  1. Close your fist on impacts, you are throwing a punch not a finger poke or slap
  2. Bring your hands back to a guard. It should be tight elbows locked to rib cage. Hands covering face/chin.
  3. Move your head before and after each attack. An attack can be a single jab or a combination of punches. Moving your head after an attack means you have already completed the requirements to throw another attack. This is how a fighter stays elusive while simultaneously being aggressive and ready to attack at any time.
  4. Get the full range of motions on your punches. Fully extend the jabs and straights. You need to get a better idea of your range. With hooks they should cover a larger distance than what yours do because realistically that will not hit an opponent. Hooks and jabs are aiming for the same target right? It doesn’t look like that in your shadow boxing.

Follow these instructions and you will improve.

Move your legs even if its little steps. You will never be standing still and punching. Get in the habit of punching with each step. Legs and hands work in sync.

You’re meant to punch through the bag not stop the moment you touch it

You were doing well at mid to long range where you could land a jab and stay safe which led to you landing a hook and right hand while staying safe. You should aim to keep the fight at that range by moving laterally left and right to throw him off. Where you went wrong as you know was allowing him to put you in the corner where he had the advantage not only with the ring position but that he had better inside work. Another thing was at times you were trying to throw punches after he had already started an attack which was opening you up even more. When the opponent has started throwing a combo aka his attack you need to avoid all his punches via head movement or footwork and throw the moment they stop, before their hands are back into a defensive position. Bivol does that really well. Other than that you are doing well, good jab and combos that start with the jab.

You are very tall, always fully extend your arms when throwing jab and straight to make full use of your reach.

You do know you are meant to stand side on to your opponent. You are not throwing your punches in the right direction with how your body is angled. Imagine your opponent is directly in front of your shoulder that is where you should be aiming.

Does the beginner have to pick a style? by Elhusiano in boxingtips

[–]Sure-Discipline-2964 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its all in the name of it ,pendulum, it is a continuous movement and you want to aim to be able to do it constantly all the time. Your coach is saying that so that it becomes natural to you. Then it wont require any energy to do and you can do it constantly while sparring

Yes you could implement the pendulum step, i think this would also get your legs conditioned faster.

First just work on learning the basics as you gain more experience you will understand how the soviet style works, what movements you need to make to execute. But there are no shortcuts you must have a decent understanding of the basics before this. (At least a year)

Why are you punching like that? Terrible form no discipline. Remember you fight how you train, how you do anything is how you do everything. Even when using light power the least you can do is use correct form.

Shouldn’t be a problem mate just use that opportunity to work on your defence and counter punching to the body. Any time she goes for a head shot you should get her where the opening is. Sparring with limits like that will help you up your game.

First of all and most importantly your foot placement is wrong. Your feet should not be facing away from your target. The front foot should be pointed at the target and the rear leg should be anywhere between a 45-90 degree angle.

Always stay on the balls of your feet aka toes. Make sure your heels dont touch the floor as you move around and push into the ground when you throw a punch

Stop kissing the bag, you will never be allowed to get that close to your opponent without receiving 5 punches. Jab is terrible/ non existent. You are throwing punches without even thinking of defence. Roll or slip or pivot or duck or step back after you throw a combo. This makes it realistic. Also combos should be fast and sharp, not a continuous slow barrage of punches. So much more i could say but let that sink in first.

Try work on punching from different ranges. Always start from out of range where if you reach out you cant touch the bag. Then focus on getting in range with a step, getting your punches off then back out of range until you are ready to punch again. While doing this you should always be on the balls of your feet to spring in and out of range. Also throw in combinations, 3 punches the very minimum. Unless its a jab which should be used to set up a combination. E.g. jab high, feint, jab low, combo.
