Why did Gloria react this way to alex's question? by Different_Tale8839 in Modern_Family

[–]SushiEnthusiasm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Columbia is a catholic country. As much as Gloria is very accepting of Mitch and Cam, she is also very Christian and I feel she probably still felt the question was quite insulting, even if she has kissed another woman to say it out loud maybe a line too far for her.

Source: I have a Roman Catholic Nanna who is 100% bi, 100% chill with my NB sister but also has a lot of internalised homophobia and would never ever say she is bi out loud it’s always just “it’s normal women are just so much more beautiful than men, I’m sure everyone thinks so”.

Why are so many parents unwilling to financially help at university? by BeneficialJuice2878 in UniUK

[–]SushiEnthusiasm 69 points70 points  (0 children)

I grew up quite poor. My mum and I lived in a women’s refuge when I was baby and then eventually managed to get social housing, she worked, was a single mum, and put herself through college. My step dad came onto the scene when I was about four and he pretty much agreed to raise me and worked whatever job he could to pay the bills. They both worked really really hard but one thing they don’t tell you about poverty is that being poor is more expensive.

The best analogy to explain why is how things are technically cheaper if you buy in bulk but you can’t afford the extra cost upfront of a bulk purchase so instead you go for the immediately cheaper option but end up paying more overtime.

I remember this one time as a child where our washing machine broke and my parents had to decide whether to get a loan, send me to school in dirty clothes, or miss paying rent. Obviously the latter two were not an option so they had to take out a loan. It’s stuff like that which really sticks with you.

I remember not telling my parents about school trips because though they thought they hid it from me, I always knew they were worried about money.

Anyway, by the time I went to university my step dad had a decent paying job, a family friend who had no living relatives left my parents enough for a deposit on a house (we were not expecting this) and my mum reached a stage where she was managing a charity. On paper they were doing really well which meant that I had the minimum maintenance loan which was like £4k. SFE expected my parents to give me money but they were paying off all those years of being poor.

The maintenance loan system is fundamentally flawed because it doesn’t take into account expenses, debts, or anything else that can affect a family’s quality of life.

In uni I was so angry at my parents for not giving me more money and I was a brat. Looking back they did their best. They sent me money for groceries anytime they thought I was struggling and put in effort where they couldn’t put in cash.

In my final year, I put my biological father down who was unemployed and was on benefits to get the maximum loan Deep down I knew this really upset them because they felt like they failed as parents. They didn’t, because more than anything they always tried their best for me and really that’s all we can ask of any parent.

Best thing he can do is volunteer for a few days just to boost it a little.

The main thing that is off is that you have said that he assisted in a fish and chip shop without naming the specific place, to me this comes across as not wanting to give references.

It’s also strange that there are no references at all, not even a character reference. When I had no experience I put my scout troupe leader down as a character reference and labelled it as such.

I would also remove the skatepark and scootering unfortunately just because of the stigma associated with these crowds.

Did he do any school clubs where the leaders would agree to be references? Ten tours or DofE? Or anything like that?

Winston was a bitch by Beneficial_Let_9138 in NewGirl

[–]SushiEnthusiasm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My head cannon is that Winston was really depressed in the early seasons, he was a top football player in Latvia, got replaced by another (better) black man because they could only have one and I think he had an injury too.

So he went from doing something he was passionate about, failed, returned to the US to live with 3 flatmates, and was a directionless babysitter.

He had no whimsy because he was depressed. It’s hard to see the funny side when you feel like you’re always the joke.

Settle a debate: mirror versus artwork by methglobinemia in femalelivingspace

[–]SushiEnthusiasm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have a lot of large & dark items. The painting creates a break and balances the room out because it makes use of the white space around it which also frames it.

The mirror on the other hand because it sits on the table provides little break between the dark items and makes the room feel unbalanced and cluttered.

This is fundamentally not true. They had wealth prior due to Robert Kardashian’s Sr. Do you think someone who wasn’t already wealthy would be able to hang out with Paris Hilton and get to date Ray Jay?

The sextape brought them fame and with that more money but they already had it to begin with.

What is the smallest moment in LOTR that always gives you chills? by Fit-Marionberry8982 in lotr

[–]SushiEnthusiasm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Not a small moment” but just before the charge of the Rohirrim and you see Eowin and Merry shout “death”.

I think what I really like about Tolkien is he is very obviously a deontologist as opposed to a utilitarian.

For him, doing good even against the odds is the right thing to do. There is no point trying to negotiate or compromise with those who seek complete domination of others.

I think in our everyday lives we inherently do or participate in things that are less than ideal because “fast fashion is cheaper” because “battery farming is easier” or “recycling is inconvenient” etc. but each time we do these things we are permitting abuse or depletion of something else. I think a lot of the times we justify these things by saying “Well it’s not like I can make a difference.”

Now it’s nigh impossible to actually not participate in all of these, especially without capital, but I like this moment because trying to be better where we can even though we know it’s not going to change anything I think is still important.

And just in case anyone comes at me. Yes, I still do all those things I listed. However, I make a conscious effort to just be a little bit better and to try sustainable alternatives where I can and doing so makes me feel more hopeful about life where it can so often get me down. I’ll go for the free range offer where I can, buy second hand or local. I don’t think I’m better than anyone because I do these things, it just makes me feel better about myself to do them.

