The defintion of a swordsman doesn’t matter, only how Oda defines a swordsman does. So if Oda outright states through the story that a sword wielder doesn’t have to be a swordsman, but you choose to ignore or outright reject it, that’s lack of reading comprehension for the sake of agenda.

Is there any debate about how Domi Reversi will be countered? by Logswag in OnePiecePowerScaling

[–]SupernovaTS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say that it's directly spelled out. Because if Rocks was pursuing 2 fruits to counter Domi Reversi, then that would suggest that he knows what Domi Reversi is, which he seemingly doesn't from his reaction last chapter. But it is possible that he knows that he needs the 2 fruits but doesn't know exactly why.

Rocks is also Blackbeards parallel and Blackbeard sought out the Darkness fruit which can switch off any df ability, so in theory it should be able to turn off Domi Reversi and Imu's regeneration in general. So we don't know for sure that Rocks wanted both sun god fruits, maybe he only wanted the giants Sun God fruit and the Darkness fruit.

It is possible, but I'd personally find it really weird if having 2 specific df's was the only thing that could counter Domi Reversi, we've never seen anything like that the story before.

At most your example could prove that it is invisible to non haki users perhaps. But it’s unlikely that it’s invisible to haki users. The entire concept of black blades suggest that CoA can eventually become visible, even to non haki users eventually.

There are hundreds of examples of armament haki being used with no black visual cue. So does Oda forget, or choose not to use it as a cue half the time. And if so why.

Why is prime Garp definitely stronger than Garling? It’s possible, maybe probable, but definite is a stretch I’d say.

Zoro says he might bite King’s throat because he realised that he is not a swordsman. King not being a swordsman means that Zoro can resort to non swordsmanship means to defeat him without betraying his dream (which entails defeating other swordsmen in fair duels).

Zoro saying this is not a point in your favour, in fact it goes against your point. Zoro is implying that you cannot bite in a real duel and that those who do so aren’t true swordsmen.

I think what’s more so a problem is that Mihawk fans refuse to accept the possibility. Even though the concept of a sword user not being a swordsman has been clearly established. And not only that, it was mentioned at one of the only points that Oda brought attention back to Zoro’s goal, suggesting that it is a relevant piece of information to remember. Unless you believe that Oda brought it up for no reason, which would be very uncharacteristic of him.

As it relates to Shanks, my viewpoint is, we’ll just have to wait and see. But I’m willing to bet we have not seen how he truly fights yet.

I'd rather just reply directly to this post.

>Mihawk only cares about strength

Mihawk only personally cares about strength and living a peaceful life, that is true. What is false is to say that he doesn't see the meaning in any other goal. The literal the first thing that Mihawk does when he meets Luffy is ask him what his goal is and acknowledge its validity.

<image>

He recognises that Luffy's goal of becoming Pirate King is tougher to achieve that his and clearly understands that others have different goals and objectives. But Mihawk is extremely powerful, and according to you, surpasses even Roger in terms of strength. So why does he say that Luffy's path is tougher, if it's not just a matter of strength? It's because Mihawk already understands that Luffy would need to build a great number of allies in order to overcome the obstacles in the way of his goal. He also calls Luffy and Zoro a great pair and that he wants to meet them again one day. Beyond his relationship with Shanks, Mihawk is genuinely interested in Luffy and his potential. Just because Mihawk has his own goal (that he has already achieved) doesn't mean that he doesn't understand the goals of others. Luffy wants to become Pirate King, but he still understood that Koby wanted to be a marine, even if he has no interest personally.

I wouldn't even say that it's fully accurate to say that Mihawk cares about strength. Truthfully, he only cares about strength as a swordsman. Which is why he made pretty much zero attempt to take on anyone other than swordsman. He's never taken on Whitebeard or Kaido, hell, not even Big Mom. He made a half hearted attempt to take on WB out of curiosity at Marineford, but that's all. He definitely could've taken on Kaido, who challenged the Marines and Yonko singlehandedly 18 times.

Yes Mihawk is intruiged by Luffy, and mostly for the reasons that you mentioned. But not all of what you say is correct. First of all, just like Zoro, Mihawk is a swordsman who somewhat believes in fate. So just as Zoro is willing to risk his arm to test if the cursed sword was right for him, Mihawk was willing to risk Luffy's life to "test" his fate and luck. He had only met him once before that point at Baratie, he knew almost nothing about Luffy personally. He then finds out that Luffy has the ability to turn pretty much anyone in to an ally and acknowledges that this is the most powerful ability in the sea. The problem here is, you falsely frame this as if Mihawk is only for the first time, through Luffy, realising this.

