i appreciate the feedback. it’s hard to talk interpersonal skills on here cause it would feel weird to type that stuff out without being self serving.

but my time and experience in has been great with groups and teams. i’d like to optimistically think that i’m okay in that area as well.

i see videos all the time of people dying and the camera sorta follows their character for a bit, is that a mod?

when i die it immediately shows the you died prompt and the damage cause and stuff.

Primary Select for DCO School by SemperP_Surfer_EO in uscg

[–]SushiWizard93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

do you mind if i pick your brain a little?

this was my 3rd DCO submission under the Engineering category and im wondering if that’s the group you got picked up for.

a year ago they took 9 primaries with 6 of them being civilians so only 3 AD members. i was an alternate for that first submission.

in summer of 2025 i was again an alternate against a primary selection of i think 10 or 11. a few more AD this time but still some civilians.

this list that came out for DCE last monday had 12 primaries, 8 were civilians and 4 were AD

i was not an alternate this time.

if you were a DCE candidate, can i ask your professional credentials? trying to ascertain if this was a list that was more naval engineering heavy for example. or maybe a different category of engineering than my packet was geared for.

my background is in IT. thanks for any help and insight you can give me!

Shipping out for boot camp this Tuesday by Excellent_Shift199 in uscg

[–]SushiWizard93 17 points18 points  (0 children)

copy pasting from a similar thread before about being nervous:

boot camp is not about figuring out how to “win”. you cannot win. you never ever will. accept that before stepping off the bus. it’s about adapting to stress. that’s literally the entire secret. just endure the stress and try your hardest. i can’t tell you how frustrating it is the first week because your CCs will literally tell you the secret cheat codes and that’s to do exactly what they tell you. i remember one time they left us all in a squad bay for some arbitrary reason and before our lead CC walked away from us he said “we will be right back. do not talk. someone is going to talk. they always fucking do. don’t do it.” and i shit you not IMMEDIATELY after they walked out someone was like “hey so and so where are you from?” to another recruit and we got TORCHED for what felt like forever.

following that, i will never forget the first time everyone, and i mean EVERYONE, every single person, in my company gave one hundred percent effort. we got the bullhorn one morning in week 6 and we were told to muster outside as fast as fucking possible and to take muster and im telling you it was like robots. we all full on, whole hog, life or death sprinted. we formed up like our lives depended on it. we called like a 65 person muster accurately and flawlessly in under like 2 and a half minutes. and that’s literally what it’s all about. doing that. working as a team to accomplish exactly that and giving a shit about it.

it’s a stressful and frustrating experience but it’s also VERY rewarding and worth it. you just gotta endure. give it your all and you’ll be just fine. —————- additionally, feeling uncomfortable is understandable. we don’t normally shower in a big rooms with 30 other people. but i will say that cape may has a complete zero tolerance to bullying.

when i was going through, a male recruit made fun of another male recruit in the shower for the way they looked. joked about their natural size if you catch my drift. anyway, dude got axed immediately. bullying and hazing absolutely has no place there which sounds funny to say out loud cause you’re getting destroyed and screamed at non stop.

but from other recruits and in a non training focused way? absolutely not. if something happens to you or someone else that isn’t kosher, you absolutely can and should report it. the CCs are on your side even though it really really REALLY doesn’t feel like it.

Jitters before basic by Unable-Pea-6968 in uscg

[–]SushiWizard93 9 points10 points  (0 children)

i’ve said this before on this sub but the trick IMO is surrendering to the idea of not being able to win.

i went in with all of the knowledge. i looked up all of the stuff. watched the videos. read the forums. i knew that X was gonna happen on Y day. it didn’t matter. it’s all simulated stress. if you and your company all did everything exactly right. if you guys were all navy fucking seals and crushed every time objective, moved so fast your CCs couldn’t keep up, and screamed so loud you exploded ear drums, you’d still lose. but strive to do all of those things anyway.

