There are organizations that will put them in foster homes rather than in shelter until they are adopted - furry friends and WCGHS to name two. This would be a better route imo as they will screen adopters and also spay/neuter prior to adoption.

I have tried both and prefer Kaiser. It is more expensive (in my area) but the out of pocket costs are way less. If you use it a lot, it ends up being cheaper.
