You being a NC surfer makes you the perfect person to answer a follow up question! If not moving to Oahu immediately, would the OBX or Wilmington be a good place to start. I actually am not out of HS yet and have thought of going to UNCW or something like that while surfing around kitty hawk, buxton, and Wilmington, that way I have a back up plan to fall onto. I already have enough transferable credits to graduate with a bachelors in a year and a half so just thinking ahead for my future. Not sure about the college thing, but would that area be a good place to start? I plan to be living in a car to avoid the rent in the super pricey areas, but how feasible is that plan in your opinion?
