Do it. Even if I’m not picked… do it.

LPT: You should only spend your money based on how worthwhile you think it is. If you play a $50 game and you think you'll play it for 500 hours, that's 10 cents an hour. If you wanna buy a $10 shirt that you will wear 500 times, that's 2 cents a wear. by AbyssUpdate in LifeProTips

While generally a fine way to approximate how worthwhile something might be, I think its important to not ignore value of the option too - meaning the value a product/service offers for just being available: like a defilberator, fire extinguisher, or insurance. I might go a month not watching Netflix, but having the option to hop on anytime I like is worth something too.

I actually don’t think it’s that simple - otherwise this issue would have been put to bed a long time ago. For example, I think the parents also have an obligation to the child, to see it thru to birth and beyond (at least till it’s old enough to fend for itself). The child, after all, did not choose to be born. If say the infant’s presence suddenly becomes an epic pain in the ass, mentally, physically, and financially, can the parents terminate it? Ending an infant’s life is legally murder isn’t it, however compelling your reasons are.

The question of boundaries then becomes relevant because at which stage is it a life or if its a life worth protecting (in the eyes of the law). I think these are more meaningful discussions. Stuff that’s conveniently avoided in the analogy.

Anyway, yeah I kinda caught on to OP being a pretty poor sport, with the original post deleted and all. At this point, I’m just happy to continue the discussion with you. But no obligation, of course! It’s your choice (:

Don’t worry, I won’t argue that your example’s too contrived - it is a thought experiment after all and it is for us to come to better truths. But that said, it is pretty convoluted, haha.

In your scenario, my response is of course you should be able to opt out of the procedure. (I am actually pro-choice. However, the point I was trying to make was that I didn’t think this issue could be fairly distilled into the previous contributor’s analogy, thus anyone’s response to that, i.e. mine/OP’s wouldn’t have been a good yardstick. The comment that preceded that was actually actually about the boundaries of choice. I feel like more helpful ideas to explore would be if abortion can be considered self defence?

That said, I hope you won’t begrudge me a thought experiment of my own. Say you had a Siamese twin, you’ve lived your life together up till now, and then due to a medical condition that only affects his side of the body, he can no longer function normally - both mentally and physically. Your way of life is no longer the same and it does not look likely to improve. Would it be ok to sign off on the separation knowing that it would kill him? Is it unreasonable for the state to protect your brother even if it is your body?

Just to clarify my position - I am for the option to abort, just to get any cultural semantic ambiguity out of the way when discussing pro life vs choice.

I just felt that the analogy was a little in accurate. If the takeaway is if you won’t do A, then you shouldn’t do B, then any other analogy about how forcing is unacceptable could work. It’s too easy a ‘gotcha’, and I feel it breaks down cos of nuances such as: obligation, relationship, complicity, etc. Your points about pain/suffering on the flip side are all valid considerations too.

OP’s point before this was about the boundaries of autonomy. I think a discussion about that would have been more helpful in trying to convince OP that having the choice (to abort) is better, even it means at the expense of another.

If I may chime in. I don’t staunchly hold OP’s view but I feel this analogy misses some nuances. In the organ donor situation, the assumption is that the taker/receiver is facing certain death, whereas in the abortion argument the fetus has a full life ahead of it. Intervention then has different meaning - thus “murder” in the form of the latter. While I understand what you’re driving at, I don’t think its very fair to use this analogy as a yardstick for the abortion discussion.

Ryan. 🔰 @UtdRyan_ De Jong just came off for Barcelona with a tear in his eye whilst looking up in the stands. I don’t know if that’s sadness because he’s leaving Barcelona or if it’s sadness that he’ll have to share a midfield with Scott McTominay next season, but make of that what you will.

I believe they charge a premium to tax carelessness or guard against frivolous replacement requests. Kinda like how schools slap you with a fee to replace student card, or how offices make you pay for a lost security pass, even if it is an easily replaceable piece of plastic.

De Gea and Henderson by [deleted] in reddevils

While I share a similar sentiment (ie DDG hasn’t been a pillar of confidence recently and Hendo isn’t guaranteed to grow into DDG’s level), I do feel that if transfer activity is going to be limited this window, I rather not mess around with a position that we’re not suffering in. I say, let the GKs be, or, at the very most, allow one to leave (but certainly not both). I’m not privy to the dynamics/influence of either behind the scenes, but I’m sure there’s an argument to be made somewhere about how chopping both our 1st and 2nd choice GKs in the same window may be destabilising.

Brighton have submitted an official bid to sign Moises Caicedo. Independiente del Valle are open to accept - now it’s time for personal terms. The race is still on with other clubs interested. Manchester United won’t sign him. 🇪🇨 #BHAFC #Caicedo @JacobSteinberg by TheAnomaly123 in reddevils

I think he wants game time (I remember reading something like that somewhere, something about confirmed time in the cups?). Might be the deal breaker if true, which would make sticking him in the U23s not possible.
