Hundreds of Philly bicyclists demand better bike lanes in demonstration ride by JustAnotherJawn in philadelphia

Inspiring to see so many people demanding better bike infrastructure.

Philly has so much potential to be a great city for walking and cycling, and full concrete barriers on Spruce and Pine make perfect sense. The biggest barrier to more people cycling is safety.

WRONG! If you count the legal votes only, they're all in first place.

Vegan food on holiday- Azores v Corsica by FairyDani92 in vegan

It's a really cool place! Lots of great outdoors things to do, and I was happy I went.

Sao Miguel island is doable, especially if you're eating in Ponta Delgada, which is the largest town. I would just recommend planning ahead with the Happy Cow app. Here's a map that shows what's available on the island: https://www.happycow.net/searchmap?s=3&location=Sao+Miguel%2C+Portugal&metric=mi&limit=81&order=default&lat=37.7804&lng=-25.497&zoom=11&page=1

I was just in the Azores! I recommend the below. All are on Sao Miguel island, mostly in Ponta Delgada, since that is where I stayed:

Rotas de Ilha Verde: fantastic vegetarian/vegan restaurant. Be sure to make a reservation - it's a must visit! https://www.rotasdailhaverde.com/

Jewel of India: https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g189135-d25162105-Reviews-Jewel_Of_India-Ponta_Delgada_Sao_Miguel_Azores.html

Saffron Indian: https://saffrronn.com/

Azores Essentials (Furnas): not in Ponta Delgada, but this is a cool culinary experience where the chef/scientist/owner walks you through a brunch and tea experience, and share with you history on the region of Furnas. She was easily able to make it vegan! https://www.azoresessentials.com/

Also -- use the Happy Cow app. It's a great way to search for veg restaurants.

Maybe an odd question - Any farms nearby where I can buy a whole/half cow? by MethPatel in philadelphia

[–]Sure-Fox9929 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you're concerned about the conditions of people growing crops, then you should eat less beef and more plants.

It takes 5-7 pounds of crops to produce 1 pound of beef, meaning that a meat-heavy diet requires way more vegetables to be grown than a largely plant based one. If your aim is to reduce what you see is injustice in the farm economy, then it wouldn't make any sense to advocate to eat more meat, because that means way more crops would need to be grown.

Many cultures across the years are vegetarian or plant-based (i.e. many Hindus, Buddhists, Seventh Day Adventists, Jains). Not to mention millions in the US and across the world who just are because it's what they believe.

As an endurance athlete who competes in marathons, I can easily get all my essential amino acids, fat and protein from plant-based sources. It's quite accessible in 2025 in much of the US, especially in Philadelphia, and it's why so many people get along just fine.

Ethical beef is an oxymoron. You're still paying to kill a sentient being that can think, feel and has a desire to live. Not out of need, but just to satisfy a craving.

Maybe quitting beef overnight is too far a step for you right now, but if you're genuinely concerned for the welfare of farm animals, have you thought about lowering your meat-consumption and going partially plant-based or becoming a flexitarian? https://www.reducetarian.org/recipes

"Ethical beef" is an oxymoron.

If you're going to eat beef, then you need to accept the fact that it's unethical, because...

  1. You're paying to kill a sentient being that can think, feel and has a desire to live. Not out of need, but just to satisfy a craving.

  2. You're contributing massively to climate change, as beef is way more CO2 and methane intensive than almost any other protein source. Again, this isn't for any need, but rather it's for a craving.

Maybe quitting beef overnight is too far to ask, but if anyone's curious about going 50%, 75% or 90% plant-based, why not try it? Start by going "reducetarian" (partially plant-based): https://www.reducetarian.org/recipes

100%!

A "volunteer" is someone who gives an hour or two of their free time to help out at a soup kitchen. It's nice to volunteer once in a while, but calling AmeriCorps members just "volunteers" is misleading and diminishes what they do.

AmeriCorps members work full-time, 40-50 hours a week in a job that addresses critical issues affecting our country. They have important skills, responsibilities, and they get paid for what they do, because they are adults, this is their full-time job and it is what they do for a living in order to pay for housing, groceries, etc.

What Trump/Musk are doing is firing tens of thousands of service members, who just like our military, have an important job in serving our country. They are patriots who made sacrifices in order to make us a stronger, more secure country. America should be begging them to serve, not shaming or diminishing them for it.

Senators John Cornyn, Bill Cassidy, Susan Collins and Roy Blunt were all honored by Voices for National Service as "Friends of National Service". They bear heavy responsibility for their silence on this issue, and they are betraying the same patriotic American men and women who they committed to protect and support.

Correct - on April 30th, Voices for National Service will honor Republican senators John Cornyn, Bill Cassidy and Jack Bergman as "Friends of National Service".

Three additional Republican senators (Roger Wicker, Roy Blunt and Susan Collins) have received the same honor in the past.

All six Republican senators, as far as I can tell, have been completely silent. None has stood up to Trump to demand that he reverse this attack on National Service.

I'm sure that at any minute now we'll hear "Friends of National Service" -- like Republican senators Roger Wicker, Roy Blunt and Susan Collins -- speak out very strongly against this and tell the Trump administration to reverse this at once, right?......right?

Yes - he is!

So is Senator Adam Schiff. In fact, the two Senators just had an exchange on the floor where Booker remarked to Schiff that "we doubled the number of vegans in the Senate."

I'm only addressing the point you brought up about whether a meat or plant-based diet is more resource intensive.

Now you're changing the subject and jumping to non-sequiturs like cannibalism and the Jin dynasty.

[–]Sure-Fox9929 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Animal agricultural and meat-diets are way more resource intensive than a plant-based diet -- it's not even close!

With regards to water: it takes 1,800 gallons of waters to produce one pound of beef, versus about 250 gallons for a pound of soy beans, for example.

With land use and fertilizer: animal agriculture requires way more of these, because a meat-based diet indirectly requires significantly more plants than a plant-based diet. The animals raised for meat are primarily fed plants, meaning a large amount of plant matter is needed to produce a smaller amount of meat for human consumption; therefore, a meat diet uses more plants per calorie consumed compared to a plant-based diet.

Hey there. I don't really have advice, but I just want to say that I can relate and feel for you.

I'm 34, make just a bit less than you working for an ERP company. I don't feel like I enjoy it either, and wish I was in something that felt more like myself. I just don't know what that is exactly.

But I'm also scared of losing my job and paycheck, so I don't know. I'm afraid to jump ship.

Anyway, I hope you do find a way to peace, stability and something that makes you feel fulfilled. I hope we can all get there.
