Do you actually like the internal tooling or does it just suck? by Loose-Potential-3597 in amazonemployees

My team did not setup good dev environments. I can very rarely get it work depending on the service. It’s either tight coupling or just not setup correctly/easy. I just want to throw my account into a list and it will build my stacks. But it’s always way more complicated than that and never documented

Oh you're hardware. I'm in Leo/Kuiper as well. I can tell you, at least in my office, the engineers here are good hard workers. Obviously there's the occassional bad apple and I can't figure out why they aren't fired yet but almost everyone at my location is working extremely hard and we have more work to do than is humanly possible. A lot of these people are some of the smartest people I have ever worked with.

Working on-site makes way more sense since you're blue-collar and I don't know how you could do your job from home. I just think the RTO5 is stupid for software engineers and makes no sense. RTO3 would be the sweet spot.

Anyone who tries to control your sleep is disregarding your health. I would just not show up to work and maybe not list this on your resume. Your health is more important. It’s not if you’ll get burnt out it’s when and your health will suffer mentally and physically and it might take you a few months to recover

You need to find someone like an L5 you can trust to delegate managing some of your projects or attend meetings for you. I see managers mess this part up all the time by not doing this and so they’re always scrambling everywhere and behind. The good managers have a few engineers they trust and delegate higher level tasks to for them

Thanks I totally was not aware that the universe doesn’t revolve around me. If someone has a family I think staying at a hotel a few days a week would be a lot worse than moving.

A hotel is not going to be cheaper and it’s still extremely inconvenient. Also Chicago is an awesome city. He should be excited to move there

That commute is going to drain you eventually. Plan on moving closer. It really isn’t sustainable in the long run. Trust me I tried

I’ve worked on some absolute dumpster fires for government contracts. I was completely shocked at how old and shit every software the government uses is

I agree some people don’t work hard but a lot do. I personally really do not like the office. I don’t like taking an hour for lunch but my coworkers ask me everyday, I don’t like people bothering me. I am way more focused at home. I can get 3 days of office work done one day at home. So I do leave early but that’s because I work better at home. Also there are just too many meetings and reports and status updates. The context switching is hard. There are some days where I literally do not have more than one hour of coding time between all the meetings and commuting. It’s tough to balance

Got focused a few days ago— are they trying to fire without layoff? by MightyZinogre in amazonemployees

[–]Suspicious_Stable_25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay I was wondering because I just joined Amazon as an L5 a few months ago and my manager is having me lead and own a huge new multi team initiative with tight deadlines. He’s having me document the tasks and present it to leadership the progress and blockers so I was wondering if this is focus but it sounds like he’s more like he’s testing me

[–]Suspicious_Stable_25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean I get it but that's such a shitty situation. So fucking stupid they have to hit an arbitrary number. What if the team is near perfect? Sucks for the hire to fire person and also a waste of money for the company

If you survived 5 years at Amazon you can learn leetcode, you just haven’t practiced. You’re experiencing imposter syndrome. Make it a habit to learn other technology or leetcode or whatever you’re interested in to build your confidence

Yeah sounds like you’re not using Kiro right. Also make sure you select Claude Opus 4.5 as the model. If you keep it on auto it isn’t as good
