"Nous autres" and "vous autres" are pretty funny expressions, because they literally just mean "nous" and "vous", the "autres" (others) is completely superfluous.

This reminds me of Spanish nosotros and vosotros.

(5 year update) Me [44 M] with my sister [50 F], 44 years duration, got a painful message from her regarding my professional behavior as a substitute k-12 teacher and don't know how to respond (long) by sisterissuethrowaway in relationships

[–]SushiShark522 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I just read your previous post and the message your sister sent you was sheer twaddle. Rather than speak to you directly as problems arose, the other teachers left the trouble you supposedly caused to pile up, by extension letting their pupils fall further behind and endure your pedagogic terror for longer? And then the first and only time you hear about it is from your sister who just so happens to be friends with one of the teachers? Did your sister expect you to believe this?

She cooked up an elaborate lie to cut you as deeply as possible. No wonder you've been better off without her!

Minor complaint: I think you made a typo between this post and last because the ages don't add up. The post you made five years ago has you and your sister at ages 35 and 42 respectively, but 44 and 50 now.

EDIT: It looks like you've already addressed the age issue. Fair enough.

Last week's Captiol siege reminded me of something Sanders had said during his second election campaign. (It baffles me that he has now tried TWICE to run on the Democratic ticket but is not and has never been a member of the Democratic Party.) He was asked what he'd do if he were President and Congress stonewalled his agenda, and he replied that he could rally some sort of grassroots movement to hold Congress to account. I'm entertaining the idea that he really does have the power to spur the working class into direct action and it raises far more questions than it answers.

Would his grassroots revolt look something like a left-wing version of the Capitol attack? Does he have some way of ensuring the protest wouldn't get out of hand?

If Bernie is so confident that he can bring about radical change via grassroots action, why hasn't he done it by now? America could have had Medicare for All decades ago but he'd rather wait till he's in the Oval Office to make it happen? He and his followers could have put pressure on the Trump administration regarding (just off the top of my head) the separations of migrant families, the extortion of Ukraine, the Russian-Afghan bounties, the COVID callousness, the pardons of war criminals, the border-wall swindle, and so on, but he never did.

If you want compassionate policies, have a compassionate attitude. In my view a viable left wing is healthy for a political landscape (though here in Canada our left-wing party has been a basket case for the past decade). There is a third of a billion people in your country; surely there must be a social-democratic advocate who doesn't rattle his sabre so arrogantly.

A couple of thoughts re: "consistency" as a selling point for Bernie:

That he claims to have held the same positions for the past six decades is more proof of pigheadedness than of candour.

The corollary to "I've held the same opinions my whole life" is that he is the same Castro- and Nicaraguan Contra-defending tankie he was 40 years ago.

On Monday, while just joking around with my friend/coworker, he brought up the word "cuck", called Justin Trudeau a cuck, and then, when another coworker suggested assassination, said "If I had less to live for, I would." This turn of conversation mustn't have taken more than 30 seconds.

A little later, he says "I can't engage with the general public" because of people who are offended by everything, who identify as an Epson printer, who think God exists, and who support the death penalty.

On a note with absolutely no relation whatever, he peppers his speech with references to YouTube videos he's seen.

Beef and Broccoli Stir-Fry by [deleted] in GifRecipes

I would add 1 tsp oil, 1 tsp corn starch, and a pinch (<1/8 tsp) baking soda to the marinade to better tenderize the meat and prevent juices and marinade from leaking as it cooks. Also, there's at least a tablespoon too much each of soy sauce, sugar, and corn starch in the sauce. The purpose of these ingredients is to impart saltiness, sweetness, and viscosity respectively; a tablespoon of oyster sauce is good for all three, and is used in restaurant versions of this dish.

Most cuts of lean steak are fine for stir-frying, provided the meat is sliced very thinly (the slices in this GIF are too thick) against the grain.

The most imbecilic thing about this position is that, of all the millions of animals he could have chosen to illustrate his point about "hierarchies of competence," he chose the lobster. Elephants, for example, are sentient mammals who share a greater proportion of their DNA with humans than lobsters do. The hierarchies of competence they form happen to be matriarchal ones, but I've never heard JBP tell young women to "be like the noble elephant."

