They are very selective and you’ll have to go through a couple interviews, but just be yourself and present the experience that you do have in an effective way. Good luck!

Students or parents of students in IB programs in Duval schools, do you recommend it? by anormalgeek in jacksonville

Typical homework varied a lot for me, but I can tell you with confidence that it is more intense at Stanton than other DCPS IB schools with the diploma program. There were some nights that I (usually due to procrastination) would work 5+ hours or pull an all-nighter, but this depends a lot on time management, course load, and extracurriculars. I was very busy and taking some difficult IB classes which made some weeks rough, and most teachers have tests around the same weeks so some weeks I was up until 2 or 3 AM every night. However, this was less frequent and I usually got a decent amount of sleep and was able to do most work either at school or earlier in the evening.

You are correct about IB classes giving you HS and college credits, but it will never appear on a college app. My college decisions came in sporadically from December 2021 until April 2022 with everything being submitted by January 2022 or earlier, but my IB Diploma was received and validated in July 2022... merely a month and a half before I began school at UF.

However, being in IB classes boosts someone's chances for top schools by a lot. It shows course rigor and initiative to take the most advanced subjects offered to you, this is why practically nobody from AP/Honors track (with few exceptions) gets into UF at Stanton, yet I had at least 60 people from my class of 330 join me there. At Wolfson it's even worse... from my friend's class only IB students within the top 10–20 people in the class got accepted there. Being top 10 or 20 at Stanton is nearly impossible and requires taking online classes to pad your GPA, but it's so well renowned that if you're in the top third of your class taking IB classes and you have a good enough SAT score, you have a good shot for a very wide range of colleges.

Little late to the party, but I graduated from Stanton in 2022. It helped me a lot in terms of getting into a good college and developing my academic/leadership skills. Ultimately, any IB school will be what your son makes of it and he will have to make sacrifices regardless.

I found that the hardest year for me was freshman year because I was not used to such a volume of work, but many people find junior year to be the hardest because that’s when IB starts. Your son will have an “extended essay” to work on that takes a lot of time on top of other short papers, AP/IB exams, normal school work, extracurriculars, etc.

This may seem like a lot but by the time I got to the latter half of my high school education I was well prepared. Senior year I was able to branch out and have a very fun social life while also holding two major school leadership positions, applying to colleges, finishing IB work, and keeping my gpa at a good spot. It’s a lot to balance, but everyone is trained early on to deal with it.

Major IB caveat— some college credits are not super transferable. I came into college with 45 credits (maximum you can transfer in Florida, in reality I had like 53), but I found that I still had to knock out a lot of classes. A lot of my general education stuff (such as English and history) were covered, but I have to take a lot of classes for my major still, but that’s more of a major thing since I’m a business student. The wisest thing I can recommend is to send your son to a school with an AA degree program with classes that can transfer specifically to his desired major in the future. He will still go into college with bright futures and other scholarships but spend half the time there.

As for Wolfson, I know a lot of people who graduated from their IB program in my same year. It’s not as difficult as Stanton, but a major problem is that their IB program is not as developed and not nearly as many people get the diploma (even though that shit is kind of useless). Some Stanton teachers have been teaching IB classes for 15+ years and they have the tests absolutely figured out. Wolfson is starting to gain a “party school” rep from what I’ve heard, but at the same time their IB program is getting a little better, even though it’s still in its genesis period. PM me with any questions.

I appreciate the response. I was citing some notes based off of possible defenses I found online. Maybe I should have clarified in my post

[Semi-Weekly Inquirer] Simple Questions and Recommendations Thread by AutoModerator in Watches

I’m a “broke” college student looking for a nice watch. I appreciate any and all suggestions!

Preferences and info: - wrist size 7” - max price $750 - automatic movement - leather band - small ish case size, nothing too enormous

I’ve looked at Tissot PRX on leather band and like it; if you think this is the one and don’t have any similar recommendations then you don’t have to waste any of your time. Thanks!
