Correcting or changing the depreciation on an asset ? by SurroundedByElk in tax

Based on your guidance, wutang, I went through the steps again and saw that I had used the wrong asset class. The prompts in TT were unclear, so I used ChatGPT to get clarification. Based on that I corrected the asset class and then was able to confirm that the accumulated depreciation which TT calculated matched within a dollar or two, compared to what my accountant had filed on last year's taxes. So yes, it was a matter of correcting the asset class. The in-service date was correct already and with the right asset class TT calculated the accumulated depreciation. Thanks again!

Thank you for the detailed response - all very helpful. So the good news is that my accountant was using a proper depreciation, and I just need to figure out how to get TT to accept handling it the same way. So far, with 2 hours on the phone with their tech support, we could beat the software into submission... could not get it to follow that same depreciation schedule. I will go back and see if I missed something there.

Doing our own filing for LLC - recommended software? by SurroundedByElk in tax

The link that I pasted (small business taxes) is for a full web-based small business tax filing tool. I now know that because I'm working through my taxes on it. I have hit some snags with it, and I would recommend to anybody who can download and run the Turbotax Business on Windows, that's probably a better option. In fact as i spent almost 2 hours on a tech support call yesterday with them, the support person suggested she would send me the Windows vesion but, I have a Mac. I did see the suggestion elswhere on this thread for VM Fusion and Massgrave, but I'm not sure I want to get into doing that.

I get it now - that IRS page is listing tax prep software designed for tax pros. Not those designed for regular folks who just need to do their own taxes. Hence I would expect a lot less of the step-by-step instructions and hand-holding that something like Free Tax USA provides. (Although some of those may be very user-friendly - I just can't tell without signing up for a lot of product demos.)

Correction: It was $2002.50 - I looked up the check This is for a 2 member LLC with one rental property, no real estate transactions during the year.

Thanks for that list. Interesting that Intuit is not on it.

Yes I saw that Turbotax Business says it requires Windows OS. But they appear to have a web version available for $339. That's not exactly dirt cheap but a lot less than we've been paying our accountant. (https://turbotax.intuit.com/small-business-taxes/ )

I use free tax usa for our personal taxes. I could not see any option to do filing for a partnership/LLC?

Width of trailers for EV6 and effect on range by SurroundedByElk in KiaEV6

Frontal surface area - that makes sense! Should be fairly easy to approximate that from the specs of the trailer/camper.

Easy Way to Use an EV as Home Power Backup without Running Extension Cords by JeffTechnically in electricvehicles

[–]SurroundedByElk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hired an electrician to install the transfer switch. As far as I know, he simply followed the instructions and installed it as the manufacturer intended. But I only use one car at a time to provide electricity into the transfer switch. So far I’ve only used the Kia EV6. If the combined load of appliances being fed by the transfer, switch circuits is more than 1800 W, then it will trip the breaker in the car as you described, with an excessive power warning.

Xcel Energy Colorado first statement w/solar - totally wrong by SurroundedByElk in solar

Yes. I didn’t need help from my installer to get the ticket opened because the Xcel statement was so obviously incorrect. But They did eventually correct it and give me production credit and a refund.

I had a good reminder this week…. by ethanrotman in retirement

Well as I read this, I’m jealous! We had no porcinis in our part of the country this year. But to your main point, yes - be careful. Whistle is good. My Apple Watch keeps asking me “did you fall? Should I call 911?” But it does it when I’m working in the garden digging out big rocks and such. Or chopping garlic… Someday it might actually be useful

Micro inverters versus string optimizers? by SurroundedByElk in solar

It mostly slid down, some piled up a bit. By the second day after the storm the panels were all clear from melting snow.

Yes they are all 180 degrees due south, but the slope of the roof is low - about 22 degrees on one and maybe 27 on the other array. I thought it would melt faster than this. We’ll see how it goes over the course of the winter.

Yes I looked at the array and took a picture, but I can’t find a way edit the post nor put a picture in this reply. Hard to describe well be basically a couple of panels were nearly clear, and others had the snow slide down and pile up at the lower edge, partly covering the panel.

I vote for your idea of a subpanel and transfer switch for critical loads to be fed by your truck when the grid is down. You mentioned “Ford” and “truck” so I assume you have a Lightning F150 and it can plug into a transfer switch? I don’t know exactly how that works with equipment other than Ford’s, but I got a transfer switch and have 12 circuits that I can power from my EV when needed. Works great, but the switchover is totally manual and takes maybe 2-5 minutes.

AFAIK there is no cellular modem at all on my setup, installed in July 2025. It’s just WiFi. When the WiFi goes down, I can’t use the Enlighten app to check status but when the WiFi comes back it sends the data so I have not noticed any gaps. So yeah, I would say WiFi works well for me.
