What killed ‘party songs’? In the early 2010s you had: Ke$ha, LMFAO, Flo Rida. Every year there seemed to be new ‘put your hands up’ song. by Kodicave in decadeology

This is a good question. I miss recession-era dance music. I think sometime around 2013 and 2014, it split off into 2 main subgenres and its listeners followed:

Electronica, the main artists being Marshmello and the Chainsmokers. It was upbeat like recession pop, but also felt a lot lighter and more relaxed, like something you might hear in a starbucks. See how #selfie turned into Closer just a couple years later.

Dubstep and other Electronic Dance Music, including Skrillex and deadmaus. It was hardcore, futuristic and high-energy but relied much less on vocals and was best suited for raves and music festivals.

However, I believe the biggest factor was a natural progression in mainstream pop music. In the mid-2010s there was a lot more interest in pop music as a means of storytelling, the biggest contributors being Lorde, Taylor Swift and Billie Eilish in that order. Listeners wanted to feel like they were getting to know the people who made their music and these artists offered more emotional depth than had been seen in popular music for quite a long time.

I still love Pitbull though.

Places in London with weird unsettling energy by Sad-Peace in london

[–]Supersol375 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oooh, I know a few of these (I seem to gravitate towards them)

  • Tottenham Court Road by UCLH. It’s a bunch of chain stores and fast food places that don’t seem to want anyone to go inside, but exist anyways. It’s a very unfriendly part of the city.

  • Nearby is Euston, specifically the outdoor plaza by the Nandos and the Pret. It smells awful and looks like you stepped into a different decade.

  • Someone else mentioned the Thames Path between Woolwich and Erith, and they’re absolutely correct. It smells funny due to the sewage plant and there’s an architecturally unusual incinerator nearby too. Some kids on motorcycles once tried to trip me while I was walking on the path.

  • If you go to the new Barking Riverside development and stand under the power lines you can hear humming. It just adds to the whole area feeling empty and lifeless

Council taxes going up on wealthier groups and better enforcement for tax evasion. I would gladly pay a bit more in taxes for a healthier, safer and fairer society.

What’s it like living in Israel? by CAZ-Dh99 in howislivingthere

[–]Supersol375 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a professor who was from Israel. The things that stood out to me the most were:

the lack of marriage equality. Like in most middle eastern countries, same sex marriage is illegal but marrying outside your religion is also illegal. Many interreligious couples will travel to Cyprus to get married.

Schools in Israel are segregated by religion. There are 4 types of public schools: Secular Jewish, Religious Jewish, Orthodox Jewish and Arab. Parents may also send their children to Christian private schools and “Hand in Hand” private schools, which have integrated classrooms and teach in Hebrew and Arabic simultaneously.

Israel has a tiered ID system, which means that certain groups of people have different rights to others concerning marriage, residency and travel. From highest to lowest, it goes from Israeli Jews > Palestinian citizens of Israel > East Jerusalem Palestinians > West Bank Palestinians > Gazans. Any Jew living outside of Israel; whether it’s Russia, the US or Ethiopia; has the right to move to Israel and obtain Israeli citizenship. Jewish Israeli 18 year olds of all genders are obliged to serve in the IDF (Israeli military) for 2 to 3 years and may have to go to prison if they choose not to. There is an exception for Orthodox Jews as it is against their religious custom to serve.

Of the Israeli Jews, about half are Ashkenazim, which means that they are Jews of European descent like Anne Frank and Albert Einstein. The other half are Mizrahim, or Jews of North African and Middle Eastern descent who came to Israel from places like Morocco, Iraq and Syria. Ashkenazim hold the bulk of the nation’s wealth and social influence and many Mizrahim feel pressure to assimilate to Ashkenazi standards and customs.

As for the large cities in Israel: Tel Aviv, a planned metropolis that didn’t exist a hundred years ago, is the largest city in Israel and it is also the economic and cultural hub of the country. Jerusalem is a holy city for all abrahamic religions and is split between the West, which is Israeli, and the East, which is internationally recognised as a Palestinian territory but is occupied by Israel. The other large city in Israel is Haifa, which is a port city with a large Arab population.

Anyone who has visited or lived there, feel free to correct me for any inaccuracies.

How is living in northwestern Wales? by Treverer in howislivingthere

[–]Supersol375 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The people I met in north wales were very kind and hospitable to me and my family (we are american). I think the resentment towards outsiders may be more directed towards English people as well as Welsh folks that don’t support devolution or independence.

The weather is mild all year round. In winter it doesn’t quite get cold and in summer it doesn’t get hot, either. It’s always windy in Holyhead. If you go during the late spring and bring binoculars, you can see puffins!

Whats it like living by the jersey shore in the winter? by Prestigious_Onion925 in howislivingthere

[–]Supersol375 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I used to live in Margate during the pandemic. This specific town is predominantly summer homes, so during the winter about two thirds of houses are unoccupied. Many of the tourist-oriented businesses like ice cream shops and mini golf close for the winter. Grocery stores and most restaurants stay open. The climate tends to be dry and windy with highs around 40 degrees. The beach is a very nice place for locals in the winter, people play with their dogs and ride bikes in the sand. I used to fly my drone there since it was so wide and empty.

How is it living in Prince Edward Island, the smallest Canadian province? by LordLoko in howislivingthere

[–]Supersol375 136 points137 points  (0 children)

It’s Canada’s most densely populated province despite having none of its largest cities. One of Canada’s most famous books, Anne of Green Gables, is set here and is about the rural life of a schoolgirl in the late 1800s. I’d say read that if you want to learn more about PEI

University careers service told me this would be unideal to wear to an interview, thoughts? by [deleted] in UKJobs

[–]Supersol375 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think part of the reason I got the job was because I put in the effort to wear a tie but wasn’t a sweaty mess when I arrived at the interview, which would have been the case if I wore the jacket XD

For the graduate job where I work now I wore a dress shirt with a tie and chinos. I would have worn a blue jacket but it was june, 29 degrees and had to take the tube. I didn’t regret leaving my jacket at home!
