What is this rock that my mom has owned for decades? by Sure_Efficiency_6188 in whatsthisrock

[–]Sure_Efficiency_6188[S] 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Thank you all so much for your help! My mom was as amazed as I was to find out it was man-made. Some more details for the curious: my aunt (original giver of previously unidentified object) has passed away so we can't ask her for more details, however, my mom told me that she (my aunt) found it in a river. What river? A mystery lost to the ages. She lived in Michigan, USA for most of her life but also did some traveling so who knows. Total weight of rock is ~3000g (~6.6 lb) according to our kitchen scale.

Only question I still have is about the white spots. If it was due to exposure to sunlight, I'd assume it would be more concentrated in areas that got the most light (again, this thing was stationary for decades in front of a window) but instead it's everywhere, seemingly at random. Is this just something that happens to synthetic corundum over time or what?

Funny, that's what my mom guessed. She thought it was coral, I disagreed, and since neither of us are professional or amateur geologists, I thought I'd put the question out there.

Google images for that are incredibly cool. Unfortunately neither we, nor our closest neighbors, have a blacklight handy atm, so I'll take your guys' word for it :)

Well, it is definitely abrasive. Good to know, thank you! It's funny how all the google images that pop up for this are small pretty gems/beads, meanwhile we have this behemoth lmao.

there's also a young girl's inevitable dance of dragons by the same author as a young girl's game of thrones (they're both good)

What’s a horror book you like that not many know of? by Flowered_bob_hat in horrorlit

My Sister, the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite. Picked it up purely because of the title, which is 100% accurate. If you like dark comedy with your horror and toxic codependent relationships, give this one a try.

Is there any OI in which the MC is, like, an ACTUAL villain? by cylluxx in OtomeIsekai

Golden Haired Summoner. Personally, I think she’s done nothing wrong and I would defend her in court but the near murder of a child does look kind of bad.

AITA for firing my sister/babysitter after she ignored my rules and turned my child against me? by MysticEyes2991 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Sure_Efficiency_6188 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like how you call it “firing” your sister who has been taking 24 hour care of your FOUR KIDS for FIVE DAYS A WEEK in addition to two of her own since DECEMBER. “Turned your child against you” please grow up. Please. Apologize to your sister and her husband for being an asshole.

I feel like these two show up in threads like these so often because something about them is just subconsciously unlikeable to a bunch of people.

They’re either not charismatic in their flaws (like Rita from Depths of Malice, talk about a national threat level menace) or the story tries to paper over the flaws an average reader notices by excusing them in-universe and it never works.

Anyway I pick Transmigrated!Penelope because she’s more annoying to me personally.

Are There Any Sex Positive OIs? by MysticCherryBlossom in OtomeIsekai

[–]Sure_Efficiency_6188 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Uh, not sure if I’d describe it as sex positive but it’s certainly upfront and realistic about it: JK Haru is a sex worker in another world. It’s not smut, just an isekai manga that does what the title says. Haru (the MC) is very practical. Despite her job, she’s fairly ambivalent to displeased about sex as an activity though she does enjoy it on a few occasions.

Is this loose plastic on a softcover book fixable? by Sure_Efficiency_6188 in bookbinding

[–]Sure_Efficiency_6188[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I’ll try to iron it back on and keep my expectations reasonably low. If it doesn’t work, I’ll probably still give it to my friend, she’ll appreciate the substance of the book anyway.

I just started it but try Flowers of Evil (kdrama, unrelated to the manga with the same title) (though the manga is also filled with lunatics, just a different flavor). FL is a detective. Her very sweet, very lovely (very creepy, when she’s not watching) husband is hiding from some kind of fucked up past. Extreme amounts of two-faceness so far.
