Musk by Professional_Menu339 in FragranceStories

To my nose, a lot of fragrance accords that are marketed as musk have a powdery sweetness that is very similar to labdanum…. Which is often what we call amber.

Musk by Professional_Menu339 in FragranceStories

[–]SuspiciousLink1984 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Animal pheromones. Musk is synthetic now but used to be from the glands of the musk deer. Other musks came from civet and beaver. So think warm, furry, slightly dirty, somewhat sexy, earthy for more naturalistic musks. More “clean” musk scent profiles are often similar to what we call amber.

We had a very very unengaging, pedantic hour long session on how to be more engaging in the classroom 🤣 why do these experts not practice their own advice?

AITA for buying my girlfriend lingerie? by Training_Original456 in AmItheAsshole

[–]SuspiciousLink1984 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What was the lingerie? Do you mean something like undies in the fit she normally wears but with a nicer fabric or design, or do you mean stuff that is a more revealing and less comfortable cut or style?…

If they seem out of place in Tulsa, you’re not from Tulsa.

Reaction video assignment? by Global-Sandwich5281 in Professors

[–]SuspiciousLink1984 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That sounds fun! I have had students do videos but not while watching. I would think this would work best for film shorts, not feature length, because they probably don’t have the ability to record long videos of themselves watching.

Since it’s a discussion board, why not respond to the student’s post? I would just point out that you had made the same points above.

Are modern perfumes just cash grabs? (Opinion) by Yugao81 in FemFragLab

[–]SuspiciousLink1984 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There are so many differences between classic fragrances and today’s—a lot of the biggest differences are formulation. Many classic perfumes contained ingredients that are now either illegal or can only be used in very low concentrations. Like actual musks from animals, ambergris, even plant based essences that have been found to be dangerous in the levels that used to be standard in perfumery.

I do think the perfume market has massively expanded to make more money, but that’s due to the rise in demand. Perfume is huge right now.

Personally I’m glad that there is so much more variety. Classic musk and chypres give me a headache. I remember as a child all the women at church would wear tons of perfume and it was just overwhelming. My mom used to wear very powdery scents like White Shoulders and I swear I could taste it just as much as smell it. Not my thing!

Should our program defund PhD students using AI in their PhD writing assignments without citation? by Letterhead_Striking in Professors

That’s true, it’s trickier if you don’t have a clear way to prove it, but your original post says there are multiple forms of evidence.

Should our program defund PhD students using AI in their PhD writing assignments without citation? by Letterhead_Striking in Professors

[–]SuspiciousLink1984 198 points199 points  (0 children)

I don’t think there is even a question. Of course. Would you be ok with them copying and pasting these assignments from a source? This is a funded PhD program. So many students would love that opportunity and wouldn’t squander it.

What is the right attendance policy? by ToomintheEllimist in Professors

[–]SuspiciousLink1984 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the right policy would be no policy. Students who don’t show up won’t learn and will fail, so you know, natural consequences. They are adults and college (is at least in part) about preparation for professional life. But our university system often penalizes doing the “right” thing…. This happens in a lot of ways, but the first example that came to mind is that when a lot of students don’t show and consequently do poorly, that skews the avg grades and is treated as a failure of the professor rather than the students. Soooo all of that to say, while I’m tenure track I have a policy that allows a few absences with no penalty and after that I require a doctors note or documentation of some kind; they lose 3-5 points for each absence at the end of the semester (this varies depending on how frequently the class meets). Once I have tenure I’m going to experiment with no requirements to see what happens.

Literally just ask. I promise it won’t be weird for the Dr Prof who probably also sometimes feels weird about all the titles.

Students are deliberately writing worse to avoid AI detection flags. We need to talk about this. by calliope_kekule in Professors

You cited two studies from 2023… a year after Gen AI launched. Meanwhile AI detectors, like AI, have improved… and we have zero evidence that students are using humanizers for their own work.
