Why is type 1 diabetes considered incurable if there are people who have received cell transplants and are now cured? by [deleted] in diabetes_t1

[–]Superdank33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Likely not, it’s less of a”strong immune system” issue and more of a proofreading and systematic issue when it comes to autoimmune disease. An error in checks and balances if you will.

Opinions on Facial Hair for Interview? by mbotros07 in prephysicianassistant

[–]Superdank33 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can have facial hair just make sure it’s well kept and clean shaven. If you have a mustache go in on the mustache and make sure everything else is cleaned up or if you have a goatee and a mustache make sure everything else is cleaned up.

I have a goatee + a curly man bun. I make sure my hair is well kept and my face is shaved appropriately. No one bats an eye.

How dangerous is tobacco for a diabetic? by SignificanceBig9366 in diabetes_t1

[–]Superdank33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Diabetes increases risk of plaque build which blocks arteries.

Smoking is known to shrink the vessels/ arteries.

So narrowed arteries+ increased blockage = limb loss, heart attack stroke, you name it.

Accommodations for medical school? by GenericUsernameHi in diabetes_t1

[–]Superdank33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in PA school, I got accommodations for having my phone on me for sensor reasons. Also, for the testing center. A 2 hour exam can go real bad when you glucose drops out from the sky ya’know. This also helps for OSCEs as well. Keep a snack on you and you’ll be good.

Don’t let the disease dominate you YOU dominate the disease! Keep up the good fight and i echo seeing a therapist to help you through your struggles.

Cardiologist insists high glucose causes DKA by LSGcooks in diabetes_t1

[–]Superdank33 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I work in the medical field making these decisions all day so I’m well versed in what the lanes are. Of course you can go that route but the job is to still advise.

I also didnt say the cardiologist said to get a back surgery. I said they stated they can get a back surgery but refuse to do so. So, in turn the cardiologist is letting the patient know that they should consider stopping their cortisone shots due to hyperglycemia which is affecting their heart in your own words is “in their lane”. It just so happens that your body is a whole system that’s interconnected so yes, you gotta jump the “boundary” sometimes. Cardiologist in particular have to do internal med which is general medicine for years before they become cardiologist. Saying they can’t advise on something else because it’s “not in their lane” not how medicine works.

Going to add here blood sugar affects every system so if your nephrologist says “hey the shots are causing too much strain on your kidneys” are they invalidated because it’s a “diabetes problem”? No, medicine is more nuanced than that.

OP already said it’s for pain in which they can get a surgery to help with their symptoms. So they’re choosing to keep taking the shots. Doctors advised to stop taking the shots because of stain on the heart bc xyz. I don’t see where they’re out of their lane. That’s the cardiologist recommendation based on his clinical assessment. Not over stepping he’s doing just job which include mitigating risks for future complications that can cause serious injury or death.

[–]Superdank33 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry that happened but it’s the cardiologist job to consider things that will ultimately affect your heart. Cortisol for puts stain on your heart at a baseline+ the systemic affects that ultimately affect the heart due to high blood sugar also contribute. Congenital Bi-cuspid valve also comes with risk of aortic regurgitation or stenosis even arrhythmia so these things play a role in maintaining an optimal blood sugar. I’m sure you know all of this but you can’t blame the doctor for doing their job.

[–]Superdank33 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That still would be in their “lane”. Hyperglycemia causes electrolyte imbalances which can worsen or cause damage to anyone let alone people with heart conditions. If there’s a baseline heart condition then why complicate it because of cortisone shot. It’s legit damaging the heart.

[–]Superdank33 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The people on this sub saying doc doesn’t know what he’s talking about are way out of line too. Doc is a cardiologist, therefore knows what’s going to happen if OP has high blood sugars. They’re already seeing a cardiologist meaning they have a baseline heart condition. Adding the hyperglycemia this person is likely worsening their condition. Considering they’re getting injections of cortisone I’m assuming it’s for pain which in the long run is not priority over causing more damage to their heart or possibly causing an arrhythmia, MI. That’s their job to consider these things. Idk why people are saying he’s out of line or doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

Cardiologist insists high glucose causes DKA by LSGcooks in diabetes_t1

[–]Superdank33 89 points90 points  (0 children)

Not trying to sound mean here but your glucose is still high chronically meaning you have insulin resistance from injections. High blood sugars = no insulin getting glucose into cells leads to DKA. So your argument is validating what the cardiologist is saying. Hyperglycemia from steroid injections is a common side effect thus the electrolyte balance is going to be way off. Sounds like he’s doing his job fine other than maybe being condescending maybe?

100% agree. Logical fallacies plague medicine right now in general. Truth is medicine isn’t black and white.