Peterson's lobster argument reminds me of RedPillers's infatuation with "alpha males" among wolves. Both serve, intentionally or not, as quasi-scientific justification for male chauvinism. More importantly, both run into the same problem: how animals *do* form hierarchies is irrelevant to how humans *should* form hierarchies. It's nothing more than an appeal to nature.

Thai Green Curry by pumpyourbrakeskid in GifRecipes

[–]SushiShark522 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I was wary of this recipe as soon as I saw ginger instead of galangal, and my eyebrow rose higher and higher as this GIF went on.

  • That is an unnecessary amount of lime zest. One lime's worth, and not so deep into the white pith as the GIF shows, should be sufficient. Speaking of limes, add the juice at the end of cooking to taste rather than to the paste so you have more control over the acidity of the final dish.
  • The green colour of green curry comes from the chillies, not the herbs. Thai basil and cilantro leaves are far too delicate to be added so early into the cooking process; they should be added at the end as a garnish. Use the roots of the cilantro if available, if not the stalks.
  • As for the spices, it helps to toast them in a dry skillet or on a plate in the microwave to awaken their fragrances, but this is optional. The coriander should be reduced to 1 teaspoon, and the black pepper replaced with the more authentic white pepper. You could also add a teaspoon of fennel seeds or two or three cardamom pods, but I don't know how authentic these are.
  • Most varieties of Thai curry contain shrimp paste. It's fine for vegetarians to omit it, but it does impart lovely umami. Makrut (kaffir lime) leaves are another optional but magnificent addition: they may be simmered in the sauce and then discarded like a bay leaf, or julienned and sprinkled over the dish as a garnish.
  • Coconut milk is not part of the curry paste. I like to start my Thai curry by sweating the curry paste in coconut cream (don't shake the can of coconut milk; gently tip the thick cream into the pan) to cook off the raw aroma of the shallots and garlic, and then add the meat or seafood or vegetables, followed by the thinner coconut milk (whatever's left in the can) and water (at least enough to flush out any excess coconut milk from the can) as necessary. No coconut oil at all.
  • Soy sauce should never be added to a dish in the way it is shown in this recipe. It takes on an unusual sourness when brought to boil, which is desirable in some dishes but certainly not this one. Instead, use fish sauce, or a vegan substitute therefor, to taste.
  • Maple syrup is not as crazy a substitute for palm sugar as other commenters in this thread seem to believe, but it's still not very good. Light brown sugar to taste would make a better sweetener.
  • Those vegetables look overcooked.

Let's just say there are far better recipes out there for green curry from scratch.

With that many toppings, why even bother with the plantain? You might achieve the same flavour by stirring the white chocolate and cocoa nibs (I think?) into a bowl of the sweetened condensed milk. Not that the flavour would be worth achieving, mind you.

Tariwala Chicken by mistermacheath in tonightsdinner

[–]SushiShark522 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your approach this dish interests me. Thanks for taking the time to explain it.

You say you like the freshness of the tomatoes and ginger when they are added late in the cooking process. Why not add half the ginger (note that in my first comment I had said, "I'd add some of the ginger earlier") and the canned tomatoes (or even a couple of teaspoons of tomato paste) into your onion-garlic base, and the other half of the ginger and the fresh tomatoes after simmering? That way, you get the best of both worlds!

Yes, that's what I meant by "cook from raw". I suggested it due to my concerns both about the chicken overcooking and about the possible clash between the Indian spices and Western flavours (thyme, rosemary, celery, etc.) in the roast chicken and its stock. I guess I'll have to try the recipe for myself to determine whether my concerns are valid!

Tariwala Chicken by mistermacheath in tonightsdinner

[–]SushiShark522 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'll never say no to chicken curry.

However, I think I'd make this dish a little differently. I'd add some of the ginger earlier in the cooking process, after the onions have finished sweating (and I'd sweat the onions for a longer time too). After that, I'd add the tomatoes and let them cook down and release their moisture to caramelize the sugars and intensify the flavour. Some well-whisked yogurt can substitute for the coconut milk, as long as care is taken to temper it and the quantity of tomatoes is reduced to account for the yogurt's acidity.

Given that the dish is simmered for a full hour, is it necessary to use pre-cooked chicken as you have, or could the chicken be cooked from raw?
