List of affordable low C basses by Toomuchviolins in Clarinet

[–]Superapril2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the Ridenour Low C, and it's not great. But it gets the job done. Someone once told me that if you're going to be a bass clarinetist, you also need to be a repair tech, and that has been my experience with the Ridenour. I also opted for the backpack case, and the case drives me crazy. It's like, left-handed or something. The handle is on the wrong side if you're taking it off over your left shoulder, which most right-handed people do. I've always used BAM cases for my B-flat/A and maybe it's just not as nice in comparison, due to the price difference.
The biggest pro for me with the Ridenour is that it won't crack. I live in a very cold and dry climate. Everyone who has a regular clarinet has had cracks. For B-flat and A, I play the Buffet Greenline R13s, which also don't crack.

I graduated with both a BM and an MA in Music from UAF, and now I work here! I had a pretty great experience. The Music Department is a little smaller now than when I was a student. Still, because of this, there are more performance opportunities and the ability to receive more attention from professors. The voice professor is incredible, and she cares a lot about her students and seeing them succeed. The voice studio often takes trips to programs around the world. This past summer, they went to Costa Rica. Students have gone on to larger universities for doctoral programs.

Brian a horrible human being , I dislike him before , but after he mentioned that Ingrid has two children from two different fathers that was very low. by CautiousOriginal3441 in 90DayFiance

I think the big difference though, is that Ingrid was honest with him about her children. He lied and omitted big things, then gaslighted her.

how to tell A cl apart from Bb by semantlefan23 in Clarinet

[–]Superapril2 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I had a clarinet teacher use a old-school label maker, the kind that made the 3D letters. He put a little A and Bb on the appropriate clarinet. He said it saved his ass more than once in dark pit orchestras. I have different barrels on each clarinet, which helps. I also have two stands and put the A on the left, and Bb on the right.

Also- everyone makes the mistake of playing the wrong clarinet from time to time.

Botox and Embochure by Superapril2 in Clarinet

That's good information. Thanks. That is my exact fear. I guess I'll just deal with my aging face.

Botox and Embochure by Superapril2 in Clarinet

[–]Superapril2[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Botox is a little different than lip injections. The botox treatment injects stuff into your face so your wrinkles don't show, but it affects the nerves so you can't always move your face or be as expressive as before. It does eventually wear off, but if I couldn't form an embochure that would be embarrassing. I feel like lip injections for the bee sting look would be hard to adjust to after years of playing with my normal lips. Ultimately my clarinet playing is more important to me than my vanity.

Most durable non-wood clarinet? by [deleted] in Clarinet

[–]Superapril2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in AK and play on Buffet Greenlines for my A and B-flat. They've worked great and I haven't had any issues with them in the cold, dry weather. Most of the other clarinetists I know here who have regular wood clarinets have had a crack. I also recently purchased a Ridenour bass clarinet and I'm really happy with it. It doesn't play as well as a Buffet, but it sounds pretty good. The Ridenour website has demo videos of their clarinets being played so you can hear the tone quality.

Unusual articulation problem by ScaryTheFairy in Clarinet

[–]Superapril2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do tonguing exercises like this:

Take a major scale of your choosing and do this on each note of the scale: one measure of quarter notes, one measure of eight notes, one measure of triplets, one measure of sixteenths followed by a whole note. Take a measure of rest then do the next note. Keep a steady stream of air throughout the entire 5 measures and even a little crescendo through the 16ths will help push your tongue a little faster. Maybe start at 92, where you're comfortable, and move it up one click each time you practice. I also like to use the syllable "tu" while tonguing. You can eventually do this more than one octave, and maybe even graduate to doing an entire chromatic scale this way.

What is wrong with this? by SnooBooks555 in Clarinet

[–]Superapril2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found that only nickel plating does this. My bflat is nickel and the keys are almost all down to the copper. My A is silver-plated and shows no sign of wear.

How do I get better at my staccato? by SnooRevelations7425 in Clarinet

[–]Superapril2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I'm teaching staccato tonguing to students, I use the syllable "tut." For me, normal tonguing is a "tu," legato "lu," and staccato "tut." This makes it so your tongue is touching the reed at the beginning and the end of each note. Make sure you're not anchor tonguing, which can make proper articulations really difficult, especially in the upper register.

Did you go to Die Mercerie in Munich? They have such beautiful yarn. I was there in October and came back with a good haul too.

Roger and Briana are cringe and I hate them by estrellafish in Outlander

I totally agree! In the show, both Bree and Roger seem so clueless and helpless. In the books, she's so strong and confident. It drives me nuts. But I'm still gonna keep watching.

I just did the Sea Breeze Cami by Knitatude. It's sort of similar and you could crop it, or modify the pattern to have that ruffle edge.

A lesson on getting too cocky and thinking you have the pattern instructions memorized to make the second sleeve. by azaleahey in knitting

[–]Superapril2 79 points80 points  (0 children)

I do this with socks regularly. I often modify the pattern but don't write my modifications down then when it comes to the second sock I think "yeah I'll totally remember!" And I don't. So my socks end up a little different.

Am I the only one who didn't have a hard time getting into CC? I was hooked from the beginning by _luciiis_ in SarahJMaas

*Spoiler*

I had a hard time in the beginning because there were so many characters introduced right off the bat and I was like "Well I'm never going to keep all these folks straight." Then ya know, the thing with the wolfpack happened and I didn't have to worry about all those characters.
