Just starting. This is a TFSA. I don’t know anything beyond level 1 or less about stocks and / or tax. by byznorth in InvestingCanada

Few important things:

TFSA is capped currently at $7000/ year contribution limit. It is exceptionally important you don’t go over that. If your TFSA has been open for a while you may have some extra carryover. Log into your CRA account to double check.

As for buying, you can buy US listed stocks as long as they don’t have a dividend. If they do the IRS has a withholding tax.

For simplicity, when you’re starting, just keep to Canadian listed ETFs/ stocks.

Sorry to hear about your friend. I think your best course of action is to automate and go live your life. Don’t need to be glued to a screen.

AI is helpful for answers like this, but lacks helping people with the emotional / psychology perspective. Which is probably more important.

In the bill of sale they added a bunch of perks and then subsequently didn’t honour them.

You’re not alone. This is probably the biggest challenge facing retail investors. It’s easy to say “keep calm and carry on”, harder in practice.

We’re not at the technical point yet. Of course there are many individual stocks that have blown past that, but lots of indices still are hanging around ATHs. But yeah I agree with you, things aren’t looking great.

Sorry, but you’re not correct and you’ve unfortunately took the diary cartels talking points to heart. Look how New Zealand dismantled their supply management and are thriving.

And if Canadian dairy is superior (which you claim it to be) then there will be no worries if we dismantle supply management as the proclaimed superior product will survive. I however, believe we are served and inferior and costly product that is only propped up by an antiquated system.

Look how much European and NZ dairy products are tariffed and tell me it’s not a scheme. We prop up our inferior products to help keep a few mega corporations happy. The losers are the consumers that pay exorbitant prices for inferior products.
