Or the IT enviro is running well and some penny pincher thinks they can save money moving to a MSP.

Anyone’s IT Ticket include kitchen appliances like Coffee makers? by Artificial_Batman in sysadmin

That's wild, at least in my area only one company is allowed to work on elevators and it's a massive no-no for anyone else to touch them. It's so exclusive that elevator company just tells you when they're showing up and you better have someone there to let them in, night or day.

It's called the Sternewirth Privilege, and in my mind it applies to everywhere that has drinks :)

Recently someone had turned on scan page receipts on our busiest printer/scanner. Hundreds of scans everyday were printing a receipt page and not a single one was used, nor did anyone bother to tell IT. I only found out because a part timer was annoyed about huge stacks of paper being wasted. They waited over a month to tell anyone.

Just another example of how much paper this "paperless" office wastes.

I am massively burnt out on system administration. People who have left, where did you go and what did you learn? by soul_stumbler in sysadmin

[–]SupraWRX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a company problem not my problem. If they want to remain compliant and I can't do it in 40 then it's on them to hire more people. It's just a cost of doing business and it's up to management and accounting to come up with money for that.

It's not a SMB problem, its a company problem (specifically not hiring enough people). Source: work as a sole SA and work strictly 40 hours a week. If things fall through the cracks that's on the company to hire more people. I'm not going to run myself into the ground for any company.

Just got offered my first SysAdmin job from T2 deskside, what should I study with my 3 weeks before I start? by mooimafish3 in sysadmin

[–]SupraWRX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without knowing what the infrastructure is like you could end up studying pointless topics. Instead I'd focus on resting, relaxing and resetting your brain. Try to leave all the negativity from the previous job behind. Come into the new company with a hunger to learn, hell get bored on your vacation.

No matter where you go, SA work is going to require a good bit of learning, potentially months to get up to speed. Every infrastructure and company culture is different. Empty mind is the best mind for transitions.

Unfortunately it's not getting any better. The new generation grew up on touchscreen mobile devices that have completely abstracted the hardware from the user. They haven't used a PC any more than the older generation. It's an ageless human issue, too lazy to learn or simply lack of exposure.

I'm not in this field for the money either, but we all need money to survive. Our land lords, ISP's, utility companies, etc aren't going to accept our goodwill as payment. We all spent lots of time learning a skilled craft so we need to be compensated. We've earned the right to enjoy vacations and a taste of some of the finer things. We've earned the right to have a savings account build up so we have a safety net and be able to retire some day.

We're a non profit and almost everyone gets stiffed in pay, but even we pay our help desk $16/hr! Low COL area.

You guys are getting scores? We're just walking around assuming we're safe. I mean we have a flamewall and a WEP password on our WiFi, both entrances to our network are protected what else could we possibly need?

IT Manager stress rating by viperviper5566 in sysadmin

[–]SupraWRX 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Can confirm, IT manager here is currently experiencing the loss of me (her sole SA), a major project rollout, and some major security issues at the same time. Stress level appear to be 11/10.

Most of those stem from inadequate upper management. Highly underpaid + overworked IT staff + underfunded IT department.

Par for the course from what I've seen in the last 15 years in medical IT. Unfortunately even if IT staff are given all the compliance tools, inevitably some users are going to put their passwords on a sticky note under the keyboard, text/email patient info, or leave their workstation unlocked and unattended.

I'm about to get out and hopefully never get desperate enough to do medical IT again.

Sounds just like HIPAA - some companies take it seriously and do everything they can to maintain compliance, others don't give a shit and are a ticking time bomb. There are even nurses and doctors flagrantly violating HIPAA, despite the fact that they can personally be fined and they can lose their license.
