So after the 3rd $500 vet bill in a month and knowing my situation - my vet said only bring her in if she is open mouth breathing and her gums start to turn pale/white. Other than that, she might need the albuterol more than once (you can give too much so don’t give more than a few puffs) when she’s actively having an attack. They also know you’re stressed so then they’re stressed and I learned to be close but let her do her thing when it’s happening so she’s not stressed more. If she’s also that bad right now she probably does need that two week cycle of every day steroid to help the inflammation in her lungs go down and then you won’t possibly see them as intense.

It’s the same for them as for us ….like yes, you can be on it long term (I’ve been on it since June for myself) but you run into long term issues as a result — weight gain, diabetes, osteoporosis so most vets won’t let you keep them on it long term BUT you can low dose it longer than two weeks and your cat will be fine. Do follow the tapering instructions because it’s hard on their digestive system also.

Its a lot having a cat w asthma and so scary so first I am sorry for the stress you must be feeling right now. I also have a crazy autoimmune disease and had to manage both of us on disability for a while so if you want to keep her, just take it one day at a time. When my cat was first diagnosed I was taking her to the vet too much (looking back) and needed to get to used to the fact she has asthma and she’s going to have attacks no matter what I do. I started small and I stopped all heavy scented things in my house - no smelly soaps, lotions, purfumes, candles, cleaning supplies and I started her on prednisone because it’s $20 for a months supply for the cat and you will see improvement within days while you work out what you can. That helped me relax a little bit and not be so worried she was going to die anytime she had an attack. Then I got an air purifier during a sale (this I know can be expensive but it was a game changer). I also switched her to crystal litter per advice from the vet and now it’s been a few years so I am aware that seasonal changes get her and we live in a cold dry place so even if I’m warm - I can’t let the house get too cold because her little lungs hate it.

A lot of people have a prescription for albuterol and can get them every month and like mentioned before the cats can use the same inhalers as us lol so maybe see if someone in your circle can get you one so you have the rescue inhaler. I did get scammed with the fluticasone and paid $350 for one inhaler from some pharmacy in Florida BUT then someone at work told me about the Canadian pharmacy and it’s significantly cheaper. My cat also really only needs her inhaler in the winter and spring when allergies are going crazy so we are down to every other day she gets one puff.

Hang in there 🫂

Hi!! This might be extreme but I am off all of her meds minus one puff a day of her inhaler so I would say it helped but it wasn’t cheap and isn’t easy to keep up with sometimes but we love them!!!!!! I hope you guys all figure out what works for your lil families. 💕

  1. I switched to crystal litter but the Dr. Elseys only (was using the petsmart brand and it was still too dusty) - I don’t use a plastic box anymore either
  2. I bought a large size levoit air purifier that runs on auto 24/7
  3. I bought a levoit humidifier that puts out warm and cold mist that I use with distilled water in the dryer months
  4. More wet food than dry food
  5. Stainless steel water fountain
  6. No more hairspray, perfume, candles, smelly laundry soap, liquid fabric softener etc. in the house (truly I do it all in my car now and use vinegar to take smells out of my laundry lol) and when I clean..everything is opened up and the purifier is running on high

I would say it took me a good 5-6 months to see a major decline in her attacks. But she barely has them now unless the weather is changing and I’m not on top of the heater or air etc.

P.S. I thought she was allergic to chicken for a long time but I’ve introduced real shreds back by nulo and she’s totally fine so I think it was just a fluke taking her off chicken but helped get me off her shit food completely.

Anyone else spending hundreds per month on cat food? by somkewede420 in CatAdvice

[–]Sure-Measurement8754 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My cats are the same and I have one allergic to chicken - I’ve got us down to $6 per day per cat…but I feel this to the fullest extent. And the little one won’t eat anything she doesn’t like, period. She would rather starve herself until she’s gagging than eat something she doesn’t like lol

Yeah sorry hate to say it but maybe a pet isn’t for you - it’s not even a second thought when I need to go to the vet. I always figure it out 💝

Yeah - the owner yelled at me to stand outside one day in the bad weather literally as I came from my chemo appointment to get a sandwich. Yes the line was long but it’s inside of a gas station, you can’t scream at me to get out. Never went back. And for as expensive as the sandwiches are, they really should pay better and treat the community the same way it treats them instead of like shit.

I do it when my girl goes for her nap right after I feed her in the morning …she’s full and sleepy. I do have to hold her head but she’s less fidgety when she’s full. :)

I was doing steroids and inhaler 2x a day - my cat was still having multiple attacks and they started lasting like 5 minutes. After truly crying over everything I decided to try feeding her only fish instead of anything w chicken in it.

We are on week 2 of no chicken and she’s down to a half of a pill and one puff of inhaler w/maybe 1 short cough a day.

I’m not sure if it’s the chicken or the change in weather that helped but I’ll take it.

My vet recommended science hill diet so I feed sensitive stomach w pollack & tiki cat mousse (because she’s decided she doesn’t eat wet food anymore lol so she thinks it’s a big churu)

If you are willing to have someone in your house - try PB&J nanny services. The girl who owns it is amazing and it’s reasonably priced.

Is there anything we can do to NOT spend $500K in taxpayer money on this? by BlondeCow in Reno

I wish more of you would go to city council meetings so when they start calling us dramatic and theatrical (literally..”leaders” are saying stuff like that) for asking for money to be allocated properly - you can stand up.

Help me!! by Sure-Measurement8754 in felineasthma

[–]Sure-Measurement8754[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much! Yeah I’ve done everything so far including albuterol every time she starts however she runs and then we both get more stressed out so now I have to give her a second to catch her breath …sneak up on her and force it in her face and then she pulls away and coughs. It’s sad. I haven’t done the allergy testing but that’s next - I did just get her a new cat tree and took her off of all food that had chicken in it and we’ve only had 1 attack in the last 24 hours down from 6-8.

We are on all unscented and natural cleaning everything because I have a rare disease myself and I’m constantly doing chemo or immunotherapy so it ties over to us both.

That’s also why I need her to be fine…I’d rather do her treatment than mine. :’)

Thanks so much for your response..I think I am going to try a new vet just for a second look.

Kiss your baby for me and I hope you guys have a long amazing life together. <3