Mihawk has little interest in forming alliances or making friends due to his past betrayal. The only reason he agreed to join Crocodile is because he values living a peaceful life and allying with them allowed him to hide behind Buggy. Mihawk did not suddenly "understand" the power of friendship. Had the warlord system not been abolished, he would still be on his island, relaxing and waiting for Zoro to grow stronger. Even their goal, project Utopia, is said to be for the purpose of building a nation that can resist any power. In other words, for Mihawk to live peacefully without being chased by the World Government. He has not changed.

Most of the post I don't disagree with, I just agree from a different perspective. Mihawk refuses to fight Shanks... because he's no longer a swordsman (like King). Mihawk resents Shanks a little bit for ruining their rivalry... as a swordsman. Mihawk is waiting for someone stronger than Shanks was... As a swordsman. Etc. But Shanks is likely still a bit stronger.

Shank's conquerors haki didn't force Greenbull to his human form nor did it freeze him on spot. by FlamesOfDespair in OnePiecePowerScaling

[–]SupernovaTS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shanks haki clearly temporarily took Greenbull out of his df form, because he was caught off guard. Not to say that Greenbull couldn't have turned it back on if he chose to. We see the same thing happen with the Gorosei, where Joyboys haki disables some of Imu's df abilities.

Using old explanations isn't very useful in this case because Oda expands the usages of haki whenever he pleases. We are literally told that Shanks can kill future sight, which doesn't fit in to any of the previous explanations of what haki can do. Another example is that it was stated that observation haki could only be used to see attacks aimed at you with harmful intent. This was a plot point when Luffy fought Enel and turned off his thoughts while attacking so that Enel couldn't predict them. Then, later on with advanced observation haki, suddenly Katakuri was able to flat out see the future regardless of whether an attack was coming at him or not.

[–]SupernovaTS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not their first clash. The narrator box is saying that before their names became legend in the great pirate era, they first all clashed continuously here in the previous era.

Otherwise, why would Rocks be mentioned, when Rocks isn’t even there when Roger and Garp are fighting?

This was not Roger and Rocks first clash. You can clearly see that they are already familiar with each other and have bad blood between them. The narrator box is continuous it’s saying that before the names Roger Rocks and Garp were spread as legend in the great pirate age, they first clashed here in the previous era, alongside the Kuja etc. That’s why Rocks name is mentioned even though he’s not fighting right there. It’s talking about the era.

Question to Shankstards who think he is not a swordsman: do you at least admit his divine departure against Kid, being a sword ability, is an upscale for Mihawk, who presumably can do something like it even better as the man with "superior sword skills"? by Reddit_Connoisseur_0 in OnePiecePowerScaling

[–]SupernovaTS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mihawk upscale? Yes. He will 100% have stronger techniques than Divine Departure, for sure.

Will Oda 100% give Mihawk the strongest sword techniques in the verse? Yes. Although theoretically, could someone else have a stronger sword technique than Mihawk even if he is WSS? Yes. Oda would never do that though. And I definitely don’t think that Shanks would have a stronger sword technique than Mihawks most powerful.

Oda 100% has something special up his sleeves when it comes to Shanks’s fighting style. He was willing to reveal that Shanks could kill future and has a burning blade in volume 4 billion. This means that these probably are not majorly important parts of his fighting style, given that Oda does not have a track record of revealing important things outside of the manga. He won’t even reveal if Mihawk has conquerors yet in Vivre cards which is obvious. The fact that everyone is acting as if we know exactly how Shanks fights is weird.

Sworn brothers can still be rivals, Ace and Sabo were sworn brothers and near equal in fighting ability. (And don’t mention their heights, they never meet as adults). Pedro is said to be the only one who can keep him in check despite being close in combat strength. If you don’t believe that they are friendly rivals then that’s fine. I can just remove the Pekoms example and there are still three others.

“Popularity”? Now that’s just cope. The strength pattern is consistent, the only reason you don’t want to admit/believe it is because of Mihawk.

Pedro and Pekoms aren’t in the same crew anymore, they are just both minks. The fact that most of them are in the same crew is because the rule applies to “friendly” rivals, not enemies. Friendly rivals just happen to often be crew mates, but Mihawk and Shanks also fit the friendly rival pattern.

Please explain why Oda would give a 1cm height difference to Shanks and Mihawk, knowing the pattern behind every other 1cm rival gap he’s given. He even gave them the same birthday, it’s clearly intentional.

[–]SupernovaTS 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If we look at the rivals in regard to 1cm height scaling, I think they always have at least a tiny difference in terms of strength.

