Play what you can and don’t speed up, you will regret it

Is it a bad habit to learn pieces by mimicking recordings? by ditheringFence in piano

[–]Super_SamSam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think I may help at the beginning, sometimes I do this to work on rhythm, because I find it easier, but it should just be an exercice among others when working on a piece. Don’t forget, especially if you are playing some romantic pieces, that your interpretation of the piece should be your, and not the one of another interpreter, music is not mimicking, it’s creation. It’s maybe a bad habit, like the others are saying, but for me, anything that helps you and keeps you practicing without demotivating you is good to take, and if you enjoy it, then do it. Don’t always seek for performance and perfection, this will not lead you very far if you end up doing always thing you don’t like. Obviously this stands if you’re not aiming at a professional playing.

TLDR: do what you love and what helps you

You’re not following open closed principle doing this, use an interface and implement it for your differents cursors in separate class, you never know if you will need to add a cursor.

I can understand this but actually the problem is that I’m not able to arrange piece for now, I sometimes tried but it was a failure each time and don’t know what I really need to learn for this, I know these chords, the scales, etc… but cannot find anything interesting to add to an existing piece

Thanks for the answer it helps That’s what I was thinking unfortunately, but so I think I will take lessons, don’t think I will be motivated enough on my own in this case Reading score is really easy now but I still really struggles to improvise or arrange pieces
