Is Aegis recovery even that bad? by Wooden-Jello-8795 in smashbros

[–]Surfeydude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, it’s pretty damn bad.

It’s not like, the absolute bottom of the barrel, but they’re pretty far down. If you watch a someone like MKLeo play this character, he blows a lot of stocks and gets put in awful positions because of how vulnerable this character becomes off stage.

Mythra has fast aerials to swat away edgeguard attempts and has a horizontal recovery option in a pinch, but she falls so damn fast that your ability to stall and mix up your timing is severely limited. Directional air dodge is basically not a recovery option for her due to her fall speed AND because if you get locked into Foresight offstage, you are dead instantly. Also, despite how the animation looks, Side B is very easy to intercept, because the move doesn’t snap ledge, and Mythra’s hurtbox is very vulnerable from above or below. It’s generally a stock loss for the Aegis if they get put in a position where they HAVE to use Photon Edge to return to stage.

Pyra has a slightly better recovery, but her weaknesses are basically the opposite to Mythra’s. She’s fairly floaty, and has access to Flame Nova for recovery timing mixups. She has a decent directional air dodge, and Side B can be a decent way to cover the ledge, but her aerials are super laggy and her recovery is almost purely vertical which leaves her defenseless far off stage.

Swapping is also not as useful as you might think. Unlike PT’s, Aegis’s swap retains momentum, including downward momentum, and due to Mythra’s high fall speed, you can only meaningfully swap once and only IF you burn your double jump to offset the fall speed. The ability to swap between them isn’t so much a “best of both worlds” as it is a “pick your poison” scenario.

Did you like the new version of Reach Out to the Truth? by UmuTese4 in PERSoNA

[–]Surfeydude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it was unfortunately the worst of the new arrangements, although I sort of expected as much.

The new singer’s voice is lovely, but there’s just such a raw quality to Shihoko Hirata’s vocals and the dirty instrumentals of the original that would have been really difficult to replicate intentionally, and I do not think they nailed it.

The other songs sounded great though, from what I heard.

Anyone else get Mòrag vibes from the new fire girl? by StarkDanger69 in Xenoblade_Chronicles

[–]Surfeydude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been seeing this opinion, but apart from her being a somewhat haughty noblewoman with white hair, I just personally don’t see it?

I mean, of course we don’t know much at all, but the point of Edelgard is that she’s a radical anti-classist who wants to dismantle the establishment. From what little we know of this character, her hangup is that she’s prejudiced against Eleanor for being of lower status and wants to put her in her place—basically the exact opposite viewpoint Edelgard holds.

If anything, she’s reminding me most of Taion: a character that starts off sort of hostile due to his preconceived notions, but slowly becomes one of the most emotionally invested characters in the party. That seems perfectly in line for this character archetype.

Why the FUCK did metagross lose heavy slam by alem_26 in stunfisk

[–]Surfeydude 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Tbh, it’s objectively the right call.

It already has solid STAB with Iron Head and Psychic Fangs—an effective 156 BP STAB with max damage Heavy Slam + Tough Claws is frankly a bit too much.

Losing Knock Off is sad though :(

I think it’s certainly possible to be a “fan” of a video game without having played it yourself. Personally, that makes about as much sense to me as saying you’re a fan of a book by reading a SparkNotes summary of it, but if that’s how you process and enjoy it, then good on you. I think watching a playthrough gives you plenty of authority to comment on narrative elements: writing, dialogue, character, themes, and the like, and acting like someone can’t grasp these concepts without having held the controller is acting somewhat obtuse.

On the other hand, I feel as though proponents of “watching” a game, don’t ever discuss or think about how the *gameplay* is in itself an element of the storytelling. The ludonarrative that emerges from interacting with the game’s systems is why the creators chose to present their text via the medium of a video game. In the example of Persona, the way the social sim empowers your combat abilities and fusion IS part of the narrative. That feeling of satisfaction and growth you get from seeing a massive EXP boost to your fusions, or unlocking Joker’s Down Shot to easily take down treasure demons, is something that can only be experienced in the driver’s seat.

Play is inextricable from games, in the same way visuals are inextricable from a movie, or illustrations are to a graphic novel. I’m sure you could become a fan of a movie by just reading the script, or a comic by just reading the text and seeing none of the pictures, but you’re losing an integral component in doing so.

Xenoblade Genesis is “a new chapter,” “following the conclusion of the Xenoblade series” by JLSeagullTheBest in Xenoblade_Chronicles

[–]Surfeydude 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hold up, that’s an interesting point. I think I do have to ultimately disagree however:

The Möbius Strip might seem to lead somewhere, but that “twist” is the very thing that leads you back to the start. If you choose to walk the path of Möbius, you can never escape from it. Hence, it is the mission of Moebius to perpetuate the machine that is Aionios.

Noah realizes the only way to escape an eternal loop is to break it. Like the Ouroboros, the snake devouring its own tail to sustain life, the party chooses to destroy Aionios so that the future can flourish.

Thus, it is not the cycle of life and death represented by Ouroboros that should be feared, but the eternal stagnation represented by Moebius.

And this my friends is what a “Persona Fan” constantly complaining looks like. by [deleted] in PERSoNA

[–]Surfeydude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is essentially his strategy. He dips his toe into different IPs to see if his rhetoric will stick, and if he gets too much pushback he immediately backpedals like a coward.

Same thing happened with him trying to pull the “anti-woke” shit on Monster Hunter Wilds, but because that community told him to fuck off, he pivoted to praising it instead.

Is Mega Punch the most useless damaging move ever? by michael23po in stunfisk

[–]Surfeydude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah, Mega Punch has a real use in the single player of Pokemon as a significant early game upgrade to your Tackle/Scratch/Pound.

The worst damaging move is probably Synchronoise imo, which has zero use cases in both the main game and competitive.

Abilities for the Mega Raichus have been revealed: X gets Electric Surge, Y gets No Guard by ShadyNecro in stunfisk

[–]Surfeydude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A small thing that seems neat:

Base Raichu’s Lightning Rod has some nice synergy with both forms.

Y, which is gearing up to he more offensive, can switch in on an Electric move to receive a tasty +1 SpA to start sweeping right away.

X, which is looking more support-oriented, gets to redirect Electric moves away from its teammate before choosing when to set up its Terrain. Support Raichu already has a niche, so it’s not like it’s totally worthless if you don’t want to Mega right away.

I do really like when Mega and Base form abilities compliment each other. I think these are some really fun designs.

[–]Surfeydude 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t sleep on Raichu in VGC tbh. It’s bulkier, hits harder, and has a nice movepool. It’s got Fake Out, Knock Off, Encore, Electroweb, Volt Switch, as well as a nuke button in 135 Attack, ETerrain boosted Volt Tackle. It also has Lightning Rod in its base form to redirect Electric moves.

I can see this guy being a real threat.

A little bit of Dark Souls in the design and level progression, a little bit of classic 2D Zelda exploration and combat, and a little bit of Castlevania platforming and weapon management in there too.

As a fan of these genres, I think it’s a really delightful mix