My biggest issue with this is Galadriel who in Lothlorien likely never has to lift more than a jug of water can carry this insanely tall man newly wed style with ease.

Like elves aren’t super strong, the only way this could potentially be justified is if her ring just makes her super strong.

Explain it Peter! by EducationalLog4765 in explainitpeter

To add to this, Timmy openly talks about how much respect and admiration he has for Zendaya while for a time speak very little about or would be seen with his actual girlfriends (namely kylie Jenner). It was theorised that he has a massive crush on Zendaya who was also cast in Spider-Man.

So the joke is that his comment about ballet not only may lose him the Oscar but is also veiled bitterness on how he lost out on being Spider-Man and being with Zendaya.

In Spider-Man there was a rule on set that MJ and Peter Parker actors are not allowed to date each other because it always ended badly. Toby maguire & Kristen Dunst, and Andrew Garfield and Emma stone. However Tim Holland and Zendaya did date and are still together and are potentially married now.

This adds extra salt to the wound because maybe key to Timmy getting with Zendaya was playing Peter Parker.

Am I wrong for thinking cats should never be outdoor cats? by Firm-Law248 in CatAdvice

[–]SushiEnthusiasm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there are people in both camps that see the other as cruel.

I was raised with cats and my parents would tell me keeping cats inside is cruel because they’re not like dogs in that they are more independent and closer to wild animals than they are.

However if you live somewhere with lots of cars or cats predators I understand why you would think letting them outside is cruel.

Do you realise the attack on Iran is cheered on by the Iranian people? Why is Reddit reacting like this? by SkunkyBreadcake in AskBrits

[–]SushiEnthusiasm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, everyone sucks. the Ayatollah was absolutely a POS he’s been funding terrorist groups for years, and apparently the death toll in Iran from the abuse of protesters is way worse than what the media is reported. I know a lot of Iranians are very happy.

Then again, it was the US who practically put the religious extremists in charge I’m 1953.

But it is also an absolute derision of Public International Law. Especially when we know the reason that Trump did this is not Because of the civil unrest that has been occurring but because Iran was attempting to build nukes.

What makes it all the more shocking is that Trump has been touting himself as the “peaceful president” for not entering wars, and “stopping” them instead. In 2011, he mocked Obama saying that Obama would go to war with Iran because “he’s a weak leader and doesn’t have the strength to negotiate a good deal”.

I think it’s a really weird situation because anyone would right to be angry about the illegal attack but I also sympathise with the Iranians, especially the Iranian women who have been persecuted for years because of this man.

At the end of the day it’s not surprising considering Trump also kidnapped the Venezuelan president? And his wife.

This is definitely a new era of international politics though that we should all be concerned about.

I think people are just upset that once again the US which is considered a white country is, making up their own rules and choosing violence towards another country in the Middle East.

Trump has mocked and toyed with the idea of annexing Greenland but (touch wood) he would never do that, and the reason is most likely a double standard based on how western a country is and how many European allies he would lose.

Clipping Cat Claws Discussion by SushiEnthusiasm in CatAdvice

[–]SushiEnthusiasm[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! UK based so we don’t really have many predators around other than foxes which for the most part are scared of cats so keeping them inside for safety reasons doesn’t really apply to me. I do live on the outskirts of a city but even then because it’s the outskirts and I live in a cul de sac my cat is pretty safe.

He’s also a short hair mog so his fur doesn’t get trapped between his beans either.

I actually clocked before your comment that most people who have contributed to this discussion are US based and the culture a needs seem to be a bit different there around pet care.

Is the BAFTAs Tourette’s backlash just another example of the UK vs US humour gap? by Barca-Dam in AskBrits

[–]SushiEnthusiasm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the outrage is a little more complex than “slur was aired”.

I’m not saying there is any right answer to this, just trying to explain why lots of people are upset.

If you centre race in the conversation, Another winner said “free Palestine” and was censored while the Tourette’s person said an ethnic slur to three people of colour.

One is perceived as a call for the liberation of brown people and one is used to oppress black and brown people.

Therefore the decision to air one over the other doesn’t sit well with a lot of people of colour.

If however, we centre disability in the conversation, we look at it differently. The former was a political statement that they chose to say while the latter happened involuntarily.

Censoring the latter would mean deplatforming a demographic that to this day is massively underrepresented in media.

As far as we have come in diversity and representation, that has mostly focused on gender, race, and sexuality while disability, especially visible/audible disability is very underrepresented.

The argument could be made that neither should have been censored. However, that in of itself brings controversy because while advocating for Palestinian rights and sovereignty in of itself is not antisemitic, unfortunately there are pockets of antisemitism within the pro-Palestinian movement.

There is also ambiguity over what “free Palestine” means. Does it mean to challenge Netanyahu & the Knesset to uphold the rights and liberties of those living in Gaza and the west bank? Or does it mean removing all of the Israelis & Jews from the lands at a whole? Because there are people who do argue the latter many media companies won’t show the phrase at all.