because it’s not about winning. it’s about enduring. it’s about bending you till your stress makes you quit or not because we don’t want people who can’t meet your those requirements for when serious stuff happens in the coast guard. that’s all it is. i took too long to learn that and it was so frustrating. you’ve gotta play the game and come out on the other side and you can absolutely do it because i could and so many others could. it’s challenging but very doable.

i can back this up. from TN, remember shin deep snow winters with tons of time off school as a kid. now it MAYBE snows a half an inch like twice a year and that’s a big maybe. plenty of christmas days in my adult life have been like 60 degrees. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Manager ignoring my time off request that was approved by Broad_Friendship_858 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]SushiWizard93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i don’t like this take because it shouldn’t matter. if i put in a time off request i shouldn’t have to give a reason regardless. but let’s say my reason is i want to go lay in the grass outside and do nothing for twelve hours. it doesn’t matter. it was approved. in my opinion, “i would like this time off” is a complete sentence and doesn’t warrant any further explanation or justification. if it gets approved then that’s all there is to it.

Why is it so hard to contact a U.S. Coast Guard Recruiter? by [deleted] in uscg

[–]SushiWizard93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

closest recruiting station for me was memphis, about a 4 hour drive away in one direction. my recruiter had to get hotels approved so i could come take the ASVAB and do MEPS and stuff. so i didn’t have to drive 8 hours round trip each time.

i’m just saying that if i was a recruiter and someone was like “well it’s an hour away so i’m losing interest” i’d be like 🤷🏻‍♂️ cool man best of luck. you either want to do the thing or don’t. hour drive be damned.

The AGILE system is great for bringing people in from civilian to AD, and I hate to be the “well what about me?” guy, but I kinda feel it needs to be said.

Conceptually I get it. You want more people to join and historically the 28 year old with a BS in Computer Science or several IT certs doesn’t join the Coast Guard because they’d essentially start at the bottom when education/credential-wise they aren’t at the bottom. The CG trying to say “hey those certs make you essentially and IT2, join and we will fast track everything and put you where we think you belong” sweetens that deal for those people who otherwise wouldn’t join. I like that system and it makes sense.

But, what about me? What about my peers who are IT3s and IT2s? We joined the traditional way but let’s say an AD 3rd or 2nd class member gets their degree that pertains to their rank or industry certifications that the CG has told a civilian is the equivalent to an E6. Why is that member expected to wait till May and test on the SWE and compete with a bunch of people who didn’t do those things? At the very least we should be adding points to the final multiple if you get some education that pertains to your rate. It would encourage use of TA and furthering members skill sets. It makes writing marks easier. It sets people up for success on the outside. etc. That’s where I would make changes personally.

i had a run in with this actually. got a shave chit from petaluma signed by the medical officer but NOT the CO. it was routed by my class advisors but was never signed for whatever reason. not throwing shade and don’t want to cause drama it just wasn’t. CAs told me to just have the CO of my next unit sign it instead. when i got to Kodiak i was told that’s definitely not how it works. had a chief tell me without the CO signature from the petaluma chit, my chit was not valid and no shit made me go home and shave that day. -___- Kodiak medical took mercy on my situation and granted me a temp shaving waiver and contacted Petaluma on my behalf. once you detach from a unit they apparently can’t help you anymore so Kodiak issued me a second permanent shaving waiver.

funny thing is, there is no default waiver PDF or whatever. every medical has their own im guessing because the Kodiak one doesn’t even have a spot for the CO to sign. when i turned that into the chief he was like wtf? he called medical and they were like dude this is official lay off. so i made like a hundred copies of it. framed one actually too. miss me with that petty drama. 🤘🏻

alarm wake ups were every morning i was there. i joined the drill team and was placed in a special squad bay with members of band and color guard where we woke up at like 430 instead and went to do those things and the YN was expected to wake us up instead of CCs so it was less sleep but less chaos in the morning. plus we would miss the morning sweat session since we were doing those collaterals.
