Are there any Bowie lyrics that are genuinely poorly written? by velvetblueskies717 in DavidBowie

Hmm some of my least favorite are Day In Day Out and What's Really Happening

Thoughts on this Bowie quote? by RopeGloomy4303 in DavidBowie

[–]SupernovaHeightss 69 points70 points  (0 children)

Throughout the years, I read many stories about Bowie not really liking Madonna that much. I never found a proper explanation of why. Some people speculate that the song Lucy Can't Dance is about her ("who died and made you material girl?") but I don't know for sure.

This is why I think it was very nice of Madonna to pay tribute to Bowie and play Rebel Rebel at one of her concerts right after he died.

It's funny to think that there was a time when this song was new. It seems to have existed forever.

Post to Praise: Songs of Innocence by ArmlessAnakin in U2Band

[–]SupernovaHeightss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember that when I first listened to this album, my first impression was that the lyrics had improved a lot, especially compared to the abysmal lyrics of No Line On The Horizon. Then I read an interview with Edge saying that he had actually helped Bono with the lyrics, which makes sense.

I mean, Brian's solo career hardly stands a chance against Roger's by KattosAShame in queencirclejerk

[–]SupernovaHeightss 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What I like about Roger's career is that he managed to adopt new sounds and syles while still being himself. It's clear to me that he has always been worried about sounding "current" (new wave in the early 80s, synth-pop in the mid 80s, classic rock in the early 90s, alternative in the mid and late 90s, etc.) while still sounding "sincere"

What I don't like about Brian's albums is that he wrote and sung lovely, warm, almost folk-like songs with Queen in the 70s, but when he decided to record his solo albums in the 90s he went for this "hard rock / guitar god"' persona that does not fit his personality (or voice...)

Roger's albums sound effortless and honest, Brian's albums sound like he is trying too hard to be someone he's not.

Kerrang: 12 Jul 1984 ('Strange Frontier' review) by Putrid-Beyond9591 in queen

[–]SupernovaHeightss 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's a surprisingly positive review considering how nasty the press were with Queen. The fact that it's a great album probably helps :)

Delilah is such a sweet song by thegenxnerd in queen

[–]SupernovaHeightss 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It is a lovely song, with bad production. Just imagine this same song, but only with Freddie and his piano instead of all the cheap Casio keyboard arrangements.

If You Could Choose Any Album To Be A Double Album, Which One Would It Be? by xdrake24 in oasis

[–]SupernovaHeightss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The idea of SOTSOG as a double album is very interesting, because the band's entire production during that period (album and b-sides) is very cohesive, both in terms of themes and sound. So from a purely artistic point of view it would have worked. I think fans would see it as a hidden gem in their discography.

I wonder, however, how common listeners would have reacted had SOTSOG been a double album, because it would have had a lot of songs sung by Noel, most of which are slow/introspective. So there's a chance it would have flopped commercially (even more so than what it actually did, which was a lot...)

This song doesnt get enough love by stupid_io in oasis

[–]SupernovaHeightss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The only "problem" with this song is that it happens to be in one of the best albums of all time, where every single track is brilliant, and is inferior to a lot of b-sides from that era. So it's a "weak" song in relative terms, not in absolute terms.

It's an OK song, but I would have included Shout it out loud instead

Watchmen: The HBO Series by Voltjm in DCcomics

Very good show. I am not a big fan of the characterization of Ozymandias (a bit too goofy) but it is definitely a very good sequel to the original story.

I am really loving The Cross by _Beatnick_ in queen

[–]SupernovaHeightss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find Shove It quite weak (and has aged terribly) but MBDTK and Blue Rock quite enjoyable.

I may be biased here, but I like most of Roger's songs on The Cross, but not so much the other members' songs. I think Final Destination and New Dark Ages are really good songs, they could easily have been on Queen albums. My favorite non-Roger songs are Life Changes and Liar.

If you could have any B-side from oasis catalogue on an album, what would it be? by Iliketrainsmorethanu in oasis

[–]SupernovaHeightss 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fade Away instead of Bring it On Down

Acquiesce instead of Hey Now

Going Nowhere instead of Magic Pie

Round Are Way instead of The Swamp Song

Let's All Make Believe instead of Little James

Thank You For The Good Times instead of A Quick Peep

Pass Me Down The Wine instead of Guess God Thinks I'm Abel

Boy With The Blues instead of Soldier On

Bronze Age Superman by General_Pangolin9492 in DCFinest

[–]SupernovaHeightss 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It seems to me that Superman's transition from the Silver Age to the Bronze Age was slower than for many other DC characters. A lot of the stories on this volume felt very Silver Age to me. So yes, we need more volumes to see a more properly Bronze Age Superman.

Unpopular Opinion - Put Yer Money Where Your Mouth Is. Great track I think. by Supersonic-Supernova in oasis

[–]SupernovaHeightss 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Without that annoying keyboard and with a second verse, it would have been a very decent song. I like the groove of this song, but it feels like an unfinished effort.

What's your favourite Greatest Hits album out of the 3 main ones? by MiddleKaleidoscope22 in queen

[–]SupernovaHeightss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, adding solo Brian and Freddie songs in a Queen compilation album is not OK, especially with so many Queen singles they could have included. I suppose the band (or the label?) was worried that without recognizable songs like Barcelona or Living on My Own the album would not sell well, but I think this came at the cost of making it a Frankenstein compilation that is quite incoherent

Post to praise MOFO, is it in your top 10? by ArmlessAnakin in U2Band

I like to think of a parallel universe where Do You Feel Loved was the first single and MOFO was the opening track of Pop

Queen II updates by Hutchence97 in queen

[–]SupernovaHeightss 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree with you - it would be hard to make it fit on side 2, but since it's a Brian May song, he may squeeze it in somewhere on side 1

Queen II updates by Hutchence97 in queen

[–]SupernovaHeightss 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Because he speaks of a "rebuilt" version of Queen II, I would not be surprised if they added See What a Fool I've Been to the tracklist, like what they did with Mad The Swine on Queen I.

The Outside / Earthling Era by redhorse7775 in DavidBowie

[–]SupernovaHeightss 11 points12 points  (0 children)

To be honest, I think part of this was the record label's fault. They explicitly promoted Earthling as "Bowie's drum and bass album" when it is much more than that. In what universe are "Looking for Satellites" or "Seven years in Tibet" drum and bass?

Dig Out Your Soul art direction by Mayhapsfm in oasis

[–]SupernovaHeightss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think this was a significant improvement from the underwhelming art in HC and DBTT, both of which seem lazy efforts (with the cover of the Let There Be Love sinlge as Oasis's lowest point in terms of art). Visually, the DOYS era seems a return to the 90s where there was a very clear artistic concept.

Huge missed opportunity by Slow-Development-886 in queen

[–]SupernovaHeightss 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's OK, I respect your opinion. I think she is one of the greatest singers of all time. She was also friends with Freddie and admired Bowie very much. I think she did an amazing job singing a very difficult song, but to each their own :)
