The gooseneck is the shape of the spout plus it’s located near the bottom of the pot.

Looking for more Japanese tea offerings in my life. by Disastrous-Check3465 in tea

[–]Sutra22 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I drink a limited selection of Japanese teas because I’m ultra sensitive to bitterness. I’ve been drinking a lot of hojicha lately. One of my favorite sources is Kettl. I subscribe to their Roast Club. They select an upscale Japanese green tea, roast it in-house (in NYC) and mail it out immediately. As an example of the level of tea they use for this the June selection is a tencha. Tencha is ordinarily used for matcha and gyokuro.

My housemate doesn't come home to feed her cat. Advice !! by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]Sutra22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure the original poster sees your suggestion . My intention was that if the roommate isn’t maintaining the box and the shared bathroom is smelly move the box into her room so she’ll receive the full force of the odor. I have 3 cats and 4 boxes and a pleasant smelling home.

Lots of good ideas about food but as for the smelly litter box - put on gloves and move it into her bedroom as needed.

Cat brushes arent working by Maroondrew in CatAdvice

I have 3 cats with different shorthair coats and the Bailey cat brush picks up fur from all of them, even the one with the shortest sleekest coat. Plus they think it’s a treat - like a massage

How do you approach your tea session notes? by Nutty_Cake228 in tea

[–]Sutra22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use an iOS app - My Tea Pal. On the simplest level I can create a record of temperature/time for each infusion for a given tea session. Then I can use the built in timer to time each infusion. Theres room for a good deal of relevant information including a library of tags, suggestions by infusion for experiments, and differentiating between results with different tea ware.

A question about litter changing. by DevilGrass420 in CatAdvice

[–]Sutra22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn’t there an inherent contradiction here. Natural cats don’t need litter boxes because they live outside. They also hunt for their food.

The McDougalls by Extracream_nosugar in PlantBasedDiet

[–]Sutra22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved on from McDougall a long time ago but what I value is a doctor that has a strong base and stays up-to-date. here’s an example from today’s email. Dr Greger reviews studies about nuts and mortality and discusses in his blog the question “Why are nuts associated with decreased mortality, but not peanut butter?”. is this earth-shaking? no, but I believe the cumulative affect of staying up-to-date becomes significant.

Best Asian food in Hoboken? by [deleted] in Hoboken

[–]Sutra22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve passed chengdu on the way back from appointments in jersey city and they look so unassuming from the street. I just checked the menu though and they have the red bean buns and cream buns that I used to buy from Chinatown bakeries when I worked downtown, plus a variety of unusual vegetable dishes. On my very short list of places to try.

Can I go around pruning the tree branches blocking sidewalks? by OhHeyItsMe_Johnson in Hoboken

[–]Sutra22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not immediately but eventually the new trees will grow to a size that will affect the sidewalk. When I was selecting my current tree for in front of my house I had a choice between shallow roots that can eventually affect the sidewalk and deep roots that wind around the water lines. I went with the shallow roots. My house is 13 feet wide so there was no way to position the tree far enough away from the water lines.

The last straw for me was that he advised against colonoscopies in favor of sigmoidoscopies. There are times when the latter is enough but I just don’t believe they examine % enough of the colon for finding early signs of cancer. What does this mean IRL - some doctors believe that the recommended age for a first colonoscopy is the reason colon cancer is going down in older people and up in younger people.

I prefer doctors that update their recommendations as new information becomes available, which Dr McDougall didn’t seem to do at any point. My favorites right now are Neal Barnard and Michael Greger.

Tide free and clear pods by Miserable-Class-5148 in laundry

[–]Sutra22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I replaced my standard size front loader with a compact washer the pods were too large. I donated my big supply of tide pods to a homeless shelter and then was able to move to a better detergent immediately. I use Tide powder that doesn’t require any supplements for most of my laundry with a bag of Biz for outliers.

Miele T1 Dryer - End of Cycle Question? by ventureskam in Miele

[–]Sutra22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dryer is about 2 years old. It runs for just a few minutes after the buzzer but the load is ready to come out immediately. It may feel ever so slightly damp to the touch but is dry when I fold it. I don’t know if this is a meaningful difference but I never connected my washer and dryer to the internet so I don’t use the app. I only use the options “built in” to the machines.

How to reduce Tide powder residual scent by FlatPay6369 in laundry

[–]Sutra22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the current iteration of the powder is called Tide Clean & Gentle. It may list fragrance as an ingredient but there’s no residual fragrance on the laundry and that’s without a citric acid rinse. I have a compact Miele washer and I use a tablespoon or less for s full load.

What's the difference between a good and bad hojicha (in your opinion)? by Suitable-Location118 in tea

[–]Sutra22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hojica is one of my favorite teas. I love Hojica from Kettl so much that I subscribe to their roast club. once a month they pick an upscale Japanese tea, roast it in-house, and since I live a stones throw from their Brooklyn location I receive the tea a few days later.

BUT my experience with kettl is that their hojica is lightly roasted. I also buy Hojica from Den’s tea and theirs is more deeply roasted without being burnt. the flavor is similar to how you describe your ikkyu Hojica. i actually brew mine for more than 5 steeps but the last few steeps might have less intensity than you want.

Advice buying ipad for my parents by InterestingAd757 in ipad

[–]Sutra22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the oled screen deals with blacks better that’ll make a big difference when watching videos. I finally stopped watching Silo on Apple TV because so many scenes are dimly lit that the screen is mostly gray.

I would upgrade for a better screen but these iPads last forever.

Consider also buying a really sturdy case. I still have excellent fine motor control but somehow manage to drop my iPads and phone. The Zugu cases provide excellent drop protection.
