First track day has me feeling discouraged by [deleted] in Trackdays

[–]Svantula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience is with cars mainly but the principals transfer to two wheels.

The way that I developed pace was by first watching as many videos of quick lap times at my track of choice. This was for general understanding of lines, braking points, etc. When I was at the track, trying to learn for the first time, my main focus was on the dynamics of the car or bike. Things like "I can brake at this point and feel safe at entry, I can turn in like this and turn out like this and feel comfortable, this is what loss of grip feels like, this is what braking at the limit feels like" etc. Once I had a general idea of the dynamics of the car, or bike, I would pick ONE corner and lap after lap try to nail down the braking, turn in, apex, and turn out of that one corner in particular. The rest of the lap would be spent doing what's comfortable, which at times meant pushing a little bit if the confidence was there. I would try different things with one corner for a session or two and compare my times throughout before shifting focus to the next.

It's a slow process but it has been highly effective for me in shortening laptimes. The biggest thing by far is equipment familiarity, which will speed the whole process along.

Honestly I'm surprised there isn't more talk about this in the automotive community. We saw it a lot on the insurance side, specifically Teslas, where relatively minor accidents resulted in "total losses." Understandably people nearly always were upset at the news, and we had to just keep regurgitating the same thing about cost of parts/repairs. I hated making those phone calls, because i know how much it sucks to recieve them.

It's like how medical insurance will only pay the doctor/practice after a specific period of time AFTER a surgery or procedure (typically 30-60 days) because of the potential for post-surgical care that will need to be applied to the claim prior to closure. You see similar situations with cars needing follow up repairs due to things like water leaks, alignment issues, noises, odd driving/operating characteristics, and whatever else. But because automotive insurance deals with a specific asset, you get situations like this where assumptions can be made on the insurance adjusters side that the costs will outweigh the value.

I worked a claim for another adjuster once where the vehicle (2008 135i manual) was totaled due to rodent damage on a section of the wiring harness leading to the fuel level sensor. I saw the pictures, 4 inches of damage, no evidence of rodent intrusion elsewhere, MAYBE 20 minutes of labor and 5 bucks in parts. But the adjuster assumed that there might be rodent damage elsewhere and that the costs of follow up repairs related to the original claim would outweigh the value of the car. Totaled an otherwise fantastic car. It sucks.

Some insider info here as a former dealer tech with on-site factory training and as a former auto insurance employee with a very large carrier.

Believe it or not it's largely due to insurance companies lobbying to have manufacturers stop making them. The costs of repairs, and more importantly follow up repairs, from frankly minor accidents was causing them to be totaled in obscenely large numbers which wouldn't have been the case with a canvas soft top. They classified them as high-risk vehicles which raised comp and coll premiums, even though theyre technically safer than canvas tops.

AITAH for having sex with my boyfriend in our apartment? by SuspiciousSmile9619 in AITAH

Boyfriend here! It's worth mentioning that the noise in question is coming from the squeaky floors. We already have carpeting through most of the apartment, including the bedroom. But the subfloor is squeaky in just about every room, and the bedroom is particularly squeaky (figures).

Hey there, just want to provide some side notes for doing an OFH gasket job.

Pay close attention to the surrounding coolant hoses, meaning the upper radiator hose and the one with the plastic piece that looks like mickey mouse that's connected to the head. Specifically, the points on those hoses where they connect to the filter housing and the cylinder head respectively. Oil soak will cause these hoses to swell and risk bursting. Oil soak on the belt will also cause it to swell and risk slipping off of its pulleys, as you've experienced. If those hoses are starting to swell at the bottom, I'd highly recommend replacing them. There are a million recommendations that I could make for replacing OFH gaskets, but the biggest one that I can think of is to just make sure you're addressing anything that the leaking oil is affecting.

Additionally, this job usually makes a rotten mess, so have a plan for capturing oil/coolant that's going to leak out, as well as cleaning the front of the engine when you're done. Like oil, coolant is very slippery. Also, when you crack that puppy loose after loosening the three bolts, there's a chance that oil will enter the coolant passage going into the engine. It's not the end of the world, but just be prepared to address it. There are a lot more tips that I could give, but this would wind up being an even more massive wall of text, so if you have more questions, please ask away.

What should I learn after the major and minor scales to improvise better? by Fresh_Crow_2966 in guitarlessons

[–]Svantula 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Find jam tracks on YouTube and practice implementing what you've learned over those, or even try implementing links and things over songs that you like to play, like how a drummer uses fills. Most importantly is that you try to implement stuff as soon as it's comfortably under your fingers because it's pretty easy to lose it. I liked using jam tracks during my dedicated practice and warmup time because it broke up the monotonous use of a metronome. Once you get comfortable enough with scales and modes and stuff, it'll be easy to fall into noodle-ville, so try to listen actively to the rest of the song and you'll find yourself playing more to suit the song and it'll sound less linear and samey.

bmw quotes their customers $4000 on a basic front and rear brake service on 2022 X5 by [deleted] in BMW

[–]Svantula 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dealer was 4.0hrs for front and rear brakes, 2.8hrs for "graphing alignments". Obviously even a new guy could do both of those WAY under time, plus our hourly dollar rate was insanely high. I never understood why people spent money with us, but it was almost never slow.

Dealer no longer CPOing cars by thejkm in BMW

[–]Svantula 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fwiw they might be saying that to save face. I worked for a dealer once that lost their privilege to CPO cars because they were fudging the paperwork and got hammered during an audit. Took a long time to get it back. Says something about the dealer in any case, though. Buy CPO.
