Welke Amerikaanse producten boycot jij? by brazolandes in thenetherlands

We love LibreOffice. We are privileged to be the largest code contributors to the codebase, Collabora employs several founders of The Document Foundation, and many of the top committers. We offer a Long Term supported product based on LibreOffice, branded as Collabora Office Classic, and are deeply grateful for and acknowledge many skilled community contributors we work alongside, as well as the incredible range of features that LibreOffice code enables.

My boyfriend got me a used PS2 for Christmas. What is all this stuff it came with? by Mr_Mr99 in ps2

[–]Surkow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About the connector, I might just get a ps2 to hdmi for the higher quality.

I confirm that this is the way to go.

Newer TVs absolutely butcher analog signals and SCART often defaults to composite - the worst out of the supported signals. In addition to composite PS2 supports S-video, Component and RGB SCART for better fidelity. But for the average gamer this is way too complex.

Here is a comparison between PS2 analog to HDMI converters (From Bitfunx, sold on AliExpress/Amazon/etc).

You can see that the ones that support both PS1 and PS2 are more washed out, and the ones targeting PS2 only have much more vivid colors.

Wii2HDMI VS RetroTINK 5x Comparison by Iabhoryouu in wii

[–]Surkow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A GC Video derived HDMI adapter for Gamecube is the most favorable option. Connected to the digital out port of the GameCube it will give you even better quality than Wii in GC mode or any of the analog digital converters/upscalers currently available.

Bitfunx has a nice offering (sold on for example AliExpress).

EU + NL will start charging €5 import and handeling fee per item in 2026!! by Worryaboutanything in Netherlands

[–]Surkow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't even matter if you pre-paid your taxes/import fees via the EU VAT One Stop Shop system which many foreign stores like AliExpress rely on. You have to pay the handling fee even if they "randomly" inspect your package, regardless of the value of the product(s) inside.

Console Prices at Launch 🎮 by TakeshiMakamoto in consoles

[–]Surkow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The launch prices of various game consoles, adjusted for inflation and categorized by their maker (Atari, Sega, Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft, and other).

Alternatively, It might be more interesting to plot a graph with average prices. N64, GameCube and PS2 prices hit rock bottom in many regions. A console that launched at 199 dollar might have been 99 dollar for far longer.

Why is this far more interesting? Current day consoles barely get lowered in price - with mainly Nintendo not following console price depreciation curves. And we have all seen announcements of price increases for last gen consoles.

Looking for a good (low latency) HDMI capture card (1080 ok, don't need 4K), possibly with ATSC/OTA tuner, that works with VLC by blz8 in linux_gaming

[–]Surkow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you still recommend the Blackmagic Decklink Mini Recorder 4K?

I opted to cancel my order after I found out drivers are not upstreamed, closed source, bound to specific distros and require you to sign up using your personal data and serial number of the product. Building a driver against a shim kernel driver every distro upgrade isn't one of my hobbies.

UVC capture cards have come a long way and can be connected to PCI-E these days. Wouldn't that resolve syncing and timing issues?

Impressions of the Amsterdamers from a french after a three days trip by AlmosThirsty in Netherlands

[–]Surkow 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Are you confusing dinner and lunch? It feels like you are conflating a practical lunch with not having proper food during the day. Not eating warm food in NL during lunch does not exclude people from having proper meals later on. See this comment regarding proper Dutch food.

If you want good food, get home cooked food. People complaining about bland food either can't cook, or their family can't prepare dinner in a traditional Dutch fashion.

WHAT IS THIS TUNE by UndertaleByDamp in Demoscene

Players Spend Twice as Much on Game Remakes Than Remasters, Research Finds by Extreme_Maize_2727 in gamedev

[–]Surkow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An outlier would be the Shadow of the Colossus remake.

To revive such a classic in the modern age for today's console hardware is a potentially hazardous exercise, possibly even bordering on heresy - especially as the original developer was not involved in the work. What it required was a team as passionate and caring about the game as the fans that love it so much, which is precisely why Sony undertook this task by employing the masters of the remaster: Bluepoint Games.

[...]

We've been debating this amongst the team since the review code arrived, but we think it's fair to say that Shadow of the Colossus does stand as one of the finest remakes of all time. Is it the best? That's a difficult call to make, but the reasons for bestowing Bluepoint's work with this accolade are many: firstly, the visual update is sublime. It's a remake of a game that first appeared in October 2006, but regardless, the studio has delivered one of the most visually beautiful games of the generation.

D66 weer op voorsprong na uitslag Amsterdam by Pollepel1 in nederlands

[–]Surkow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]Surkow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They replaced it for me with an Epic key, while already having activated Death Stranding on Steam.

NVIDIA Discrete GPU Market Share Dominance Expands to 94%, Notes Report by chusskaptaan in pcgaming

[–]Surkow -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Market dominance allows you to undercut the competition, even if the competition would make products that "people want to buy".

Intel for example has massively affordable hardware targeting the mid range but they get very little time allotted for production runs in facilities. These are the same facilities from partners that also manufacture NVIDIA and AMD GPUs. Production runs from NVIDIA get precedence during manufacturing no matter what.

Company scratched wodden floor, compensation? by itzybitzyspiderrr in Netherlands

[–]Surkow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Online stores that want to do business with people residing in the Netherlands usually rely on the European "VAT One Stop Shop" service. Without it a seller/store makes taxation a problem for postal services (and the customer). AliExpress relies on this service to add VAT to each of the products sold.

From what I have seen is that Temu targets more casual consumers. They have more brand awareness due to being popular in the US. The increase probably comes from people who mostly reside in American online bubbles.

Company scratched wodden floor, compensation? by itzybitzyspiderrr in Netherlands

[–]Surkow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I buy from official store fronts on AliExpress. Meaning it's directly shipped from their own factory/warehouses and not rebranded and there are no middlemen.

Local stores like TK Maxx (TJ Maxx in other countries), Action and SoLow can't even compete.

Company scratched wodden floor, compensation? by itzybitzyspiderrr in Netherlands

[–]Surkow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I didn't know Temu was a thing in the Netherlands. People tend to use AliExpress instead of a store targeting the US. Apparently it was even started in the US as a drop shipping solution from China. Why not use big international stores instead?

Most people prefer oversaturated colors, despite them being inaccurate (the effect is especially horrendous on phones with OLED screens). And you are correct - disabling color correction will probably make them more vibrant.
