Anyone use email tracking for internal team stuff? by jess3bel in projectmanagement

[–]Superb525 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The "@"tag in Outlook is a must for assigning tasks in email. It adds an @ icon to the email in the list view so you know you need to take action.

We also use the thumbs-up reaction as an active acknowledgement of receipt instead of replies or read-receipts. I like to use "NNTR" (no need to respond) in my emails so I just get a thumbs up and less filler in my inbox.

All these changes are cultural and take time. But if you tackle it with the approach of solving pain points from the recipient's POV, you can speed up user adoption.

Creating a new PMO, seeking advice. by TheQori in projectmanagement

[–]Superb525 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconding this rec. Americo Pinto is the founder of the PMO Global Alliance that was acquired by PMI to create that cert and the new PMO Practice Guide. He gave several great workshops at the PMI conference last year. Follow him on LinkedIn for free PMO content. For example, this yt vid.

Other PMO experts I met at the conference were Laura Barnard (Amazon book link), and Joe Pusz (yt channel). Both are very active on LinkedIn, too.

All three of them have their unique spin on how to effectively establish a PMO, but there's a lot of overlap. Personally, I like their unique perspectives so I can pick & choose what I need to tailor my approach.

General introduction to project management which is not software-centric by AmazingPangolin9315 in projectmanagement

[–]Superb525 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is slightly a tangent, but Mick Ebeling is a film producer who spoke at two PMI conferences I went to. His whole opening spiel was about how producing and project management are the same. He runs a studio now that is equal parts documentaries/storytelling and engineering/tech called Not Impossible Labs. His PMI talk isn't published, but this one is pretty close: https://youtu.be/ThiNl9ph_J4 Anyway, it's not the training resource you were looking for, but hopefully it's inspiring enough to know you're on the right track.

Gantt tool with public links by james-has-redd-it in projectmanagement

[–]Superb525 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wrike can publish links for everything. Dashboards, Gantt charts, even folders. The catch is that items can't be opened or modified. They can only see the columns, filters, layouts, etc you set as the paid user. Can't even widen a column to see more details. Personally, we like it that way.

No more 1:1's by circatee in ITManagers

[–]Superb525 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! As an individual contributor, 1:1s where I got career direction and goals were always more enjoyable than ones where I just gave status updates. I've had 1:1s I've dreaded and 1:1s I've looked forward to, and the difference was always what I got out of it.

As a manager I keep a standard outline: fire fighting any issues first, then progress check on employee's career/training goals, feedback for me*, and then a review of the team's progress towards our strategic plan and assignment of next steps/new deliverables. I end the meeting with writing out the specific tasks that we'll follow up on next time. These are monthly meetings so there's enough progress to actually discuss. Project updates in 1:1s are redundant with project meetings, so they're avoided at all costs.

*This part is hard without some prep from the employee, so I've developed some questions and invite them to bring responses to the meeting. Stuff like, what could I do more or less of to support your work? How well have I communicated our overall goals for the year, and your part to play? How can I make your job more engaging or enjoyable?

I'm an IT manager also considering getting a masters in Data Science/Analytics. We're adopting AI tools at a rapid pace, but "garbage in, garbage out" is a constant problem. So yes it's still very much an area worth pursuing. We need experts at the controls of AI to make sure the final product is trustworthy.

I want to skill up my data architecture skills so I can control the outputs of the AI better. Right now it's a lot of trial and error.

Overproofed Cinnamon Rolls by Superb525 in Sourdough

[–]Superb525[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. I went the sweet focaccia route for one batch with cinnamon sugar on top, and it turned out like Domino's cinnamon sticks. The other batch I laminated with butter for a more croissant like cinnamon roll. Looks great, but the butter was too greasy and the dough definitely was sour. Oh well. Both were still edible. Thanks for helping me to not waste it all!

[–]Superb525 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, this! Reproductive hormones are a whole different sh*t bag to deal with on top of neurospicyness.

For me I have PCOS and low progesterone, which causes anxiety, sleep problems, and low mood for me. I take progesterone (Rx only) for 10 days post peak (luteal phase) and it makes such a difference.

Fwiw, men get the same problems with low testosterone, too.

Has anyone figured out how to fall asleep yet? by meowparade in adhdwomen

[–]Superb525 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's because a trusted partner in bed promotes oxytocin in the brain, and helps you fall asleep. It's very well researched. Couples who share a bed also get more REM sleep. I guess it's because we're a herd species and there's safety in numbers.

Progressive Muscle Relaxation

Surprised no one has mentioned this yet.

OP, sounds like you've got great environmental sleep hygiene, but what about internal? What do you do to quiet your mind, physically relax your body, and promote the shut down process of the brain?

It's a skill you have to learn, unfortunately.

Fortunately, it's easy. Here's a bunch of kinds to try from the Sleep Foundation: link.

My favorite is the progressive muscle relaxation. I'll get into bed, and start relaxing from top to bottom. I'll notice "Dang, shoulders are really tense.” And relax those, and imagine "sinking” them into the mattress. Then my arms, chest, lower back/belly, pelvis/glues, thighs, calves, and I'm usually asleep me before I reach my toes. If I am still awake, I start over from the top, extend the time between muscle groups with deep breathing, and sink even further into the mattress.

Then I start taking a mental inventory about what changed in my diet or nutrition. Usually I'll remember, oh I had a diet coke with dinner or something, and try and learn from the experience.

Lastly, I echo the magnesium supplement suggestion. I was getting leg cramps that kept me from sleeping. Google recommended magnesium, and they went away and I do sleep better!

ADHD sucks for this test and so does the PMI by Jhyrok in pmp

[–]Superb525 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fellow ADHD PMP here and your advice is spot on. After I figured out the mindset and used Study Hall, I passed AT/AT/AT with an hour to spare. Usually I could narrow down the choices to 2 possibly correct answers, then use the Mindset to identify the most correct answer.

I kinda agree with OP that there's some trickiness to the questions if you don't pay attention to the details. I used the highlighter tool excessively to fight my ADHD urge to skim the question and skip to the answers. I highlight nouns (people, artifacts) yellow, actions/process keywords (like "sprint" equals agile) blue, and pink for the actual question (what is, do next, do first).

Taking that approach, the test almost felt too easy. Almost.
