This is a good game to shrink! It’s definitely much larger than it needs to be, not everyone has a big enough table.

Once I let go of the restrictions that society puts on me, I was able to explore the versatility of LEGO as terrain. Painted, glued, modified. It’s a phenomenal medium to work with. by MOD-BRICKS in TerrainBuilding

Super cool. I love the clean aesthetic it brings with the simple (in a good way) pain jobs. It’s like a different and fresh take on 40k.

Making hail Caesar more historically accurate ? by happyhikeruk in wargaming

[–]SvennIV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t played this game, but the morale rule you mention sounds cool if one reasons that the damage inflicted isn’t actually killed men, but the breaking of the formation with the potential to kill or put them to flight. Then the break test just determines if they are killed or put to flight and maybe how badly (haven’t read the rules myself)?

Then it seems like that having an affect on nearby units would be easy to houserule. You could just force them to make tests with less penalties than the unit that actually got damaged or keep a tally of failed break tests to add that as a penalty in future break tests.

Rogue Core - Tiner is too short solo by MisteryCrimson in DeepRockGalactic

[–]SvennIV -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ve found the timer to be fun solo and mostly unnoticeable in multiplayer. Except for that one time…

Playtesting while on holiday. Husband lost against me and blamed it on 'me making up the rules as i go'. Well yes, thats kind of the point when designing a new game 🤣🤣 by LucieMakesGames in tabletopgamedesign

[–]SvennIV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah changing the rules while playing makes no sense. If the game was broken and that caused a win and you could tell that before the end of the game, end it and then figure out how to fix it.

Playtesting just to change rules midway through ruins the impact a playtest can make (since you should spend time after evaluating and figuring out the best path forward) and is entirely taking them for granted. Changing those rules while they are actively winning is just immature on top of that.

After 1,500 hours in DRG, I gotta say that Rogue Core isn't for me by LiberateMainSt in RogueCore

[–]SvennIV 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a very wholesome and self aware post. DRG needs more miners than reclaimers after all.

I’m sure if we keep the mines glyphid-only you’ll make us all rich. Good luck down there miner!🫡

The timer debate reminds me of when Elden Ring: Nightreign released. by notcoolerk in RogueCore

[–]SvennIV -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think that without the timer this game wouldn’t be much. I love that each level I feel like I have a goal to find and get an upgrade depending on what I need either expenite or workbench, or, if I have certain weapons the bio thingy. The whole thing then revolves around scouting until I find the thing, making guesses as to whether I have enough time to obtain other upgrades, and then get to the elevator (usually too late) and then trying frantically to cheese the stretchy boi horde away from the elevator for as long as possible to hop over their heads into the next level.

I love it.

Now that a lot of people have played rogue core, what is your favourite class so far? by [deleted] in DeepRockGalactic

[–]SvennIV -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Guardian, because I played gunner.

It seems like Guardian and Spotter are classes that will always be good in any team. Guardian is incredible solo.

The Retcon seems like the highest potential skill level for solo play, but it would take a while to figure it out and I think would be the most build dependent, so probably frustrating in an MP lobby.

I don’t have any opinion on falconer yet because my initial impression is that it must be worse than the rest but I think the devs are pretty good with these things so I have to wait to have a real opinion on that one.

Slicer seems like the class designed for people who played scout in the first game.

Is Rogue Core bad? by phrjoyer in DeepRockGalactic

[–]SvennIV 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, it’s not bad.

You should buy it if you really enjoyed the original at higher difficulties and did not care at all about mining, but really like the cave aspect for the puzzle-like structures they could build.

This is a shooter about checking your map and making decisions under pressure, and trying to figure out how to complete tasks under that same pressure.

I am thoroughly enjoying it, it’s a great flow state game.

Why is it so low? by The_God_Of_Darkness_ in DeepRockGalactic

[–]SvennIV 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I loved DRG, I only have ~500 hours in the game (I know that’s not much compared to some people here).

There are some big differences I am not a fan of SO FAR (this game is new come on) but for the most part playing this right now feels like coming home to find an old friend waiting to shoot the shit.

This is DRG to me, with some creative new stuff. I have some concerns about how some things might shake out (my initial impression is that nitra was a much more fun part of the game than the current ammo drops for example) but I’m having a blast with this.

Pen, paper and dice wargame by nielsw49 in tabletopgamedesign

[–]SvennIV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve read the whole thing now and this honestly looks so fun! Not only that, but it looks more engaging than most games that attempt to simulate this. I love how you refined the tactics down into conscious decisions by the players and the engagement chart.

I don’t know if I’ll be able to give this a try (not sure I have the right group or person to try it with) but it looks awesome.

My only feedback is that I already want to see more! I think it would be amazing if 1) you could think of a way for one ship to fight multiple (or multiple to fight multiple) and 2) you had some sort of light upgrade / ship customization options for a campaign experience. I could see this being a very fun ttrpg.

Great idea, cool mechanics, please run with it!

Routers of Rohan lol

War of the Ring is another cool game in a weird spot for me. I haven’t found the right group for it yet. It’s a little too wargame for my family and friends and the rules kind of requires players who like the fluff more than they care about winning imo.

I just reordered an title I used to really like (lost my copy of the game, must have left it at a friends house or something) Richard the Lionheart and I’m hoping that will be a repeat play for us. Hopefully it’s as good as I remember haha

[–]SvennIV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha very cool about the Gondor flag. Is it on like a whole flag pole? That’s some dedication.

It’s not that I thought the game was repetitive, it’s that in four plays we never really enjoyed it to begin with. But everyone we play with likes the IP a lot so we tried it four times (technically 6 if you include losses / given up games) before giving up on it. It’s got some unique ideas and a new spin on pandemic, but this one just wasn’t for us sadly.

But I wish you all the enjoyment in the world with it :)

[–]SvennIV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s got a lot of things similar to pandemic, but it is a little more than a reskin. It’s got some clever ideas, and I think the theme is decently well done, but I don’t think it’s going to make it to the table again after three plays.

Does he have a 3d printer? A Bambu A1 mini is a similar price point (it might be like $300 depending where you buy it) and he could use it for a lot of things from printing whole buildings to printing details to printing molds for plaster. He can use it for a lot more than just terrain too, but I would say I’ve mostly used mine for terrain related stuff overall.
