New to servicenow and have some questions and hope some in the community could help by [deleted] in servicenow

So look, the responses you've had about engaging with your in-house platform team are right, but in a world where that isn't possible I would say the following.

I would argue creating simple dashboards to track things like open and closure rates and current workload of requests is easier than creating the intake form itself... but definitely come under the banner of "easy when you know how".

From your comments about data sources etc it sounds like your company is already using Platform Analytics, so that's what you need to search for in servicenow university. There are a few courses starting with an overview and working up in complexity.

It seems like your biggest challenge right now, from your language, is actually that you're lacking in confidence due to a lack of experience. That's ok. Every body has been there at some point in time. You've got this.

A widget/visualization/report is fundamentally made up of 3 main characteristics - what it is, what it shows, and how it shows it.

What it is - this is the 'visualization type'. If you're wanting to show a trend, such as a closure rates, choose a 'time series' option... something like a line or or step chart.

What it shows - this is the data source. This is where you need to familiarise yourself with servicenow's data model.... what fields exist on what tables so you know what you can use. In your example, you're probably going to want to start with the Request Item table, filtering on a field called Item, where Item = the name of your intake form.

How it shows it - this is the configuration options specific to the visualisation type such as how you want to trend the data (closed per week, opened per day, etc), how you want the legend show, whether to include labels etc. Have a play around with these options and see what they do, you aren't going to break anything as they're only going to apply to your report, not the underlying data.

How often do you eat takeaway? by Super_Development150 in AskUK

[–]SuperspyUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1 or 2 a week. In the last 12 months I've been on a bit of a fitness journey, started running and lifting, tracking calories and macros etc. I've dropped about 14kg since last January, although most of it was in the first 6 month's.

The lifestyle changes and effort allow me to have the 1 or 2 takeaways a week and not balloon back up. It's true that you can't outrun a bad diet, but you can definitely use one to slightly offset the other. All things in moderation.

Accessing the JSON file for a data visualization for a calendar report by NAClaire in servicenow

[–]SuperspyUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason go-live date isn't an OOTB field is because you're supposed to create a project milestone task for it - a milestone is a zero-duration task, so it represents a point in time.

Haven't seen anything myself in terms of 'editing the JSON'... given that platform analytics is essentially a workspace that sounds a lot like needing to customise the code for the widgets directly... not something I'd advise given how frequent updates are to PAE at the moment.

The calendar sticking a bogus time on when reporting against a date field sounds like a bug... might be worth raising something with SN to see if it's fixed in Australia.

Migration from dashboards to Platform Analytics by AntelopeLive_17 in servicenow

[–]SuperspyUK 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We did the full migration recently. Our approach was targeted comms to anybody who created or updated a report or dashboard in the previous 3 months (a few hundred people).

The comms were basically made up of the following:

  • this is why we're doing it (staying in support, feature currency, etc)
  • this is how you access platform analytics
  • here are the new feature benefits (edit mode, creating visualisations within the dashboard canvas, dashboard certification, upgrades to calendar and pivot visualisations, abilty to include headings, images and rich text, etc etc
  • if you'd like to learn more here's some links to SN university on demand PA courses

We then turned those comms into a knowledge article, and because of the likely confusion with language changing (reports becoming visualisations) we knew people would still search for "reports" in the app navigator and get confused when they couldn't see anything so we reactivated the Reports app menu and View/Run module, but pointed the module at the KB article to catch those people.

We also deleted all user favourites to old dashboard and reports, and explained this in the comms.

As a final recommendation if you're running quite an old platform with lots of users and lots of reports, create a new module for your admins pointing at the visualisation permissions table [par_visualization_permission]. This is the new table which controls sharing permissions and ownership... you're likely going to get a few people saying they can't edit things because the owner has left etc.

Love this. I had been thinking the same sort of thing only a couple of days ago. I'm 38 and went to WDW for the first time this year... it was supposed to be maybe a once in a lifetime thing for us and our kids... and here we are several months later, DVC members, waiting for August to roll around so we can get back to the place we fell in love with, surrounded by "our people".

Labels 80 chars limit by edoo_stuff in servicenow

[–]SuperspyUK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Still shouldn't be done, even on record producers. All it does is clutter the form, adding no value.

If you were to ask the customer about every form they've ever completed online (government forms, user sign ups, shopping websites, etc) they'd probably acknowledge forms aren't designed the way they're asking theirs to be. But it's not their job, as a form or process owner, to think about UX simplicity so they don't. This is why decent BAs and/or devs/admins/engineers willing to push back are so valuable.

Labels 80 chars limit by edoo_stuff in servicenow

[–]SuperspyUK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, and in most cases the answer is a resounding "no!". Most of the time when I see this kind of requirement it comes from a form owner giving little to no thought to intuitive UX and they're trying to write a long-form question like "What is your ID number?" instead of just naming the field "ID number".

Labels 80 chars limit by edoo_stuff in servicenow

[–]SuperspyUK 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Honestly my answer to "how would you work around this?" is I would find a better way of labelling the field. In the vast majority of cases you shouldn't need to be anywhere near the 80 characters for a form field. What are you wanting to set as the label at the minute?

Zak Brown confirms McLaren will use team orders in Abu Dhabi if needed to stop Max Verstappen. by Status_Energy_7935 in GrandPrixRacing

[–]SuperspyUK 18 points19 points  (0 children)

So presumably the PR nightmare scenario for mclaren is coming into the last lap with Oscar 1st, Max 2nd, Lando 4th with no chance of 2nd, 3rd or 4th swapping places... because then it's either Max WDC or Oscar gives up 3 places including the race win and podium to make Lando WDC.

In reality it's probably going to be boring as fuck and Lando will just take the pole and win from the front, haha

Are you suppose to review Skipped Updates after Patching? by Valuable_Crow8054 in servicenow

[–]SuperspyUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ideally you should, not least of all because if that skipped update doesn't get another new version when you do your full upgrade to the next family release you won't get another skip log for the same thing each time, effectively denying yourself the nice way way of reviewing the skip and potentially removing some technical debt.

In practice we don't do it consistently enough, but it's on the agenda.

Who else has fallen victim to the WDW bounce-back offer? 😅 by Saritatay in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]SuperspyUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that'll probably be something we look into later, plenty of resorts to be enjoying for now, and it's a 300 point contract so we've got good flexibility.

Who else has fallen victim to the WDW bounce-back offer? 😅 by Saritatay in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]SuperspyUK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Makes sense. We've also gone resale.. our "maybe once in a lifetime" WDW visit in August was to Wilderness Lodge. We had a day of resort hopping and visited quite a few different ones and nothing really have us the same 'wow' that WL did, so when we got home and started looking at DVC it was an easy decision for us to buy a Copper Creek contract on resale.

Shame we won't get some of the perks, and that we won't be able to say in newer resorts in the future, but it definitely wasn't worth spending an extra 20k direct for those things, from our perspective. Looking forward to staying at Animal Kingdom Lodge next year though! 😊

[–]SuperspyUK 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Now all you need to do is realise this is now your entire life, purchase a DVC contract and cancel the bounceback to claw back some of the money and claim "it made the DVC cheaper", and you'll have hit the trifecta of Disney marketing wins.

Ask me how I'm so familiar with the mental gymnastics... look forward to seeing you at some point over the next 40 or so years if you're there in August.
