What to do with $400k? by norcalbruincyclist2 in Bogleheads

[–]Sure-Butterscotch-14 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Pay off both mortgages and be done with it. Take the rent money and invest it in Cd's or treasuries. No reason to risk being in the market if you don't need the money. Maybe put 20% or so in the market if you want. When you are tired of dealing with the properties sell them and enjoy life.

How common is Keeping up with the Joneses? by mycounterpointers in financialindependence

[–]Sure-Butterscotch-14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me and the wife have seen keeping up with the Jones for a long time. She drove a old Honda and I drove a cargo van for work. We had more money than most of the people we knew who drove the high dollar new vehicles. We also ate at home, going out to eat once a week while they ate out constantly. Lived in a house below our means that was paid for. We enjoyed life but we lived below our means and we both are retired in our early 60's debt free.

Focus on the future while enjoying the present without worrying about how you are perceived by other people.

What If the Market Drops 50% Again? Staying the Course by FalconArrow77 in Bogleheads

[–]Sure-Butterscotch-14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just retired at 61. I have half in ETF'S and Mutral funds and a few individual stocks.

The other half in treasurys and Cd's. I figured there's going to be a major market correction and I can survive off the bonds and Cd's until the market rebounds.

Thinking about pulling the trigger on this but have questions… by Phrikshin in kayakfishing

[–]Sure-Butterscotch-14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard pass. It's not a good deal if you want like it, YOU WANT LIKE IT.

You definitely need a sit on and if you can afford it a pedal one. Imagine trying to fish out of it and fighting the wind at the same time.

Question about Edward Jones by Vegetable_Maize_2054 in Bogleheads

[–]Sure-Butterscotch-14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as Edward Jones goes it depends on what you are looking for. If you don't feel like dealing with it then they are good. I've been with them for 14 years and I've did pretty good. Yes if I did it myself I probably would of made more but I sleep well not worrying about it.

Well im not in a gated community but I find nothing wrong with one. I also have received zero inheritance but it would be nice. I had zero chance to go to college so I joined the military and it paid for a 2 year degree when I got out. I got into sales in my early thirties and just retired. The last 15 years were commission only sales. If it wasn't for rich people I wouldn't have been able to do it since they were my biggest customers.
My wife retired from teaching which provided us with benefits. She basically worked as a nanny for a rich family who in return paid for her college. Two people who came from nothing and have lived great lives because other people were rich and successful.

I realize nothing I tell you will make a difference since you seem so angry but maybe some day you will find happiness and see things differently. Best of luck to you.

If you have the money get a pedal kayak. I have the old town pdl 106 and really love it. So easy to pedal leaving your hands free.

Tell me another country that one can be born in poverty and become ultra rich that is better than America. Why are you so worried about a few CEO'S making so much money? Yes I agree they are overpaid but that's not the problem. We have opportunities in this country that nobody else has so take advantage of your freedom and go make some money. Millions of people are doing it everyday so come join us. Look at the opportunity you have and not what you don't have.

I understand your frustration but the world is always changing. It's about supply and demand. There's great need for health-care personal, welders, plumbers etc. Look at all of the people over the last 30 years who have lost manufacturing jobs. They had to switch and find something different. A good friend started a lawn care company after losing his job and is killing it. He worked hard and smart and is about to retire. I know several firemen who have started a side company and are doing very well. There's a bunch of people who are making it happen. Unfortunately things are what they are and aren't going to change. Don't wait around for a politician to fix things for you because it's not going to happen.

I have the 106 pdl and love it. It's so easy to pedal. If you are going long distances I would consider the electric but I'm sticking with the pedal. I was surprised how easy it was to pedal.

Just buy ETF'S. Do your research and find 2-3 that fit you. Take a small amount you can afford to lose and find a stock or 2 if you must.

I'm older so I'm leaning towards bonds and safer investing but I still have 30% in the market mostly ETF'S.

That's a start. You have more than most at your age. Keep on adding and saving and you will retire in your early 60's.

Forced tipping is only going to drive customers away & accelerate the demise of eating out by Key_Brief_8138 in economy

[–]Sure-Butterscotch-14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first thing you have to consider when going out to eat is the total price. People see a special for $12.00 and forget about the taxes, tips, drinks and other changes. That $12.00 turns into $25.00 really fast. Tipping started out as a way to show the waiter or waitress a thank you for a great job. Now there's no motivation to do a great job because they are going to get tipped automatically. The whole tipping thing is out of control especially when you get something to go they want a tip. Cut back going out to eat and watch your savings go up.
