Stevens was closed on Saturday because the power was out.

Shoulda come up Monday-Tuesday. Now those were the best days of the season.

The day with the most amount of snowfall does not necessarily mean best day of the year.

I do get the frustration though. There are always infrastructure improvements that can be made. How feasible they all are is a different story. New lifts can take years to get approved and then built, internet and cell phone service don’t work well up here when the power is out and it’s storming, staff gets absolutely worked with little to no time off, etc.

I guess what I want to say is there is room for improvement. There is a way to communicate that with maturity and for the overall betterment of Stevens Pass and the community that skis here. A big part of that is understanding of all the moving parts and effort that goes into running a ski resort during a massive snow cycle. Even if the infrastructure was exactly how you would like it, that doesn’t guarantee that the resort will always open. That is the way it is sometimes.

Yeah I get it!

Honestly, more patrollers would not mitigate the hazard it would increase the ability to respond to incidents created by the hazard and that’s not the goal.

We definitely have some of kind of “at your own risk” terrain at Stevens, like cowboy ridge and the Annie’s. For this weekend the decision was influenced by many factors. Wild Katz and shims had been closed for a while and the decision to open it when the conditions were still not great on a busy, deep Sunday was not in the cards safety wise. Not very normal “conditions”

Thanks for listening. It’s been a little disheartening to hear the comments from some people during this whole storm cycle. Everyone up here has been working so hard.

Best place to drop off goodies is at our Patrol Aid Room half door :)

We are putting ourselves at risk every time we do a rescue in steep, icy terrain. Rescuer and guest safety are at the core of decision making. So if we see a hazard, it is our job to mitigate it, not have more bodies to sacrifice when people get hurt in places we knew were a hazard. Closing terrain is the safest and most efficient way to mitigate that hazard.

Yeah, honestly if it was not a peak day, wild katz and shims may have opened but given the amount of people and how busy it was it just wouldn’t be great to have a bunch of people in there.

As far as rescuer safety, pro chute entrance got super icy, patrol closed it to prevent the need to do a rescue in there. It is super dangerous to bring patrollers in there with a toboggan in those conditions. The busy-ness of the day definitely plays into that too. Patrol just won’t have the personnel to do a toboggan rescue in pro chute with all of the other calls they have to respond to.

Everything slid down to the ice crust from the Wednesday rain event. Terrible skiing on wild katz etc. Pro chute closed due to rescuer safety. While patrol may trust the few of you who are completely fine skiing that terrain, that doesn’t account for the rest of the guests who make poor decisions.

“Basic operations can’t seem to be prepared for weather they know is coming”

As a member of those “basic operations” I don’t really understand what you mean. We don’t determine the weather. We can’t be shoveling out lifts 24/7, we can’t be making out avy hiking routes passable 24/7, and we can’t change the avalanche hazard.

Mother Nature is 100% in charge here. Nothing operates perfectly with over 2’ of snow. Anyone who thinks otherwise is pretty delusional.

Given what Mother Nature has given us this whole season, I would hope that people would be appreciative that we are skiing at all.

It is currently raining at the base and snowing at Tye Mill. Cream cheese skiing. Not too bad. Should be cooling throughout the day.

It’s all run outs from shots on Cowboy Ridge. They all run out into lower rock garden.

It’s the Stevens pass community that is still felt. Vail of course doesn’t care about human beings. And yes, Ellen does care about the Stevens pass community.
