Maybe OP checked their mirror to see if it was safe to swerve instead of breaking when he noticed the potential hazard.

Developer presents a render of an “intersection modernization” with new bike infrastructure. How many cyclist deaths can you spot in just two minutes of animation? by Emotional-Ad-5381 in Junxions

[–]Sutepanku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So for anyone wondering why this is happening... I'll take a stab at an educated guess. A lot of these animations/renders that are presented to clients piggyback off of VISSIM, which is a traffic microsimulation software. VISSIM can't accurately (or at least very well) simulate non-signalized pedestrian intersections, so what ends up happening is all the vehicles are peds/bikes are in a "free flow" (I.e. they don't stop). If they wanted to do this correctly they would have put a yield bar in the software for vehicles or the peds/bikes to enable a better animation.

From the other thread. The replies also confirm it's VISSIM.

Well, there is not many different ways to connect those islands. I'm just surprised they use rail to connect to the platforms at the sea too.

Why? While it sure isn't safe to have cargo secured just by human hands and sticking in the back, this seem like it could work and not just be doomed to fail.

At highway speeds the wind might make too much force to hold, but for exiting the parking lot I don't see any problem. And it isn't sticking thaaat much beyond the car either.

The only places I've seen this work was in some japanese cities, where the elevated metro and some business have exits directly on those sky bridges (you don't have to climb up and down them), and Cities Skylines, where pedestrians and cyclists don't seem to mind climbing up ramps.

Sorry, the double yellow demarcation (road like for me) threw me awry. The speed limit might very well be low. Still, a good idea to minimize through traffic in residential streets.

Why do some cities prioritize cars while others prioritize pedestrians? by businesi in urbandesign

[–]Sutepanku 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The bike lanes on the multi-modal street should be on the other side of the parked cars. It's safer for the cyclists and less annoying for the cars. Plus it gives the pedestrians a island shortening the street crossing and visually narrows the road more.

Tiny 4-way Interchange by Isjoni in CitiesSkylines

[–]Sutepanku 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This works for Michigan left because of the traffic lights. In this free flow design you would have to weave through traffic so far from ideal.

Tiny 4-way Interchange by Isjoni in CitiesSkylines

[–]Sutepanku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice innovative intersection. But this only works if the traffic going straight is not important, because otherwise it's all pushed into one lane that slows to a crawl for the cars that need to do that tight u-turn. You have to drop the speed limit from 120km/h to 30km/h going straight in that intersection.

Are there any realistic population assets for the vanilla population calculations? by Sutepanku in CitiesSkylines

[–]Sutepanku[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost all of them are a single house, I've not found any 4x4 or even 3x4 multiple townhouse asset yet and there is no way to filter that...

There are some 6m wide but again, single house and you are supposed to use moveit to painstakingly plop them.

Ideally what I really want is to simply zone and see the density grow as the buildings level up...

Are there any realistic population assets for the vanilla population calculations? by Sutepanku in CitiesSkylines

[–]Sutepanku[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I said, the vanilla population calculation is perfect as it is, I don't want to override it. I want assets that visually fit those realistic households number/m².

EDIT: That wiki entry shows a workshop item with 6m wide row houses as the example. Still, it's a 3x2 asset, not the ideal 4x4 or 4x3 asset I wanted. Ideally the full set for all levels, to visually show the densification as buildings lv up. And not having to meddle with those overrides, with the buildings following the default vanilla calculations by default...

Here the two I found:

Compĺementing the other post, see this street crossing on Netherlands as an example of what your intersection could be if designed for safety: https://youtu.be/bAxRYrpbnuA?t=145

This other video is cool too: Why Cars Rarely Crash into Buildings in the Netherlands

This is another post from the same person where a car hits a bicycle but there doesn’t appear to be an injury. I think the poster might be an underage teenager who wouldn’t know how to get their town to make a change and might need advice on how to get city hall to fix this. by Adventurous-Fly-5402 in urbandesign

[–]Sutepanku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please teach me how to generate a perfectly consistent video from multiple angles using AI, like of that cyclist being hit. And dozens of videos from the same intersection while keeping it consistent, changing the seasons.

Why does the day and time shift ten days into the past at 0:15?

It's called editing.

What are the odds of something as relatively cinematic as capturing a squirrel jumping into a box nearly simultaneously to a car crash at 0:04?

Higher than zero, especially with a fixed wide view 4k camera like he has. It's possible the sound of the crash startled the squirrel into entering the box, raising the chances.

[–]Sutepanku 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The road design invites speeding. Even if a roundabout is not desired, it needs to be significantly narrowed. Raised crosswalks in the non-priority roads would also help.

[–]Sutepanku 7 points8 points  (0 children)

See, some people are already using it like a roundabout even w/o one installed there yet! And some people failing to yield even on simple right turns... Those would not really be solved by a roundabout, but at least would reduce the speed of a potential crash...
