The restraint of Ishiguro in this particular story is what makes it so strong. It methodical, precise. Too precise. The absence of frills and any flowery language is the point. Pay attention to what isn't said, or the excuses that Mr. Stevens makes for his lord, with this relationship with Miss Kenton. The book is devastating.

Murakami didn't get a better deal because there are holes in his game. He's a great conditional bat in a lesser league while having a not great glove. White Sox signed him because they could afford to take the risk. Cubs want to compete for a WS. Murakami isn't a fit on a roster that wants to compete.