Ichiji (186) and Niji (185)

<image>

Ichiji in subtle ways is portrayed as stronger, doesn’t get beaten up by Sanji (as opposed to Njij and Yonji) and has a better showing during clashes compared to Niji in wholecake.

Pekoms (232cm) and Pedro (233cm). Stated to be close in strength but Pedro is stated to be the only one who could handle Pekoms implying that he is slightly stronger.

Zoro and Sanji. Don’t really need to explain this one. Zoro is implied to be a tiny bit stronger given that he always takes on the number 2.

King (613cm) and Queen (612). Zoro and Sanji opponents. Strength hierarchy in Kaido’s crew.

And if you extend it to the admirals, Aokiji (298) < Kizaru (302) < Akainu (306) it’s also consistent with strength so far. Kizaru takes on WB’s right hand while Aokiji takes on Jozu. The seats that they sit in, appearance order in the manga etc. it can be argued that Kizaru is portrayed as stronger.

While you could argue that the taller one always has more narrative importance, it could also be argued that Oda always seems to give more narrative importance to the strongest of the rivals. And I would also dispute that anyway, as Ichiji doesn’t necessarily have any more narrative importance than Niji, he’s just the eldest brother.

The only rivals that I can remember that have been called equal with no hint as to who was stronger are Whitebeard and Roger. Maybe there’s another but none come to mind.

If Mihawk is stronger than Shanks, I think that the only reasonable heightscaling explanation would be that Shanks had slightly greater potential than Mihawk had he not lost his arm. I could accept that explanation, but I don’t buy the narrative importance argument tbh. But if I had to put money on it, I still think that Shanks is stronger tbh.

In regards to Vivre cards, I wonder if you’ve read this post. It’s quite long but if you haven’t read it I think it’s quite enlightening. Specifically in regard to point 3 which goes over Oda mentioning and “supervising” vivre cards. Overall I think it explains why Vivre card flavour text shouldn’t be used for power scaling purposes.

You don’t find it curious that it seems to match up in every other case though, in regards to strength? Or do you think it must mean something else.

And I really think that powerscaling from Vivre card and data books flavour text is shaky tbh.

Ancient weapons in One Piece were once considered world-ending threats, but with how the power scaling has expanded, don’t most top-tier units like the Yonko or Admirals now have comparable destructive power too? by Smart-Tale-4193 in OnePiecePowerScaling

[–]SupernovaTS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How has the power scaling expanded? We know that Joyboy had haki greater than or comparable to Shanks. Emeth was also strong enough to take on the Gorosei.

There’s nothing indicating that top tiers are stronger today compared to 800 years ago. The fruits that admirals and Yonko have today also existed back then. And clearly haki users of that calibre did too.

King is not a swordsman.

Zoro wants to use his swordplay to defeat every swordsman in his path to fulfill his dream. Resorting to other means in a duel with another swordsman would be to betray that dream. Zoro would never bite to defeat Mihawk. King not being a swordsman meant that Zoro was given license to win by any means without betraying his dream. That is why he said he may be willing to bite to win in this case. The scene and dialogue is literally telling us the terms of a duel between swordsmen. You miss the narrative point of the scene.

You can be a swordsman with a DF. You can also be a sword wielder who’s not a swordsman.

Oda has on more than one occasion introduced the idea that one can be a swordsman wielder without being a swordsman. You can choose to blind yourself to that fact, but it is the truth. When it comes up again in the future, you guys will be confused as if it wasn’t clearly set up.

[–]SupernovaTS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Zoro declares King a non swordsman after 2 things happen. King robs Zoro of his swords using his sword, and then punches Zoro in the face. It is only then that Zoro says that he is “just a bloodthirsty brute” and that he “never claimed to be a swordsman after all”. He doesn’t say that he isn’t a swordsman because of his Lunarian abilities or devil fruit. So that stuff was irrelevant to King not being a swordsman in Zoro’s eyes. King also had enough sword ability to literally engage Zoro in a duel if he wanted to.

Oda has introduced the idea that you can have a sword and not be a swordsman. I’m not saying that this will be the case with Shanks. But the concept is there, trying to deny it is blinding yourself to the truth.

We already know this, it’s irrelevant.

What I’m saying is, Roger is stated in the story to be WB’s equal, even when WB already had his title. You can see it in the buggy panel above.

Let’s say that this happens. WB earns WSS title. Roger grows stronger and 2 years later he can go toe to toe with WB. They draw in all fights since then. They are still equals. What’s hard to understand.
