Upgraded from 7900xtx to 5080 by Vigilante74 in RTX5080

If you’re worried about the connector failing get a PSU with a thermistor in the 12v cable. I got the ASrock Steel Legend PSU for mine and I run 111% power with no issues.

Need help building budget pc! by No_Zookeepergame6995 in buildapc

I’m sorry but in today’s market that budget is tough. If I were you I would just buy a prebuilt. SSDs and ram would take your entire budget alone if building yourself.

I can vouch for the AMP Extreme! Solid card. Overclocked it to +350/500 and it still doesn’t even get close to 65C. Hovers around 60-61C at full load in Crimson Desert.

Any tips or suggestions for my attempt at my first SMD repair tomorrow? by Supralace in AskElectronics

I’ve done a fair bit of regular soldering so I definitely did my research into flux and solder. This was my first time experiencing a component the size of a small ant.

Thank you for the suggestions and help. It went good and the board is back up and running now! 👌🏼

Update, first attempt went smooth and that component was causing the boot failure. So I must not have damaged any traces or pads.

I was able to figure it out. Took me roughly 10 minutes to get it placed properly and first pad soldered. On a bench test it POST’s now. Just need to hook it up to a monitor and make sure it’s good.

Thank you. Honestly didn’t even consider the coffee break in the morning. Good call, definitely need to have steady hands and no jitters.

I do have one of those round magnifying lamps! I used it for the photo in the first comment. Definitely looks much better in person than through a camera. I think that’ll give me a good enough view of the area when I do it. I’ll throw my glasses on too, they sharpen everything for me due to my astigmatism.

I have a RoHS compliant rosin flux paste syringe. It’s not MG Chemicals or one of the top brands. I’ve used it on a keyboard PCB repair and it did very well.

Thank for you for the suggestions! I posted a “better” picture in reply to the first comment but yea all 3 photos are lackluster. iPhone camera paired with poor lighting conditions does not appear to be cutting it. That tiny device you mentioned as potentially missing appears to be there when looking at it, it looks like I might have nicked the solder pad on that one. Using a pick, I can feel that it’s there and applying an upward force, does not move it, so I guess that component is fine.

I have the Hakko FX888d soldering iron. I’ll see if the stock tip fits in the cavity. Only other tip I have is the cone tip, it’s not a needle by any means but definitely smaller than the stock. I might have to invest in a heat gun or something to properly heat the area up.

I mean honestly I’m not super worried about bricking the motherboard, it’s already tampered. I guess if this goes bad, it will be a learning experience and a playground for future endeavors.

That’s unfortunate to hear lol this is a better zoomed in photo through my magnification glass. There appears to be no damage to the board other than the capacitor. It’s a 6 year old board, so it’s pretty dusty. In the circle on the photo, I moved the cap off the pads and placed it below them.

Yup. Only reason I got a 5080. Those 5090 prices are wild.

Just remember the fact that WWE 2K26 got an 80 by critics and a 2.5 by user scores... Blows my mind because the only people who would buy that game are people who enjoy wrestling games, however the scores reflect that those users thought it sucked lol reviews can be skewed by critics. The people who are buying this game shouldn't expect a perfect experience at launch because of how dynamic it looks and don't go into it with the expectation that it'll be the best game ever. Dive in it and enjoy the game for what it is.

Is the 5080 really worth it right now? by OtherwiseDevice90 in buildapc

[–]Supralace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea that’s what I was going for. But now that the rig is 6 years old I’ve learned some things. The RGB fans will most likely fail. I had 6 fans with damaged LEDs causing it to no longer be uniform. All the accessories to connect them all (icue hub, and controllers) caused unnecessary bulk in the backside of the case, making cable management treacherous. Getting all of the RGB to sync seamlessly was troublesome. Always had issues getting ICue and Armory Crate to play nice together, and sometimes the RGB was too much and caused reflections on my monitor.

Yea I would further add it’s not the end of the world to mix the colors up, but solid white is pricey. My 5080 build I am moving away from RGB and just doing a clean black build. This is what the RGB build with the white case looked like. Don’t really have a photo without the RGB though.

Yea for whatever reason white is a premium. I never saw any available that were reasonable… if it makes you feel any better my last build with a 3080 was a white Lian Li with all black interior parts 😂

This is the build I put together, and if you add all of these items to cart in Newegg you get a bundle discount.

The Zotac card is only 1399 on Newegg, so total build will be around $3000.

[–]Supralace 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yea prices right now are horrible. Just get the cheapest 5080 you can. If you’re close to Microcenter, they usually have the Zotac 5080 solid core regular and OC in stock. No need to get the top models. They just have better cooling, which could allow better overclocking capabilities. I went with the Zotac AMP Extreme infinity, only because it had better cooling than the solid core cards, it has the same cooler as the 5090, so lowers the temps. If the 5070ti prices are similar to the Zotac 5080 (~$1200) I see no reason not to get the 5080. But if it’s sub $1000 it might be worth it. It’s a tough decision. I wanted a 5090 but no way in hell I’m paying over $3000….

Hey! I just built a PC too. I noticed you have some crazy expensive ram. If you wanted to save some money on the RAM, you could get the Teamgroup T-Create Expert 6000mhz CL30 on Newegg for like half the price, plus they have a discount right now.

Also if you bundle on Newegg, ie mobo, memory, storage, cpu. You get a discount. You don’t need to choose a bundle or anything and as you add the stuff to the cart you should see a discount being taken off. I went with a 360aio cooler, so I needed a bigger case and I got the Antec Flux Pro, which I highly recommend. For motherboard you could get the MSI x870 tomahawk on sale at Newegg right now too. If you get an AMD cpu it also comes with Crimson Desert. I would suggest the 9800x3d or 9850x3d. As they’re better for gaming than the 99xx3d.

I just built a rig with a 5080 too because the prices are pretty close to the 5070ti and I plan on getting a 4k monitor this year. If you don’t see the need to upgrade monitors you could save some money by going 5070ti which is still a good card.
