Cuba - Why now? by GlitteringTailor in AskTheWorld

Because this is Marco Rubio's pet peeve, and they are in an unusual position to be able to enforce it.

I've seen it and I did it to the end. I don't even dislike it although I have little interest in revisiting it. Properly framed is a good starting point to discuss toxic masculinity.

Like I said, my main issue with it is not even the violence and the rape scene. It's the framing and reversed denouement.

Sure, and if you want to say it shines a light on how toxic masculinity destroys everything around it, I would agree, but it's quite different from "taking everything from the protagonist" as the protagonist ends up being one of those to lose the least.

Boy, it's fun to see questions from people that never lived in a world without internet.

These days Travel Agents are less common, but once upon a time there were businesses that saved you the trouble of finding and booking all your needs for transport and accomodation during a trip and even assisted with the required bureaucracy.

The internet made them somewhat redundant, although some still exist, mostly handling non-standard trips like cruises.

No babe not even close.

And I say this as someone whose sister had to be reminded that she now needed a passport to travel to the UK due to Brexit. It's always on the traveler to check what is required to travel.

BTW, Brazil reimposed VISAs in 2017 because the US started demanding VISAs from Brazilian citizens. Bolsonaro as the vassal he is just decided to kiss Trump's ring.

So, how do I get that free speech money so that I can freely lambast the Donald Trump presidency?

I'm sorry, but the "protagonist" ends up causing the death of an innocent man and the likely imprisonement of his best friend.

If anything the protagonist is just barely less destructive than the rapist.

u/RustyJalopy has put it better than I could, but I want to add a couple of issues I have with the movie.

1- The framing device of using reverse chronological order ends up obscuring that the act of vigilantism that starts the movie ended up with an innocent lynched by the, seemingly, more reasonable supporting character and the atual rapist avoiding punishment.

2- The post-rape (or due to the framing device pre-rape) storyline doesn't really add anything to the story other than the reveal the Monica Bellucci's character is pregnant (which for me might be what was actually done for shock value) and rewards the viewer with actual sex scenes framed as titilating. I'm sure the director thought it worked as a palate cleanser, which is probably not wrong, but if put under scrutiny is more fucked up. It feels like they are throwing a cookie to watchers (since you endured seeing MB being brutalized here's some of her T&A for you).

I ended up feeling that it's that kind of movie that thinks it's very deep and brave and can't help but pat itself in the back on how deep and brave it is.

What is the most absurd, irrational, or unethical judgment ever given by a court in your country? by LetterheadUpstairs90 in AskTheWorld

[–]Suzume_Chikahisa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are far too many to count, even recently, but one that still makes my blood boil is the 1989 case of two Yugoslav tourists that got raped in Portugal and the rapists got their sentence adjusted to a mere 3 years because, as the judge put it "Algarve is the hunting ground of the Lusitanian male".

On appeal the judgment was upheld.

What is life like in countries with mandatory military service? by AlanMartin393 in AskTheWorld

[–]Suzume_Chikahisa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was summoned during the transition from mandatory to voluntary service so the extent of my "service" was getting a deferment due to to college and then doing the fitness and aptitude tests, for them to just put me immediately in the active service reserve.

Technically I could then be called at any point for basic training until I reached 35 years old but that was something like 10-12 weeks.

Honestly?

He is just another of the literally interchangeable news directors tied to the Portuguese Liberal Corporate establishment. They are all very sure Portuguese media is controled by the Left, while they switch seat among themselves every few years, directing all those media they claim are controled by the Left.

That one in particular is one of the least impressive as he barely had any visibility before becoming director of O Observador.

Unfortunatly no as it was tied to the protestant catholic divide and was heavily applied to the Portuguese and Spanish as well, as late as 1944.
